  • In terms of hair breakage, what's better: Regular wash n go's, or twist outs? In this episode of Ask Dickey, our favorite Texture Guru talks about the differences between wash n wears and protective styles, and he reviews the benefits for each when it comes to kinky and curly hair (3A-4C textures). How often should you wash n go? How do you prepare your natural hair for a protective style like twist outs or braids? What are the best leave in conditioners healthy, hydrated hair?
    While peppering in history of the Natural Hair Movement with his tried and true hairstylist advice, Dickey is sure to help you learn about your unique texture and give you the confidence to rock any hair style.

    This was the most helpful information anyone has shared about type 4 hair. I don't do wash and go's at all because I don't like to do my hair frequently. You just made me aware that I should not be doing twistouts on soaking wet hair. This is about to change my hair game. No one has ever put it quite like that before. I'm about to start doing the LOC method first; then blowdry with a comb attachment; then style. I watched a tutorial recently where the young lady did the same steps with ease and great success, but I had no idea this should be the norm for my hair type.Thank you Dickey!

    4b - low porosity here. Everyone's hair is different. Learn your hair and do what works for it. I would never twist my hair dry for Twist outs. I apply a leave in with running warm water and then apply a moisturizing styler before twisting (no oil). Let my hair sit in the twist the entire day and then twist out. My hair never dries out or excessively tangles. You have to find what works for you.

    • @gigi1161998

      Same. I'm a 4 and I usually do twist outs on wet hair. The curls stay longer and if I maintain it properly it stays moisturized. My blow dried twisters don't hold.

      While i dont agree in terms of moisture retention, I kind of see what he is saying about the twist out not coming out as great or having more frizz/shrinkage if done wet hair for type 4s, esp 4c. Thats why i do mine on damp hair after i have streched it with twists or braids, never with heat though. Personally, i dont see how using heat everytime you do a twistout regardles of leave in or heat protectant used isnt damaging over time/more drying for the hair...

  • @debrabankscuadro311
    @debrabankscuadro311 6 лет назад +32

    Good information. The longer my hair got, the more I saw that WNGs tangled and damaged my hair. A twist-out/braid-out is my go to style now--but I do WITHOUT heat. I will wash, deep condish, rinse, add oil and twist in large chunks; I air-dry until mostly dry. Doing it this way keeps it detangled and helps it dry faster because there is no product coating my hair yet. Once mostly dry/slightly damp, I add my twisting lotion and then braid. Braiding stretches the hair, and I still get great definition. I do have to dampen and rebraid with more lotion/oil every-other night (my hair drinks in moisture!), but it stays fluffy, soft, and detangled.

    This is the best advice I've seen on RUclips. He's on point when he discusses setting twist outs on dry hair. I haven't done a twist on wet hair in years. I always style on stretch out dry hair. Wash n go styles are not feasible for me due to my density...unless I use a blow dryer my hair would always be damp. Great video!

    hmmmm. Everyone's hair is different even two people that both have 4c hair. I will say Dickey's tips on how to get a successful wash and go on 4c hair is great. It works. However, not every 4c will need to do it every day and depending on products used your hair won't necessarily be dry just because you don't do it every day. It's all about how you maintain it and again what products you use. If you use a good moisturizer before your styler then that helps maintain moisture. If your hair does get dry that second day you can mist (not soak) with a moisturizing leave in. I think this is the key to getting a long-lasting wash and go and keeping the moisture for more than a day or two. If you mist it will not disturb your curls. I will agree that the first-day wash and go typically looks best on 4c hair maybe that is part of why he is suggesting you do it every day, but the following days look good as well you just lose a bit of volume and length. Different strokes for different folks. No one rule fits all even with the same hair type. Regarding twist outs, I've done on wet hair and dry hair. Wet hair has never left me dry and frizzy, it's actually the most defined but I don't prefer it because it seems messier (I hate the feel of wet hair and product), takes longer, tangles more and it's more shrinkage. however, it was always moisturized and defined. I do them on dry hair now, but stretched, I do not use the blow dryer to infuse my products. that's an extra step not needed for me and I have dry hair. If you have a regimen that works please don't start changing it up. By all means, if you are still searching maybe some of Dickey's tips will work, but all of this seems like a lot of work and 4c hair does not have to be a lot of work to be healthy and thrive. That's all.

