A cogent and detailed conversation on gun fit that goes beyond just numbers. It’s good to see the recognition of weight and balance as key aspects of the experience along with the understanding that the measurements are not absolute. Comments on gun speed and how it is effected by weight and balance were dead on. This was a great nuts and bolts video. BTW, as an American, I can attest that we do love to adjust everything. If it has a screw we’ll turn it.
Beeing a professional gunfitter in Germany I would like to add a few informations that i feel could have been discussed: - your gunmount is very deep in your shoulder the result is that you pull your right shoulder up excessively to meet the cheek while your face is bend so far down that you look along or far above your barrels like a snooker or Pool billard player. Your vision is far worse with your eyeballs stretched to the max with line of sight passing your eyebrows. Your uneven shoulder tension is at least a disadvantage in swinging right to left or left to right as the effort is not similar. Also the amount of shoulder lifting influences your accuracy in sight picture an its just an unnessessary extra variable in a game that has so many variables allready I found it remarkable that you seem to lock your elbow down each time just before the shot breaks almost as if one could mount a trigger mechanism on your right elbow. What is the advantage your are seeing in this extra movement? Is there any i can’t see? In your very professional videos i have also seen you headlifting between shots. This could have been discussed I would like to suggest that you stand straight in front of a mirror or find someone that helps you take some body measurements. You are exceptionally tall and you have a long neck plus you have a long shaped face These three variables all ad up to your Eye pupil beeing far higher above the center of xour shoulder joint(ball) Average for an European male is arround 210mm. Looking at your statue i guess ist closer to 250mm in your case. A Montecarlo stock helps you to shorten the distance you need to bend down on the cheek of the stock which impairs your vision. Also grip angle and length was discussed but touched only the surface. Sling your hand too high locks your wrist and results in a too low gunmount that requires shoulder lifting and exessive head bending that results in 2nd best vision at best
I had a gun fit with Matt and he was so good. I had a preconceived idea of what was right for me but with Matts support and guidance the final gun choice was surprising. I will wholeheartedly recommend Matt Davis @ The GunFit Company for both gun fit and coaching. Great guy.
Another good vid mate I really enjoyed that very educational I'm a great gun swapper one week the sxs next week the semi I do keep on telling myself my shooting would improve if I stuck to one gun and learnt to operate it correctly lol
Very interesting & I also noticed that you drop your right elbow from when you mount to when you commit to the shot which I presume is also a factor in the equation?
I've been watching you mount guns for some time now and always wondered whether you had ever been fitted properly. But, obviously, you are an excellent shot and have been able to force your body to accommodate a variety of stock dimensions. Making changes that would place the butt of the stock in your deltopectoral groove, where I think it belongs to lessen your clutching of the gun and pounding of your cheek, might alter your whole stance too much. The Monte Carlo was a sort of compromise but it certainly seemed to help. All fun but far too brief a discussion of stock fitting.
I watched this video because I am curious what your LOP is. I am not as tall or as thin as you but was fitted in the spring and was told my LOP should be 16 1/4 inches. I was surprised at that number as I have never seen anything for sale over 15 1/2. This put the brakes on my dream shotgun as maybe I need to go custom, at least for one gun.
Great video, thanks guys ! The dark art of gun fit .... At 50+ years old, over the the past couple of years I have acquired both a 725 Prosport and a ruptured thoracic disc. A combination of adjustable comb and adjustable butt pad has been both essential and an epiphany - Monte Carlo all the way for me these days. Scores are getting back up there too 👍
Cyril Brewster - he takes new and young clients (kids from the age of 12) then sends them of for a full custom stock , not taking into consideration that they are daily changing! What I got from this, if it's comfortable it fits
Guys.....your speech cadence is like you've been drinking redbull all morning. The information is excellent, no doubt, but being from the states, I'm having trouble unscrambling the message. Thanks.
Gun fit is such a marginal thing, for instance your cheek pressure is never going to be 100% exact shot to shot, you are moving and pressing as you shoot so even a "perfect" fit chnages, if you can mount it to a good sight picture set and forget, ps love the hull vest jonny don't fancy sending me one in oz do you??? Haha
Hi Johnny. On an unrelated topic I would welcome your view on a VERY Interesting gun. A Cogswell and Harrison millennium No 2. A side by side English made side lock ejector with fixed open chokes and 2 3/4 chambers and all for a reasonable price. Please check them out as it is a unique proposition in 2023.... I think anyway. 😮
This was an interesting video but not very relevant to the average shooter. I doubt two out of a hundred shotgunners will ever get a gun fitting, as it is nearly as expensive as buying a shotgun. Most of us go into a gun store, hopefully after doing some research on the shotguns we are interested in. Some guidance from a professional fitter on how to choose a shotgun that "feels right" would be appreciated. Then, since we now own the gun, guidance on how to do easy mods to the gun or adaptations to our technique would be helpful. Sure, it would be nice to have a fitting and then have a custom stock made to fit, but that will never happen for most of us. No, most of us will never reach the perfection of the best shooters, but I am sure we could all improve with some help.
Matt is the nicest guy, We had I had a gun fit back in June with him and the measurements were sent straight to Manuel Ricardo who is now currently making the stock for me. If i'm not AA by June next year i'm blaming Matt 😁😁😁(not really)
As a poor, short, fat, american I had no idea about gun fit till recently 2 years ago, I have been making do with guns that were too long for me for years. But after finding a gun that I was not afraid to alter and make to fit me, the birds seem to be hard to miss now. Dont shoot many clays, but the pheasant in the pies, and woodcock in the pan lately have been delicious.
Why is it, that when ever i see these shooting videos. They always have the Gun mounted, when they Call, pull?? Thats a absolut no no, in Denmark. And its not hunting related. So idont think that this, Will ever give you. The Right mounting picture🤷♂️
Why... 🤦🤦🤦 What a melt thing to say.. If they both know there no shells in it who gives a F... Its a wood and metal stick the most undangerous thing in the world till you stick a cartridge in it... Grow up
I would like to know the difference of the try stock measurements compared to your other guns measurements.

