People in the Australian Capital Territory have been able to use, possess and grow cannabis for nearly two years. The radical laws were introduced to steer people away from the criminal justice system, but a growing number of people are using the laws to produce their own medicinal cannabis.

I have had an interesting life coloured by experiences that I choose not to share in this forum. As a consequence, in my more mature years, I can't say that I'm a great fan of recreational drugs in any way shape or form and I consider cannabis to be anything but benign.
Despite my experiences, I don't believe that recreational drugs should be illegal and I certainly don't believe that their trade should be via the "black market".
Some drug users will be irreparably damaged as a consequence of their drug use. Some will not. Some drug users will progress from "soft" drugs to "hard" drugs. Some wont. Some will live in abject poverty as a consequence of their drug use while others may enjoy relative financial success. Some will be unemployable, others will have successful careers. Some will develop serious health issues, others wont.
For society to add criminality to the jack pot of challenges that drug users face is ludicrous. Our contemporary drug laws will one day be compared to the Salem witch trials. It is a shame that I'm part of that society.

I had LOTS of traumatic injuries and surgeries. I used to have to take anti-inflammatories and painkillers every day. It was wrecking my digestive system and I starter puking blood.
Since October 2018, when it was legalized here in Canada, I smoke weed or make butter with it and I have no pain and I can eat anything again.
It was a game changer. And it didn't wreck our youth. Everyone was buying it before anyways. At least now its controlled for contaminants, mold, and purity. And its CHEAPER. At least in some provinces.
We don't get marijuana tests at work. Cops and the military (not SF people I think) CAN smoke too. Just with intervals, like pilots and alcohol.
And the illegal dealers get WAY worst fines and jail time now, because they are in direct market competition with the government. And when there are $$$ involved, it gets serious. What was a slap on a hand and a cop putting your baggie in his back pocket before, is now thousands in fines and possible extented all-inclusive vacations.

@@davidbrayshaw3529 Most weed users do NOT progress to harder drugs. You have a personal bias there. And the environment you come from, is the USA, the land of hard drugs. Its not like that in Canada or many other places. The ones that get opioid addictions do NOT start with other drugs, they get hooked after some doctor prescribes it. Just like most people that enjoy drinking when having fun don't turn into drunks.
Some do. Sorry you saw it. But I'm 52 and I know hundreds of weed smokers that have normal full lives and relaxed evenings, but only ever met ONE heroin user and fired TWO crackheads before I recognized the signs and didn't hire them in the first place.
IF you graduate to hard stuff, its most probably because you have an addictive personality. And gambling or other things like that are also things you should steer away from.
BTW: One of my previous life experience was working in a psychiatric emergency, where we TRIED to help REAL addicts.

Sure, medicinal marijuana is a medical need so falls under the right for medical care and should be easily available. But calling the recreational use of marijuana a human right too sounds pretty silly comparatively... Let's not start abusing terms. Human rights abuse is issues like refugees being locked up inhumanely for years in Australia or Australians with disabilities being denied the services they need. You could argue it for people given unfair sentences. But saying stuff like marijuana legalisation for fun is a "human right" sounds super stupid and pretentious. Saying something would improve quality of life and provide economic opportunities is very different to calling it an actual human right.

The grow is more secure than being in your backyard, where the local teenagers can jump your fence & rip your plants & as stated in this video, the police can use their discretion as to whether you have a setup for personal use or commercial supply... 2 plants in a tent would not be consistent with a commercial grow setup in any way. You can grow 2 plants per person max 4 per household, but you can only possess 50g of dried cannabis. 1 plant could yield 500g or more. At least with an indoor plant you can keep them smaller, perhaps 50 to 100g per plant. If the laws were in touch with the consumer, then they should just allow a maximum of 2 pounds per person. Anything over will be confiscated. Most consumers wouldn't use 2 pounds a year but some do.

Would they say you can grow 2 apple trees but your only allowed to have 3kg of apples? So if I have just harvested, espcially for an outside grow, that 50g of dried bud will have to last me a whole year? And the whole "only grown naturally" law is a farce too. I'm allowed to grow every other plant with whatever artificial assistance I wish, why not this? @@SK-zi3sr i have no problem with regulation. as you say, it's just the fact that the current laws can give everyday good people criminal records that can stay with them for life just for possession of small quantities. even influence the outcome of their life journey. legality means approved (regulated) shops can sell weed and edibles that are of known quality and therefore much safer. dealers will then have competition to provide product which is more regular in quality. i won't buy stuff that the supplier won't smoke himself. alcohol and prescription meds (which are legal) both cause more domestic issues, hospitalisation and deaths than weed. 90% of weed users don't suffer the types of long term mental illness as alcoholics. only 4-6% of weed users will be killed by marijuana use and most of those are due to misadventure. most people if they smoke too much just go to sleep well before they could injure themselves. lol. never heard of a bunch of stoned people tuning on each other at parties because they all get mellow, laugh or cry and then hug it out. parties and social occasions involving excess drinking quite often end up with somebody wanting to fight everybody. aren't these alone good reason for legalisation? the main reason the government want to legalise weed is then they can get the money off tax for selling it. i'm sorry for the rant, i just feel very strongly about the issue.

I agree it could work for something like marijuana, which is not very dangerous. I also agree people with addictions should be sent to rehab and services, and not given prison sentences. But I don't really agree with very highly addictive, very dangerous drugs being available for anyone to buy. There are some drugs where the risks are too high and it would be unethical, in my view, to sell them. They'd be basically setting people up for addiction, in the same way opioids set up people for addictions. I saw so much of it working in pharmacy.

The medicinal effects are often greatly exaggerated and I think that's because people feel like it's the most compelling case to legalise it. I'd like to see it legalised so we can have an honest discussion about its medicinal benefits without people feeling like they need to lie to advocate for it.

Hey 'Mary' there's these things called 'greenhouses' they work great in Canberra, trust me. You don't need lights if you know what your doing, the 'toxicity' of using hydro chems would be a lot worse for your body, not to mention bad for the environment.

    • @2partiesnotpreferred226
      @2partiesnotpreferred226 2 года назад +5

I agree that greenhouses work well but hydroponics can be clean. Look at the research Dr Bruce Bugbee has done at Utah state university. The advantage of growing indoors is you can keep it hidden. The smell will attract all the undesirables. You can also use hydroponics outdoors. The reason hydro has a bad name is because these black market growers use nasty chemicals and they don't know what they are doing. Medical cannabis is grown with hydroponics.

Consuming edibles has a different feel and effect. Not everyone likes it as once you've eaten it the dose is no longer controllable. Smoking or vaping, allows for an instant effect that can restricted initially until the desired effect is achieved. So what works well for one person may not for the next.

THC and CBD are fat and alcohol soluble which is why they tend to be cooked in to butter or oil before being used to make edibles. Having the munchies and all you have are more brownies is a terrible combination.
Edibles also tend to have a different feel than smoking and take longer to take effect, which can cause people to over do it thinking they didn't eat enough.
You can't OD on weed (as far as I know), but you can get so high you have to hold on to the grass so you don't fall off the earth.

When I lived on the Gold Coast, I tried to get some weed but all people had were cocaine or heroin so I can see people turning to harder drugs if weed is not available at that point in time as an alternative to alcohol.
