My dad is white and he used to take me to black hair salons when I was younger, but that was before YT. He would ask the women what products to put in my hair, and how to care for it. He watched them style my hair, ask questions and try to do it himself. He bought a hotcomb, beeswax, greece ect. even relaxers and had my hair laid out. Most times my ponytails were still crooked so I hated it and didn't appreciate it at the time, but as an adult looking back, he didn't do bad at all for a single dad!

Oh yes. I am a Occupational Therapist Asst. and when I would walk into patients room I did more than just exercises. A lot of time in the hospital it's all a numbers and it's a get in and get out situation. But since I worked prn. on the weekends. I would have then do their hair, makeup, stand to walk to the restroom to brush their teeth or wash their face. Afterwards they would feel so much better and be ready to do exercises or even feel accomplished that they did it themselves. Rehabilitation is not just the outside but how you feel inside even if you are in the hospital. #HealthcareWorker #OT

My whole family is black and they don’t even know how to do hair. They completely damaged mine.
All my family knew was relaxers because black hair is ugly and wild. You should never go out of the house without either braids- or your hair straight.
My mom didn’t know how to do braids or straighten hair so my hair always looked a hot mess. Every once in a while my older sister would come in town and braid my hair so tight I got bumps on my head and I cried myself to sleep because it hurt.
Every two weeks I would go to the salon to get my hair flat ironed. Guess who’s mid waist hair completely broke off? Mine.
When I was 13 ALL my hair started breaking off, and I went from my hair being down my back to my hair being shoulder length. It didn’t stop there tho.
It continued breaking off to the point I had a spot on the middle of my head that was 1 inch long and wouldn’t grow (still doesn’t) and now my hair doesn’t grow past my ears.
I did a big chop in August, I was almost completely bald and my hair is CURLY again. It was SO wild to see my hair curly, because my hair was so damaged before that it was naturally straight and bushy.
The middle part on my hair has doubled to 2 inches long, and my hair is down to my ears if I stretch the curls. But guess what I get a lot now?
Backhanded comments from my family. My grandmother is constantly telling me to “do something with your hair” “why would you want your hair to look like that” “you need to comb your hair” and my mother says the EXACT same things to my perfectly curly hair.
My hair isn’t all over the place, it isn’t bushy, I use a curl smoothie which makes my curls look juicy, but it still appears wild and ugly in my mother and grandmothers eyes. They are ashamed of my hair.
I’m 19 and I’m JUST starting to LIKE my hair because of how they make me feel about my hair, but there is NOTHING wrong with the hair that naturally comes out of my head, or anyone else’s head.

Livi ⭐️⭐️ Damn, you almost made me shed a thug tear. I grew up the same way. When I was 12, I visited my grandmother for the summer with extensions in. The whole summer I would call my mom begging her to let me take those braids out but she kept saying I’d ruin my hair. Welp, by the time I went back home my hair was really tangled in the extensions. My mom immediately cut my hair to the new growth. Before I put the braids in my hair was just passed my shoulders. After the cut I couldn’t even make a ponytail 😢 and my hair journey just went downhill from there. As soon as I moved out in my early twenties, I went natural. 8years ago I got locs and honestly it has been the most empowering experience. I’m rambling lol I just want you to know you’re beautiful young lady. I’m so happy to hear you’re on a journey toward self love and discovery... and you’re still so young. As you know, sometimes the older folk can be so stuck in their ways and unfortunately, they (some) have been so conditioned to see the ugly in us that they really struggle to see the beauty in themselves. Keep loving on you, little sis.... you’re an inspiration!

    • @livi9591

Merica Willis I do now! Just the other day my grandmother started her usual up because I wore my hair curly and for the first time I stood up to her and said “there is nothing wrong with my hair. It looks good the way it is. It’s MY hair.” And she responded back “no it doesn’t” and went on about her way instead of badgering me more and I’ve never felt more empowered honestly.
I love my grandparents dearly and I usually let their comments slide because I respect them but I just couldn’t that day.
I’ve been unapologetically curly for 5 months now. Every time I style my hair I like them a little bit more than I did the last time.