Matt is one of the smartest and nicest people in shooting. He knows what he talking about!
@5_star_stays You know him personally i take it?
@@1valg I do and I can't recommend him highly enough
Matt is a top man , have had a gun fit and coaching from him for,the last 6 months with great improvements. Can recommend highly

Would you consider doing another video comparing the try-gun measurements to the GTI, the Miroku, and the Longthorne?
I’d love to know how your new fit compares to your MK38 Ricardo ‘online’ custom stock?
Would love to know how your longhorn which was fine tuned when you got it compared to the try gun settings

Watching all your videos really makes me want to buy a shotkam looks like a bit of saving up but they do look like a wicked bit of kit
That was fun and well done. I think a learning experience everyone should attend.
My friend has a shot cam, we weighed it yesterday and it was over 6 ounces, this really alters the balance/feel when it is on his gun.
Fantastic to see.
The gun fitter shoots lefthanded!
That's my gun fitter!
What's his contact?

September 1, opening day of dove season in Texas. 102° F. (39° C). Plenty hot.

Come on Johnny let us know the numbers, would be really interesting to know how much you had to change each of your other guns.

I was recently fitted and my length of pull is 16 5/8" and with that in my head now it's even more obvious than before that none of my guns fit!
Jesus. Do your knuckles drag when you walk 😊
Great video, thanks guys !

What were the differences?
Great video jonny. Keep it up 👌
Would be good to see a bit of point of impact in relation to gun fit
Could I ask did you change choke tubes between traps at all
not this time out

Excellent video.
It make you think when they talk about gun balance and extended chokes can affect this yet it’s ok to hang a camera of the bottom barrel
I’ve never had a gun fit just shot guns I inherited and never had many issues
What happened to the Longthorne ? I thought it was a custom stocked gun that fit you.
Today is the last day, 11pm eastern time for the quail quota hunt raffle tickets. Just a FYI
a cliffhanger!

This must mean a third stock . Have you asked Jim yet?
Is this Ed Solomons from 2003?
You never see Matt and Ed in the same room at the same time :)
If it goes bang it fits!

Jonny, if you'd just quit growing...
this video should be about 10-12 minutes. Too much detailed talking that goes in one ear and out other.
Just watch it at 2x speed 👌🏻

Exactly, took the words from my mouth!
@@henrikjohansen7324 we don't see much "gun up"in the field....!!
@@henrikjohansen7324 you can mould yourself to a poorly fitting gun by pre mounting it and make do...this is the point in question
Because in England, where this is filmed and under both UK and World sporting clay rules, you can.
Long video to learn nothing.
I cringed when I saw the finger was on the trigger and the fitter was looking down the barrel for J's eye position.

You're right. Let's just throw all firearm safety rules out the window when you're buddy is looking down your barrel. @@dangriffiths4009
Why? Whats the point of going to all that effort of fitting a shotgun if you're not holding it exactly as you would when you're shooting the thing?
