  • Tuning is Open-D - D A D F# A D
    Hey guys! I am just now getting around to my second favorite 3eb song of all time, "The Background" which is off of their 1997 self-titled debut. I cannot even begin to describe how wonderfully written this tune is. The intro is actually the bass played by none other than Arion Salazar, the original bassist of the group, and really takes this track to another level. Kevin Cadogan later comes in with some unique flanger effects and feedback which add some unique layering to this track. His incredible riffing really shows how Open-D tuning can be used in a variety of ways with unique chord voicings, heavy distortion, and much more. The outro riff to this song is absolutey bonkers and such a blast to play, so thank you Kevin for that brilliant addition to this song.
    This track was written by both Stephan Jenkins the lead vocalist and original/founding lead guitarist Kevin Cadogan. Fun fact, Kevin stated in an interview this track almost didn't make the self-titled record and that it was planned to be scrapped for a future album. I love "Blue" but "The Background" fits perfectly on the first record and it wouldn't be the same without it. I also have to give Brad Hargreaves on drums the recognition he deserves as he contributed greatly to this song as well as Eric Valentine who produced the self-titled debut.
    Thank you for watching, and be sure to like this video and subscribe to the channel if you have not already. Cheers!

    Hell yes, doing Kevin Cadogan's guitar parts justice. The whole first album is a gem of emotion. Whether it's the fury and divinity of Motorcycle Drive-By or the heartbreak of The Background, it's all there. They made some magic!

      Thank you! I agree, they made two unbelievable first records with Cadogan and the self-titled debut is all killer no filler. I don’t know if using one of his personal instruments has helped but it makes me feel like I am apart of him somehow.

      I wanted to see XEB and knew a few folks who had seen them. I loved the concept but felt it was sad Kevin, Arion, & Tony were unable to make peace with Stephan and Brad. I guess all we can hope is that they will someday.
      Arion has seen some of my stuff and Kevin has reached out to me on Twitter a few times in the past. My dad is exactly 1 day older than KC and he turned me on to these guys when I was growing up. I’m just trying to bring as much recognition to them as possible on my platform.

      On that note, I agree, Tony’s performance was killer at the HOB in 00’. He really took Kevin’s guitar parts to a different dimension and made them his own which I liked. Both very slept on guitarists over the last 2 and a half decades give or take.

God of Wine is tuned to D A D E A D and some people like to take shortcuts to avoid detuning. The Background is just D A D F# A D but again some like to alter the way it’s played, which won’t work.

      @@TheSquiddlyspooge Yeah man make sure to tune slightly sharp to match the recording. It’s like that for many of the early songs.
      The guitar brand Kevin used is MJ Guitars Engineering Mirage series. They aren’t around anymore but they were a small handmade guitar company from Montana and later Santa Rosa Ca. I have 2 of Kevin’s and then another from Ed Roland (Collective Soul).
      Great guitars and I highly recommend them if you get the chance to buy one!

      @BDKelso2000  2 месяца назад

      @@TheSquiddlyspooge At one point MJ Guitars were located right outside of San Francisco in Rohnert Park, so I would imagine that’s how Kevin came to know them.
      He used a Musicman Sabre II on the self-titled debut in 1997 and then in late 1998 he appeared on Jay Leno with a silver sparkle Mirage GT and then MJ Guitars Engineering sent him some gifts in the mail for playing their guitars. He only used MJ guitars on Blue and his solo recordings. Mark built him dozens of guitars and I’d be willing to bet he probably got them for free or for a discount considering how popular 3eb were at the time.
