Oh, Mr. Tom! I was hollering at the screen while you were checking out the composted manure. Then I calmed myself and said, Mr. Tom's got this. Sure enough, a few minutes later you explained about watching out for bags that aren't fully composted. Homestead Heart posted a heartbreaking video recently about that very thing. They added Black Kow (?) compost to their soil and killed all their peppers and eggplants because they didn't realize the manure hadn't gotten fully composted. That's a hard way to "live and learn." Wish they'd noticed it sooner. 😢

Growing our own food is still the best option, farmers markets have become extremely expensive! Where we live, we all better get good at growing our own food. Too many food recalls, for it to be all legitimate.

Well Mr. Tom, I did go get my better boy tomato plants yesterday as planned. If I buy them early I try to get the 6 plants to a container to save a little. Bonnie had delivered to the store on the day prior on Wednesday. The 6 packs sell super quick and they were already sold out by the next day.
So all they had left was the single plants in a cup. Those are usually a little costlier but they are also a few inches taller. They were $4.99 per cup. A couple years ago I found myself in the same situation and I tried to hold out for another delivery of 6 packs the following week. Problem was…. There was never any more 6 packs and they had already sold out of the cups too. So I had to settle for some rutgers and celebrities. These were so so in my opinion. So this time I bit the bullet and got 50 cups. Sometimes a man has to do what a man has to do I guess. Good luck with your garden this year!!! Catch you on the next one!!!

Been eating from freezer soups and low sugar berry cobblers, yogurt and frozen homegrown berries etc, as for the past few days getting seedling tomato plants, flowers, greens, ready for a car club car show swap meet this Sunday as my son belongs to the car club. At our state fairgrounds. He enjoys so much my ex, his dad and I share a swap spot, he has toys and some car parts. I’ve been digging raspberry and blackberry plants to bring to. So much work but the car club specifically requested I come back this year. At 72 keeping body fueled with good food and water and intermittent rest breaks is mandatory. So grateful no cooking but just heating up. Thanks for the ride along Mr. Tom.

We no longer buy potting soil and other things at places like you visited. Instead we go to a landscaping place about 5 miles from out home and buy trailer loads of mulch and compost. It is a whole lot cheaper and is really good stuff for filling pots or spreading in our planting areas. They will sell you however much that you want. We have seen some with a pickup truck go in and get some in the back of their truck. So if you have a place like that close to home that might be a better place to buy what you need.

Just another reason for having backyard chickens - Free fertilizer. And really good fertilizer, too. I always compost what I clean out of the chicken coop. Chicken manure is very high in nitrogen, and if you think those Tractor Supply prices are high, just price a bag of composted hen manure! Zowie! Since I can't plant and tend my garden this year, I just let Elvis and the girls free-range on it. By the time I'm well again, they will have applied plenty of organic fertilizer! This year, however, I'm just going to have to get my gardening jones vicariously by watching yours grow and flourish! Take care, and God bless.

Hello Mr Tom, is there any advantage in using a packaged acidifier as opposed to a natural acidifier? I use my old coffee grinds and the blueberry bushes, daffodils, and even the grape vine loves it

Now I save and use coffee grounds to, but they take time to break down. They also do not change the PH as much as a sulfur acidifier does. Sulfur which is a natural element, is stronger and much quicker

Tom, if you trust it, then I will try it too. No truck loads of compost/manure this year. Too expensive from the farm and I will try this in the planting areas in a few weeks. Thank you!

Should’ve been making compost for years now. Grass clippings with leaves mix with small tiller pile up and wait. Repeat you will have more compost than you need

@@improvisedsurvival5967 I do have that and a small forest on property where we haven't "black gold" soil from under years of composted elements. I was interested in the manure/jumps mix to cut back on my labor for squash plants and beans. Not going to try... ty

@@Saoirse.n.Murphy the soil here is black rich full of worms about 2 ft deep then it starts to turn clay. Manure is good but I just use compose. Start my seeds in compost I screen into buckets then scoop into my seed starting pots. Ya some people soil sucks so you gotta amend it

Mr. Tom, what's up with the collard greens, when your existing collard greens continued to this day in 2024? I'm not upset, I'm more just trying to figure it out!😂

In September of 2022 I planted both Kale and collard greens in the fall. They survived the winter and grew all through 2023 , I did have three collards go to seed in the summer of 2023 but the rest did not . They continued to grow this spring. Then collards started blooming and are now going to seed. But the Kale never did and I just pulled it up today. You can see this in my walk about videos over the past growing seasons here on the channel