    • @alsaxon
      @alsaxon 5 лет назад +1

      I like Dickey so don't come for me. I just think some of these tips are presented as "rules." As if you don't do it this way your hair will be a dry breaking mess, not true. I notice that a lot of stylists have their rules, but they only see your hair once a month, once a quarter etc. You know your hair best, you deal with it EVERYDAY. I've had stylists give me advice that I dare not take because I knew it was wrong for my hair.

    My niece is bi-racial 3A or 3C washes her hair daily and wears it in a bun, her hair is very long. I never thought that would work on 4C dry hair, I'd always been told washing too much would dry it out but that really doesn't make since. I can't believe I didn't figure this out sooner and I do remember Jeri Curls.

    I remember the 70’s, I was natural then. I recall washing my type 4 hair about every other day. I never did a jeri curl because I could not stand the drippy, greasy mess. Now that I am natural again I mostly do twist outs. Because of my kinky curly hair I did not think I could do a wash & go. However I watched one of your videos and decided to see what my hair would do. I generally would twist my hair in sections while I was in the shower and never paid attention that my hair was so curly until I decided to do a wash & go. I have a loose curl and tight curl mixture. My hair stayed moist & hydrated for about 3 days. On the 4th day it was extremely dry. So I guess for me if I am to continue a wash & go, I guess I could get away with shampooing my hair at least twice a week.

I don’t think all 4s need to do everything the same way. My hair don’t tangle styling wet. I don’t leave my styles in for a whole week either. After about 3 to 4 days I have to wash my hair. He's right. I am learning THEE HARD way. I'm 4A/4B. Been doing WNGs for 1.5-2 years. I have got to - MUST rehydrate at least the last 5 inches of my hair DAILY or EVERY OTHER DAY (meaning spritz with water, add cream, then oil, then a hydrating gel). Otherwise - I get DRY, split ends, with HUNDREDS of single strand KNOTS. Which then have to be cut off : ( I've been losing inches this year - and my straight hair is between mid-back to waist length. NO MORE!

    This is great advice for a wash and go but the routine isn't realistic for a lot of people. My hair has gotten pretty long and it's fine. I get a much better result doing a light blowout and then doing bantu knots and braidouts. Dealing with wet hair, long drying time, and using a ton of product is not fun for me. I'll do a wash and go every now and then. But wet styling doesn't fit my lifestyle anymore.

I put oil in a pump spray bottle and spray when needed and I olapex twice a month but I use number 6 frequently. I never use heat or straightened my hair. When im tired of the wash and go I put my hair in twists from a week old wash and go and use the olapex 6. I sleep with shower cap on every night and I take the twists out in 7 days and its so beautiful. Basically I wear my hair out for two weeks and twist for two weeks thats my monthly routine. It has trained my curls.

    How do a person dry their 4 type wash n go in the winter time in very cold area? Wouldn't blow drying cause heat damage if you had to blow dry everyday. I have 4 hair type and I don't have dried out hair. I cleanse my hair every week and it stay moisturized. When/if it does get dry, I will cleanse again (in Summer time) but will use a mixture of aloe Vera juice and conditioner and mist my hair then seal in winter. I would cleanse more but my thick 4 hair would not dry if done at night and I would never go out with wet hair in this cold winter weather.
    Thank you Dickey for your response and help. Your series has really help me achieve a beautiful wash n go on my 4 type hair.

    Thanks for the info. Curiously, what can be used i n the hair for a dry twist/twist out without causing the hair to revert? It’s nearly impossible to find products that don’t have water as the first ingredient.

    Rant: Thank God you realize black hair and it's different types have individual needs. Their is a curl stylist on instagram who's really talented but he says that anything other than his signature wash and go styles are damaging to curls - including protectivr styles and excessive use of oils. Look, I know y'all stylists are trained professionals but I know my hair. He is white, and I do think that plays a part in him not fully grasping why (but he does all types of hair, and does it well). I just found it detached from reality. My hair thrives in oil and protective styles. Then when I asked him why he felt this way he treated me like I was being rude. How are you above question on a social media platform? Especially as a hair educator? End rant.
    Loved the video. Haven't watched in a while and I love the content you provide.

      My hair does well with protective styles too, especially in the winter. I talked about this and showed some protective styles in some of my videos.

