  • The U.S. Surgeon General wants to require social media to have a health warning, similar to the warning that is found on tobacco products. It's clear that social media causes a number of mental health issues--especially in children!

We need to change the way we interact socially and rebuild communities. I and most other young people i know would greatly prefer meeting people in person but it always feels tedious to near impossible to even find peers in person. The primary reason young people use technology and social media so much is because there are very few alternatives in most places

    • @ringwoorm7985

Almost all places and ways people would meet in the past have been either shut down or made inaccessible for one reason or another. And most young people dont even get to develop actual social skills because those who raised us would actively inhibit that which makes it harder.

Now sure these days I care a lot less, and most of my friends are other Linux users, but I think we adults can easily forget what it was like socially to be a teen, and how much your friends do matter during that time of life. I wonder if RUclips and Reddit count, for example, there are comments and user-generated content, so it should count. But this would heavily skew the numbers against sites like Twitter or Facebook, which I can't imagine anyone spending more than a few minutes a day on - in part because these sites are so horribly optimised it is impossible to go more than 100 posts deep before it becomes unusable.

Everyone has their own reality evaluation mechanism located in that person's own brain. In my reality, the Surgeon General's warning, right on cigarette packs, contributed 0% to reducing smoking. Doing things you are not supposed to do is an attraction to teenagers. Danger is itself the attraction.
When I was a kid (born 1946), personal testimonials from adults (like your parents) against smoking were everywhere and constant. Even so, being an adult was an ultimate attraction at the time, so if adults smoked, smoking was one ultimate attraction. By now, that has gone through an inversion. So Bob Dylan would sing in the late 60's, " I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now." Rejecting anything adult-like was transformed into an attraction. Smoking, responsibility, self-reliance, neatness, thinking, etc. The smoking cycle, generation to generation, was broken by adults striving to be as juvenile as they can. Kids now strive to be adults by becoming more juvenile.than the adults. This takes more than a Surgeon General's warning to fix. Adults have to become the adults.
You can do it. You don't have to go through the Surgeon General.
(P.S. DT is one of the high points on RUclips.)

The job of a government is to protect its citizens from threats both foreign and domestic and to enforce order for peaceful living. Parents should have the freedom to know that they don't need to monitor every little thing their children are doing ("helicopter parenting") because they do not need to worry that some scum-sucking capitalist will attempt to ruin their children's lives to buy himself a new yacht.
It also difficult to give an individual child a flip phone and leave it at that, since all of his peers will have smartphones, and your kid will become a social pariah. This needs to be done collectively.

The problem should be on the shoulders of their parents. They should be in charge of their children. Some warnings will make many kids curious to see what they should not view. Now, some warnings may help. Most of us are not perverts.

well its easy to say that. sadly "the state" has destroyed that via things like welfare payments, destruction of the monetary system and destruction of local economies. so if you manage to have a mom/dad that is together they can't parent when they both have to work 4 jobs 6/7 days a week just to "make it"

Yes, social media can be dangerous for teens and tweens, but that's a reason why parents need to be parents and regulate their own kids' computer exposure rather than bothering with unnecessary rules like this. Quite frankly, and with no offense intended to DT, I think this proposed rule is really dumb and unhelpful.

How, everything online purpose built with making them as additive as possible in mind. The only solution is regulation, unless you want “we investigated ourselves and found we did nothing wrong”. Don’t get me wrong, these laws are about protecting megaCorp.

@@JorgeLopez-qj8pu Agreed, but again: this is why parents need to parent their children. Not only are warning labels a do-nothing solution but they won't work. It's going to do about as much good as warning labels on cigarettes do for committed smokers.

@@ringo8410 “committed smokers” sure, but regulating it, did help in stopping the promotion of it. Flintstones and cool Moose promoted these things to kids until laws were made stopping them. The government should be doing more than just putting warning labels.
“this is why parents need to parent their children” be honest, so many people Endsley complain about big brother and helicopter parents checking every little thing they do. In what way are parents supposed to be informed when companies can keep running misinformation campaigns about everything. Hello, global warming.

@@JorgeLopez-qj8pu No, you're correct that parents need to be informed, and it's not always their fault that they're not. I'm just skeptical that this warning label is going to actually do much good. Criminalizing (or at least saying that something is dangerous) can make it more appealing.
Given a lot of recent events, too, I worry that this is another crack at destroying what's left of the free and open internet. But that's more political than I really wanted to get in DT's comments so I'll leave it at that.

Social media is fine, it's just bad parenting as far as kids go...
Now do a rant about alcohol, which does the exact same thing that you're renting about and. Do a rant about cigarettes which does the exact same thing that you're talking about and drugs which does the exact same thing you were talking about.
All it boils down to personal responsibility as far as 18 and up.