Brklyn J9 thank you and so are you! Story just hits so close to home I’m glad you shared yours too. When my hair all broke off, (before the big chop) my mother would make me constantly have a sew in. It only made it worse but she couldn’t be bothered with it but then would always yell and blame me saying I should know how to take care of my hair.... well mother, you never taught me that, in fact, you haven’t taught me anything, how was I supposed to know?
My older sister got lucky because she had family members who taught her how to do hair, and for a while it was a source of income for her. No one ever taught me. I didn’t even know how to correctly shampoo and condition until I was 13 because I was never allowed to.
The older generation definitely are stuck in their ways sometimes and I see a lot of young girls like me who also feel the same way I used to about their hair and even though I don’t LOVE my hair, it HURTS me to know that girls hate their hair, or they hate the fact that they’re black, because of what the older generation has instilled in them. It isn’t even the young kids bullying anymore! It’s the grown ups! And it’s SAD.

The woman teaching the family hairstyles made me cry. I’m 27 and I’m just learning how to do my hair, because when I was adopted as a child, I was never provided the right hair care. I remember they would get a little mad at me for using too much shampoo/conditioner but my hair was thick and curly, not thin and straight like theirs (they would say “I only use a dime size amount so why do you use so much”). It was never styled and I was teased by my family when I did try to style it. My family always encouraged relaxer treatments from Walmart that ruined my hair, and took me to hairdressers that had no clue how to cut curly hair. I hated my hair so much and the first opportunity I got I bought a straightener. I also haven’t had my hair cut in years due to fear . I know it’s small but it’s affected me a lot.

It amazes me how insensitive parents can be. I think they often don't realize how important it is for girls to feel pretty and comfortable with themselves. I don't have curly hair, rather the opposite, but it's so thin my mom once called my ponytail a rat's fart. Semi-jokingly, but that has stayed with me forever. She also commented on my features and clothes a lot and I've had friends with similar experiences. It's so easy to ruin a girl's confidence.

White parents, please, when you adopt a black child, please learn to do some styles on their hair. Don’t just send them off to the nearest African braid shop. Why? 1. Not all black hair care “professionals” know how to take care of the hair. Sometimes they can braid too tightly, breaking the hair off and or ruining the hairline. They can also burn the hair to the point where the curls are lost. Educating yourself about the hair will help you see signs on if the person doing the hair is doing it properly. And 2. It’s a bonding experience, you can create many beautiful moments as you both figure out how to take care of black hair.
I know black hair can look intimidating, I know I’ve had it all my life, but don’t give up. Your daughter/son will appreciate it.

Teaching girls, especially those of color, to love themselves and their hair is a VERY important thing. Black girls are sometimes taught from a very young age that their hair can't be tamed and are left to believe what has been said about their hair. As a black girl, I know all too well about this. I recently stopped relaxing my hair after seeing other people embrace and love theirs. I've also realized, relaxers were made for black people to "fit in", and make their hair seem more "acceptable". All my friends and I have stopped using relaxers as it can also cause health issues but mainly to grow healthy natural hair. So, it is important to teach black girls to love themselves because as soon as you do that, they learn to accept themselves in their skin and hair. So don't start crying about white people not being appreciated for the fact that they took in these girls.
    periodt.

Breona Warren I hate gel on my hands so I can’t use certain products. I definitely don’t like it slicked on my forehead. If I need to slick my hair down, I do it to the side or back, hair on hair, not hair on face.

It's childish imo. Adults should not be slicking down their edges. I worry about adults who do that, something is not right with them. LOL

No Name i can see if they do too much because that don’t look right either way but something simple like swoops shouldn’t be a problem. it’s something started within black and latino culture so we should be able to use it.

All these moments were great but that last one got to me. Hopefully they were able to get things back on track and have some time for the relationship.

The second woman said that they don't know what to do and you can't just know you have to be taught I love because it was nice for people to know that just because you adopt a child of colour isn't enough. When children are fostered or adopted it is already a very difficult thing to talk about, or think about and she was right with saying that little things like brushing our hair or painting our nails. It's important because it makes us feel like. Yes we are wanted, and these people do care
