Hope you read this. you can tell a lot from the meat spinning on the grill. the first and last kebap places you went to have layered meat. this means actaul cuts of meat stacked on top of eachother and means higher quality meat. the other like Can Bey are just minced meat pressed together, hence the uniform color. its usually a lot cheaper, and blander tasting. thats probably why Honza said it tasted normal.
You are right the difference is that the layered meat is called Shawarma and the minced meat is called Kebab. People often confuse it and think its all kebab. Shawarma is from the arabic countries and Kebab is from Turkey originally i've been told.

Since I got to kebabs less than 1 a year I never noticed that, I just remembered loving Gemüse Corner Kebab and disliking Can Bey, that must have played a big role :) thanks for explaining this
Döner Kebab is in bread like sandwich, Durum is wrapped like a tortilla! Both Delicious, for me durum is better because it has low bread to meat ratio!

afaik, "Döner" refers to meat grilled on a revolving spit, traditionally served on a plate with rice and salad. the "sandwich" and "dürüm" sauce-drenched variants are the late night munchies variants famous everywhere but Turkey I think ;) (PS: while the "sandwich" is "more bread", the "dürüm" is pan-fried in fat like a crepe. so... choose your caloric devil)
Kebab is the worst Junk food. Often they put the meat again into the fridge. Often it is just a sausage, includes a lot of chemicals and bread. If it is real "meat" it still contains 60% minced meet + pulse some junk.
The gemuse corner kebab also has curry (kari) sauce, they also add roasted vegetables to the kebab, potato crisps, green & red bell pepper. You pay a little bit more (150kč) but the quality of all the ingredients is phenomenal so that alone beats all the other places. Also the line outside during those mentioned peak times clearly speaks for itself.
From a Turkish perspective, I would say Royal grill seems the best one tbf. I know the whole kebab meat in Europe is delivered from a factory whereas in Turkey that's not the case. It's all prepared by a chef of the kebab restaurant. Royal grill's kebab seems the restaurant-made, but others seems frozen factory-made
You are true. Im living in Germany and 99% of Our kebabs is cheap crushed meat with Bones 😫. When i was in Istanbul i Loved the real meat Like Adana Kebab 😋
There are sadly only few places with fresh restaurant made kebab/gyros/shawarma in Prague. One of my favourite is "Al Dimashqi" tastes unreal 😍 and every fan of Shawrma or lamb halal meat should really go for a visit.

The Gemüse Döner style Döner Kebap was introduced first in Germany (Berlin I think) in the 90s, I guess they want to link themselves to that origin. Or they are simply trying to attract german tourists maybe?
I love Indian and Nepalese food. I don't know why exactly but those tastes are just perfect for me. My spice rack is filled with herbs and spices from India, I make my own chai and I do my best to replicate various dishes from India. Sadly my family does not appreciate some of those spices like asafoetida or black stone flower but that's their problem as it means more food for me. :-D
Brings some good food memories, the best shawarma/gyro/doner that I ever had was in Dubai in the 1990's. There was a place in Al-Ghurair Center and it was run by a Greek or Armenian man, and the way he did his rolls was to put them under a sandwich grill to crispen the flat bread(Lebanese khubz). This made it super delicious, and we often went there to have some.
In Turkish we have a proverb ''Atın ölümü arpadan olsun'', in English ''Let the horse die from barley'' meaning what is the point of living if you can't eat what you love😁

Ahh Mahir Kebab, especially the one on Kubanske Namesti. ❤️ My favourite so far and I live just around the corner! I need to try the one in Podoli, I have driven past it so many times and there is always a line.
Here in most of Canada a kebab usually refers to meat or meat and veggies on a stick. We usually refer to Doner Kebab as a Shawarma. They are similar but their place of origin is different.
People, almost everywhere is industrial mixture that look like meat, but it's not real meat. Only few place in Prague have real meat in ther kebab. For me best of all is Istanbul, it's now moved to Krakovska street. It's real calf meat flavor, and reasonale price. Also good one is Ali Baba on Holesovice.
I love a good kebab! I found one place in Berlin a few years ago, it was amazing!!! And that's the minimum standard. I'll have to go to Prague again and try to find one better.
Finally, a video about something what I really like! Kebab is one of the main things I miss, living in the US. Side Kebab on Karlovo Náměstí is my favourite overall, but Royal Kebab at Lezarska Tram Stop and Kebab Star on Národní Třída are best to pickup before taking the night trams home after a long night of drinking. 😋🍺🌯 P.S. - You will pay the price for "extra spicy" the next day, but it is so worth it!
Janek I am from Turkey. What you are eating is not called kebab here in my country. It is called " tavuk dürüm. dürüm or like Arabic countries say shawarma. Kebap is something different. Btw if you ask me you can eat best Turkish food in Prague in Istanbul restaurant which is so close to Wencesslas square
You are right, but tavuk is only the name of the meat. Döner Kebab is more a german-turkish creation of famous Kadir Nurman in West Berlin, Germany in the 1970ies. With a lot of sauce and salad inside pide bread. In cacik sauce is no mint, like in typical turkish cusine. And its a standard that also the turkish people say "mit scharf" = acı Nowadays Döner Kebab or short only Döner is the most favourite Fast Food in Germany.

