Got sick after Christmas and came back shooting with bad scores. I started working on my stance and head position. I move up the stock and it helped keep my eyes on the clay better and the butt of the stock pressed to the shoulder.
I'm a small lady at 5'3", my first gun is a little Nikko 812, she's small and light and from the first time I shot with her my coach said she was tte right gun for me. Most gun fitters would say it's a bit too small for me but I shoot much better with my hands closer to my body. Now that I'm getting more into shooting I'm on the lookout for something newer so I'll be doing exactly what you suggest in this video and trying some different guns at a shooting school and with my coach before making my next purchase 🤩
Good points in this David, I mainly shoot sporting with my MK70 Trap gun. Every now and again I shoot DTL to practice gun mount and going away birds.I can hit the targets going on the angle but seem to miss alot of the straight targets.
I'm 6-1 with a 6-4 wingspan and 185 pounds...had a pachmayer recoil pad installed on my browning super light feather and the extra length keeps me from crowding my trigger had and the extra weight helps with the recoil :)
I am right hand shooter with checking my right eye is dominance, l use my trap gun with adjustable comb shooting at pattern board, finding the pallet left 2 inches off the centre, how can l adjust 2 inches right, thanks
I live in a major US Metropolitan area and there aren't any stores with a decent selection of good shotguns, let alone a school that has a range AND sells guns!
What's your take on being too high over the rib? Obviously blocking your shooting side eye with the action by being too low is the cardinal sin, but when you get shooters that come to you and have become comfortable with a higher than normal eye postion over the rib, do you attempt to correct that? Or do you think that is more personal preference? I see a lot of variation here among the pros, even some pros that are so high over the rib they do not even make contact with the stock i.e. Joe Fanizzi shooting his semi auto.
The thing you say about buying a gun that fits doesn’t apply when your above average or under average that’s when you should buy a gun then have it fit my biggest issue with shotgun shooting has been gunfit and unable to get comfortable with 95% of guns being beaten up buy your average gun isn’t pleasant !
I bought my ATA from my shooting school oak Lodge heartlypool Ron with years of experience helped me choes the right gun for me and fitted it. I just bought a franchi for pigeon shooting had a go with other guns not one is as good as my ATA because it fits. That gun is a life long gun. David is absolutely right get your gun from a shooting school.
Dave the best gun for a small guy is a 20gauge and a auto the best selling gun in england is Turkish semi auto 350 pound. You can make shims and I like 5half pounds because I'm older no effort enjoy the movie
I have an MK70 Sport. I tend to shoot LOW with it. In order to shoot high I have to press my head down on the stock until all I can see is the bead. People tell me that I have to hold my head high in order to shoot high, yet I find the opposite is true. Help.
So I've been debating on getting a sxs or an over and under for sporting clays. I like the look of the sxs. However, I've been concerned because I heard sxs need to be fitted to you in order to shoot well. Is this true, or can I shoot just as well with an sxs out of the box as an over an under?
Thanks for your comment and yes you can shoot a side by side just as well as a over and under we would recommend a 2nd hand AYA they are great vale for money thanks TSC team.
The Gun Fit company so in field fits David. Matt takes the try gun out on the field and fits it to clients when they shoot. Not sure what you mean by saying “the gun fit company fits guns without shooting them. Very wrong information here. I speak very highly of Matt, even though I fit all my own guns now.
David knows Matt him self he was not saying about his company’s he was just saying about company’s that fit guns at shows and in shops with out shooting them that was what David was meaning thanks for your comment TSC team
Thanks for your comment and a great comment if you would like to email contactus@theshootingchannel.co.uk we can try and help you with this. Thanks TSC Team.
New guns don't seem to fit me i am 5'7" ( like the CZ Bob white I see too much rib) but guns about 1959 and older ( Browning Superposed, Parker bros. s x s ) pull up great and i just see the front bead with out thinking about it. Why is this?
* Probably because those older guns have more drop in the stock, particularly at the point where your cheek meets the stock, than the newer ones. I'm guessing that you stand more erect than David, and bring the gun stock to your face instead of hanging your head out and mounting the gun stock low in your shoulder pocket. David has trained himself to conform to his preferred gun stocks. If you notice his posture, you can see why he mounts the gun the way he does. I like the way the old sxs's fit me, but then I shoot with my head up so my guns demand more fitting with more drop and cast off. I don't like the idea of fitting myself to a gun. That might be OK for shooting clay targets, bit it's not OK for a hunting gun, IMO.
Absolutely not! As long as the makers knows what they are doing you will enjoy you shooting more than going down David’s route. I bought my last two guns from a gunsmith who “fitted” them to me, I then went to my local shooting school for a lesson. The first thing my instructor did was check my gun fit, he said it was a perfect fit and if I missed the clays it would be down to technique and experience! I’m just a hobby clay shooter but enjoy it more knowing my kit if fit for purpose 😂 And I’ve only just started clay shooting at 70+ years. People, we don’t always have to agree with David😂😂
Are you serious! Gun fit is far more important for English Sporting or FITASC than it is for Olympic Trap or Ball trap 😂 there are far more angles in the first two which affect shoulder fit, dear me 😂😂
I’m looking for a gun now. This was very helpful! I have been noticing the same conditions of my alignment you are mentioning.
Got sick after Christmas and came back shooting with bad scores. I started working on my stance and head position. I move up the stock and it helped keep my eyes on the clay better and the butt of the stock pressed to the shoulder.
I think just as important is cast, to keep your eyes level and not have to bend your neck.
Me either but browing does't have it.
Is it ok to second shot?
I'm a small lady at 5'3", my first gun is a little Nikko 812, she's small and light and from the first time I shot with her my coach said she was tte right gun for me. Most gun fitters would say it's a bit too small for me but I shoot much better with my hands closer to my body.

When I bought my Beretta DT10EELL from a Gunshop with a shooting ground down I Wells, I shot 46 out of 50, I’m confident it fits.
Good review of fit size thx!!
Another golden video for the people new to shooting! solid advice. Great content.

Awesome, great video!
I shoot a Beretta 691 Vittoria. A ladies gun by design but it fits me like it was made for me. When I miss I know its me and not the gun or cartridge.
I think the different types of action can fit different people, Berettas fit me but the 525 & mirokus dont, although the 725 does!

Is this the same for side by sides? 3 fingers away from the comb.

Would the same apply to a s/s?

Maybe you are rolling your head over and not staying level.

Thanks for your comment if you would like to give they a call on 01844 238 308 they will help you thanks TSC team
What about if you are right handed and left eye dominant?
Thanks for your comment and a great comment if you would like to email contactus@theshootingchannel.co.uk we can try and help you with this. Thanks TSC Team.
You either shoot with your « wrong » eye or uour « wrong » hand,i personaly learned the later and shoot like a lefty
Just close your left eye, easiest and cheapest.

Great video, please move to the US and open a school

@@clivenewton7609 * Absolutely agree.
Should your eyes be horizontal when mounting the gun? If they are not what is the cause?
Not enough cast either off or on.
Thanks for your comment and a great comment if you give us an email at contactus@theshootingchannel.co.uk we can help you with this. Thanks TSC Team
One leg shorter than the other or cast.
Small guys are not weak. 250lbd and 60 over weight with a 48 inch waist does Not make you strong guys!!! Your caught up in your fantasy
