Day 9 of our 1,000 kilometre gravel cycling adventure on The Great Trail Canada takes us from Castlegar, B.C. to Trail, B.C. Follow us as we ride 1,000 kilometres of gravel in some of the most spectacular settings in Southern British Columbia. This is the fourth in a series of videos chronicling our journey along the Great Trail Canada, formerly the Trans Canada Trail. We start our journey in Chilliwack, British Columbia and finish in the beautiful town of Fernie, nestled in the Rocky Mountains. We will be releasing a video for each leg of our journey every week for the next 12 weeks.

Love the emotion: 🐐 trail, frustrating, not pleasant, never ride this section again. However, you both survived the test. Way to go! Ride on...
😜
Thanks for posting your whole trip for us to enjoy - it brings back a lot of wonderful memories. When you were driving through Salmo, I was hoping you would stop and unload the bikes, because the Great Northern Rail Trail from Salmo to Nelson is one of the best sections of trail on that route. Looking forward to watching the Day 10 video - that is the only stretch I have not ridden between Hope and Calgary.
If our experience from Castlegar to Trail hadn’t been so bad we would have unloaded at Salmo! Thanks for watching!
I 2nd this comment, we did it in reverse and the Nelson -Salmo section was 👍👍
This was obviously quite challenging!
It was a tough day!
This was obviously a challenging day! I felt your pain!
It was frustrating!
Wonderful pictures! Thanks a lot!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Great video Jeremy and Catherine! I think I've watched this series three times now in prep for when we rode the BC Trail, in reverse from you guys, last year. We stopped in Rossland overnight and, remembering this video plus advice from a local friend, we decided to take the highway into Castlegar and beyond. I'm hoping to ride the BC Trail again next year and definitely plan to skip this section again 🤪 Thank you both for sharing your adventure!
Thanks for watching! We both loved this trip and would definitely do it again!
@@PiquePictures , me too, loved it and can't wait to ride it again!
I would guess a fat tire bike would be a better choice for this section. Thanks for the video series, we are enjoying them and planning an attempt on the kvr in the future when this covid thing is under control.
This was not a section for gravel bikes!!!!! Thanks for the positive feedback!
You will definitely enjoy the KVR in the Okanagan.
I have a wishful thought for you and everyone gravel riding at trails like that...wishful thought we can have a magic wand to turn gravel bikes to mountain bikes for those challenging sections. There are times I would go on a gravel ride and have that thought when approaching singletrack trails like those. I would check that area out with my mountain bike and do an out-n-back ride. Also, it would be great if there were some folks who can volunteer to clean up the trails (i.e. trim the overgrown green stuff). I am sorry that it was a challenging ride for you two and can definitely understand your frustration on that day. Overall, great videos as always. Thank you for continuing to share your gravel riding adventures as I always enjoy watching them and love the music selection you have. My husband and I can't wait when BC is ready for us in the USA to cross the border to visit as we love BC!
Agonizing trails that were supposed to be easy... That has happen a lot! But put that aside, to reach an area that you guy got to in 06:40 damn well made it worth the struggle! I do think however the latter part of the trail was designed for mountain bikes...
It would definitely have been a different experience on mountain bikes! That was one of our more challenging days on the trip! If I were to do it over again, I would want to find an alternative route!
Tough section but great video as always, thanks for sharing these
Appreciate your positive feedback!
I'd ride that section all day long ...
Really? Not my favourite part of our trip!
@@PiquePictures That's some good old single track, looks like the main road took over the rail trail and they gave you a car free option.
Good work you two, I want to do this ride.
Beautiful scenery. Good for both of you to tough it out on less than ideal trail conditions. It looks more like MTB territory! What type of bikes are you riding and what size tires? Merci! Alex :)
Specialized Diverge with 40mm tires. It was definitely an MTB ride.
@@PiquePictures Thanks! I ride 40mm tires too! I don't think I've ever seen the Trans Canada that rough in Ontario! Lol. Thanks for a great video! You two are brave and intrepid souls! :)
@@uhu69 Thanks!
Of the sections of the BC Trail your - which do you consider the worst and would not to again (such as Castlegar to Trail) unless those were fixed, repaired or maintained, had no SAG service and maybe encountered a medical emergency? As far as I know most of the BC Trail is not maintained and as such conditions can be questionable at anytime. Consider situations such as if you were riding alone, had no cell service (which is probably true for much of the BC Trail) and were bike packing versus credit card camping.
This section from Castlegar to Trail was definitely the worst. I know there has been much damage done to the trail between Merrit and Penticton. Hope this has answered your question.
@@PiquePictures I just saw where someone skipped the trail and just rode the highway from Castlegar to Trail and skipped that section of trail.
@@tombiggi1024 If I were to do this trip again, I would probably do the same!
what tires did you use on your bikes and is it a tubeless set up?
WTB Raddlers 40mm.
@@PiquePictures did they roll ok on pavement?
@@mattpilon2882 They were great!!!!!!
Thats funny the trail even looks bad for a hiker. I think i would just push on the road going north from castlegar to nelson.
It was not fun! It’s not really meant for gravel bikes.
@@PiquePictures ya even then i dont like branches macking against me. To tight and confined.
Canadian trails are just like goat paths in Romania or Bulgaria. Canadians do not spend money in maintaining or developing trails for cycling. If we did, tourists from all over the world would visit here in order to witness first hand the astonishing views and nature of the Canadian open land. That is the reason I prefer to spend the money to fly to Europe and cycle along the Rhine, the Moselle, the Danube, the Loire and so many other wonderful places where they have Eurovelos that are in outstanding condition, safe and pleasant to ride for hours and hours. Hopefully over the years things may improve.
I will say most of the trails we rode were wonderful! This part of the trail was the exception!
Was that really the BC Trail?
That was really the BC Trail!
@@PiquePictures it obviously needs work/maintenance. Would seem like cyclists do not generate enough revenue thru there for the locals to care. A good reason to skip the businesses and local community.