OK, I know that the Turkish kebab places in your country throw around the term "kebab" for every kind of meat sandwich, but in most of the rest of the world, "kabab" has a specific meaning, and it is not a sandwich made with slices of meat cut from a vertical spit. Most people call what you are eating a "shawarma" sandwich or a "gyro," depending on the type of meat. The term "kabab" is mostly used when describing a dish that is made from either ground meat or solid chunks of meat that is cooked on a skewer over a grill. So you might want to use more precise terminology if you don't want to confuse everyone outside of central Europe.
I was living in Zizkov when I was a student, and I always, when I had some money, went to a Royal Kebab Grill (back then, it was called just Queen's Kebab or just Royal I think? It was between 2015 and 2018) and always had an amazing doner! The owners were two guys, not sure where they were from, but they were super nice and friendly, giving me discounts and putting more meat for me! :D I left Prague in 2018, and didn't come back since, but I'm just glad to see that their restraunt now is more polished and more expensive-looking kind of place! That's so nice! :D
The origin of döner comes from ottoman area where in Bursa(in Turkey) it was started to be eaten as only meat, some rice and tomato slices. We converted it into döner kebap(where it’s a plate filled with meat, tomato and rice(sometimes with salad). In the middle of 1900s döner was spreaded to countries, shawarma in arabic nations, gyros in Greece(after greeks in turkey moved back) and in EU later 60s. A turkish immigrant named Kadir Nurman gets the trademark “döner kebab” where he puts many dishes inside of kebab in the bread. This became very popular in Europe but it’s not so founded in Turkey since the kebab with many dishes is not so much how we used to eat” and same thing for Europeans as to eating turkish doner. A note that the döner kebab in Europe can be influenced by the turkish street food named Kumpir where we put dishes inside of a big and well cooked potato and put some butter & cheese in it
Turkish Arkabas.... we like really the turkish cusine. Really! Sis Et, Sac Kavurma, Ayran, Cezerie, Adana, Köfte and all the others... But Döner Kebab was found in West-Berlin, Germany by a Inventor with turkish roots. Turkish people come to Germany to eat the Real Döner Kebab. The difference is the sauce and the salad inside Döner Ekmek. Yes Kumpir is nice, but the sample was, that Customers in Germany loves fish or meat in a roll. Like Bulletenbrötchen (typical Berlin) or the famous Matjes. Also 3 (sausages) in a roll ( Nuremberg speciality) or the good old Hamburger were very goog examples. A perfect sample is also Pastirma Sandwich (Jewish, German, NY Style) or pulled pork, like a "Bratensemmel". Moast of the meat used is prepared and frozen in a factory. A good kebab meat it's locally prepared and it's much more healthy and delicious, you can spot it vert easy in the video, the frozen meat on the grill is very compact, the one prepared locally has a different texture and look...the last place had the real one.
Could you also make video on Indian restaurants in Prague ? When I was checking on Bolt Food, I found out that there are more than 40 Indian restaurants in Prague
eating kebab with a fork is a no go, you would never see something like that in germany (because the bread here holds the fillings inside better together)
I'm mesmerized at all these delicious kebabs. It's my to go food whenever I travel through Europe - it's delicious, affordable, healthy, packed with proteins, and generously served. Plus, for some reason it never really caught on in my country =(
I hear you but kebab is far from being healthy. The meat used in 90 % of the places is the absolute cheapest hyper-processed meat made of the most undesirable parts of the animal and reconstructed into a meat slab with tons of salt added.

When I as a Beliner see that one eats a Dönner with a fork, it hurts in my heart. Just for info, the Dönner Kebab that we now know throughout Europe, was invented in Berlin.

The general rule is - the closer you are to the Berlin - the capital city of Turkey - the better the kebabs are. I was born in the north-west of poland and throughout my life i've moved to the east - i really miss the kebabs i could eat as 15 year old.