    I have type 4 hair. Idk what letter lol (I think it’s mostly 4b with 4c on the sides and towards the back and 4a at the top 🤷🏽‍♀️). My wash and go’s last without me having to retouch it for about 3 days. I usually have to redo the front but I can usually last for about 4 days without having to redo my whole head before having to wash and my hair is moisturized up to day 3 or 4. I’ve actually noticed that my hair stays moisturized a lot longer with wng’s more than any other style which is why I like them so much. I never thought I could do them with my texture until I did another big chop around October 2021 to cut off all my damage hair from combing out my dreads. Now my hair is very curly and stays moisturized for a manageable amount of time and it’s literally the only style I do on my hair other than braids as a protective style 😊

    Are you in the salon every day or certain days? I'd love to come by to get my hair done :) I had a devacut a little over a week ago so I wouldn't come for a trim, just getting it washed and styled

    I seriously hadn’t thought of drying my hair first and twisting after. I guess I was worried about heat damage since I do wash my hair every week.

      Vamica Bony I wash my hsir every week as well and blow dry each time..done it for almost a year now and no heat damage. I think the fear of heat damage is almost damaging in the natural hair community lol. I use low heat and make sure my hair is moisturized first. Never had a problem

      I think heat damage mostly comes from using flat irons! At least that was my experience

      @TheResetWithEmi 6 лет назад +2

      Curlytash J I agree. I'm not sure when the idea that using a blow dryer properly will cause heat damage started gaining ground

    • @Artemis583
      @Artemis583 6 лет назад +10

      The thing is, heat damage is simply a result of applying excessive heat to hair that is dry and dehydrated. If you solve the dryness and dehydration first, then heat damage is less a part of the equation. This is why Dickey recommends frequent wash and go styling as the foundation/basic hair care routine. If you are consistently and constantly providing moisture and conditioning to your hair (which is naturally dry to begin with) then dryness is less of an issue and you can style it however you want. But you need to build a baseline of hydration FIRST. Otherwise any style you do, heat or no heat, is going to be damaging.

    Hi Anthony 🖐🏾😁
    When you use the term damaging in this video relating to 4c hair for those not doing a daily wash and go. Does the wash and go damage have the same affect as heat damage???? Can the w&g damage be reversed??? Just curious 🤷🏽‍♀️

    My hair is in the 4s and I can wet it amd twist it for 5mins wet..unravel it.amd I have well defined ringlets...if my hair dries without any product in it...it looks and feels like 4c hair but as soon as water tpuches it...it collapses into 3b 4a curls that are well defind...in the summer my hair hold moisture for 5days in the winter,2days. I had to trim alot recently because I didn't moisturize my wash and go enough..now I'm twisted out. My question is will protective styling such as braids or Senegalese twist dry out my hair?

    Won’t blow drying your hair that often for a twist out cause heat damage and/ or breakage? Are there any other ways to stretch the hair & prep it for a twist out other than blowing it dry?

    ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ this!! THANK YOU!!
    People laughed at me when I was doing my WNG’s daily! But I noticed that when I was...my hair had MUCH MORE SHINE!! And I had LESS single strand knotting! I thought I was drowning my hair! Now I do my WNG’s every 2-3 days...and 3 is STRETCHING IT!! I can see the dullness starting... I live in INDY and I cannot do a WNG daily during the winter...but during the summer I usually do...I have a tapered cut and cannot do protective styles...I keep my sides and back cut low. In its natural state, my hair is WOOLY...so a twist out on top would not match the sides/back! Any suggestions?

      M. Tiffany Johnson I do wash and go’s every day, even in the winter. I just don’t have my hair as wet when I’m styling it in the winter. If I feel it’s to wet, I put my blow dryer on a lukewarm setting, low speed, and dry it a bit. I’m not outside more than a few minutes. My hair is super shiny and moisturized everyday.

    My hair stays wet for 2days after a wng...and it gets dryer quicker. Type 4 low porosity...twist outs stay moisturized all week.

    I still haven't figured out how to do a wash and go on my hair. I have 4c hair and the wash and go seems impossible. My hair starts to shrink up too fast and I don't get any curl definition.

      Make sure you’re hair is soaking wet when applying product. Also try the plopping method once you’re done.
      I do this overnight so it’s not dripping wet in the morning. I wake up with moisturized and defined hair.

    Oh Em Gee! Just did a twist out on wet hair. Left in the twists for four days and only lasted 1/2 day w twist out. In and out of the twist, my hair was a dry dry dry mess. I was sad because I’m always told twist outs are the best thing. My daughter can do twist outs on wet hair but she’s in the 3 range. Sidenote, I do love a wash and go, it can last me about four days and my hair feels way more moisturized than the twist out I just encountered. It was horrible.