Gumuse is definitely great. However, there is Istanbul kebab in the center close to the museum they have the best beef kebab, the proper kebab which you get in Turkye
Basically all Kebab places in Prague do make lamb kebabs as well. However, Czech people generally like either a mixed one or chicken only versions for some reason (me included). Perhaps the reason is that lamb dishes are not common in traditional Czech cuisine, so people are not used to the taste.
once the covid madness ends eventually, I'll definitely be back to prague, even if it's just for a weekend (after all, it's not that far from Vienna by train). I won't go for a kebab sandwich though - there's so many delicious things to eat after all! (and I'd rather have a greasy grilled sausage at ~2am with another beer ;) )

We had some wraps from Original Shawarma in Vodičkova and it was a banger, had it late night and it was delicious through and through. If you want a bigger meal I would suggest the 'Original Talir' option that comes with fries, sauce, coleslaw veggies and chilies at 145 crowns. Definitely one of my favourite joints!

You should try Original Shawarma and Kebab at Vodickova, it is the absolute best for me and authentic! A second place is Sayf near old town.

OK, I know that the Turkish kebab places in your country throw around the term "kebab" for every kind of meat sandwich, but in most of the rest of the world, "kabab" has a specific meaning, and it is not a sandwich made with slices of meat cut from a vertical spit. Most people call what you are eating a "shawarma" sandwich or a "gyro," depending on the type of meat. The term "kabab" is mostly used when describing a dish that is made from either ground meat or solid chunks of meat that is cooked on a skewer over a grill. So you might want to use more precise terminology if you don't want to confuse everyone outside of central Europe.
You should definitely try Ali Baba in Karlin, where we have been there last week and amazed the taste of their kebab.

I was living in Zizkov when I was a student, and I always, when I had some money, went to a Royal Kebab Grill (back then, it was called just Queen's Kebab or just Royal I think? It was between 2015 and 2018) and always had an amazing doner! The owners were two guys, not sure where they were from, but they were super nice and friendly, giving me discounts and putting more meat for me! :D
I left Prague in 2018, and didn't come back since, but I'm just glad to see that their restraunt now is more polished and more expensive-looking kind of place! That's so nice! :D

The origin of döner comes from ottoman area where in Bursa(in Turkey) it was started to be eaten as only meat, some rice and tomato slices. We converted it into döner kebap(where it’s a plate filled with meat, tomato and rice(sometimes with salad). In the middle of 1900s döner was spreaded to countries, shawarma in arabic nations, gyros in Greece(after greeks in turkey moved back) and in EU later 60s. A turkish immigrant named Kadir Nurman gets the trademark “döner kebab” where he puts many dishes inside of kebab in the bread. This became very popular in Europe but it’s not so founded in Turkey since the kebab with many dishes is not so much how we used to eat” and same thing for Europeans as to eating turkish doner. A note that the döner kebab in Europe can be influenced by the turkish street food named Kumpir where we put dishes inside of a big and well cooked potato and put some butter & cheese in it

But Döner Kebab was found in West-Berlin, Germany by a Inventor with turkish roots. Turkish people come to Germany to eat the Real Döner Kebab. The difference is the sauce and the salad inside Döner Ekmek. Yes Kumpir is nice, but the sample was, that Customers in Germany loves fish or meat in a roll. Like Bulletenbrötchen (typical Berlin) or the famous Matjes. Also 3 (sausages) in a roll ( Nuremberg speciality) or the good old Hamburger were very goog examples. A perfect sample is also Pastirma Sandwich (Jewish, German, NY Style) or pulled pork, like a "Bratensemmel". My favourite: Adana Sis Kebab, this is original turkish and is completly different from Döner Kebab.

Moast of the meat used is prepared and frozen in a factory. A good kebab meat it's locally prepared and it's much more healthy and delicious, you can spot it vert easy in the video, the frozen meat on the grill is very compact, the one prepared locally has a different texture and look...the last place had the real one.

I hear you but kebab is far from being healthy. The meat used in 90 % of the places is the absolute cheapest hyper-processed meat made of the most undesirable parts of the animal and reconstructed into a meat slab with tons of salt added.

Basically all Kebab places in Prague do make lamb kebabs as well. However, Czech people generally like either a mixed one or chicken only versions for some reason (me included). Perhaps the reason is that lamb dishes are not common in traditional Czech cuisine, so people are not used to the taste.

once the covid madness ends eventually, I'll definitely be back to prague, even if it's just for a weekend (after all, it's not that far from Vienna by train). 'Bistro Lanka' on Mlady Horakove does the best kebabs. It's now called 'Tasty Doner Kebab like in Istanbul' (the one near the Hotel Belvedere)

We had some wraps from Original Shawarma in Vodičkova and it was a banger, had it late night and it was delicious through and through. If you want a bigger meal I would suggest the 'Original Talir' option that comes with fries, sauce, coleslaw veggies and chilies at 145 crowns. Definitely one of my favourite joints!
