I see it as the first option given how the staff behind these shows are so large and rotating that it’s impossible to get a
“hive mind” consensus out of them.
Collectively it IS overall just a job tho, a job they’re likely passionate for, but still a job nonetheless.
A lot of the board artists, actors, writers, sound engineers etc work on multiple and sometimes the same shows so often and generally spend so much time around and with each other that it’s hard to believe they truly got a ‘Spy Vs Spy’ thing goin on
As an artist/aspiring animator myself, we literally don’t got the time bruh

I think it’s adult animation creators who understand the process/pitfalls, and pointing it out. It’s not a mark against the show more or less playful ribbing of other shows. They also have a unique perspective when viewing other shows, and knowing that their audience also likes the other show.

My problem is that Family Guy (at least its writers) seems a little bitter about its competition. Let's not forget the "joke" (that was censored off the American broadcast) where Quagmire literally onscreen rapes Marge Simpson, and then proceeds to off screen kill the entire Simpsons family. There's throwing shade at a series, but that was just bitter, angry, and juvenile.

I kinda hate that Family Guy now has a rep for being callous or mean spirited now when the creator is the furthest thing from that, and that's not how the series started out. All because some weirdo in the writing staff seems to just be like a hateful bitter piece of shit idk man.

Just...that one time was just inexcusable. Luckily it was a one time thing.
That said, I liked The Simpsons' jab at Bojack Horseman better. Marge refuses Homer to watch the next episode of a Stranger Things expy, and appears as Bojack on the TV saying Homer can watch that, only for Homer to say "NO! Too depressing!"

I like all the shows in this video for different reasons. South Park is great at commenting on social issues with witty stories. Family Guy has some hilariously absurd situational comedy. Bob's Burgers is heartwarming and focuses on the interpersonal relationships between the family members. Bojack is a fantastic look at the aftermath of Hollywood fame that is both very well written with jokes that absolutely break me with laughter and sad moments that will bring a tear to my eye, often in the same episode. Sure each show could try to be just like South Park, but the other shows aren't South Park and would end up just being worse South Park instead of their own thing that people like for different reasons.

It takes a certain kind of creative to do something like the Conway Twitty gag, because it takes away so much time from a 22-24 minute show, and I think Doc Hammer and Jackson Public both saw that as their own personal weakness (since they're so focused on quick paced, super story heavy work), and something worthy of envy to a degree.

I grew up watching both shows as a kid. I’ve always preferred South Park over the two. Family guy I thought the older episodes were fantastic. One thing Seth macfarlane and trey and Matt have in common is their both very musically talented as seen in both shows. Also stating the obvious both shows have always got a lot of backlash and controversy since they started. Other then that they’re style of comedy is very different. I’ve always respected their fight for freedom of speech both creators are very passionate about that which I always respected. The PTV episode of family which is one of the best episodes ever is basically the equivalent and South Park bigger longer uncut cause they’re both a giant middle finger to censor and make both series what they are. Family guy has definitely gone down hill over the years and that’s because Seth macfarlane hasn’t written the show in ages. He just does the voices. The characters just became very mean spirited and unlikable. That show still has a place in my heart with the older episodes and one of my favorite shows. South Park is still funny and enjoyable after 26 seasons. Some episodes are better then others. In fact after the movie the show got better and better. I still miss chef (Isaac Hayes) and the original voice for Wendy, Kyle’s mom, cartmans mom, other female characters (Mary Kay berg) rip. When I started watching South Park I mostly watched the early pre movie seasons and the movie, even though I was born in 98 and South Park was on for years. Those episodes are very special to me. But as I said South Park got better after the movie. The movie definitely made me fall in love with South Park and is still to this day my all time favorite show.

5:45 Family guy's gag style writing extends within the main episode plots (not just the cutaways) and they can often derailed and undercut the story.
Like the transgender Peter episode has a moment of plot based character driven moment when Quagmire's Dad (as the show usually refers to them) tells Peter that "faking being trans is wrong" in a sincere moment - for the scene to end with Meg coming into the bar post committing murder. There's an episode specific ongoing gag of Meg being a serial killer, and having her show up at a specifically LGBT bar of all places, uncomfortably places the two topics next to other; leaving room for misinterpretation that the writer is saying the two groups have a connection (connections that are bigoted to make).
Also: In Family Guy A plots and B plots rarely come together and the "inciting incident hijinks" are more of a micro episode, establishing the main conflict and rarely coming back to play for a "full circle" moment. Curb Your Enthusiasm is a good example of a show that does both those things well in most episodes.

@@nickrustyson8124 re-occuring bits can be funny, but has proven to muddle the message/intent.
as far as cross episode canon for family guy, you can't put too much stock in "everything is canon" cause in that case the show falls apart.
Quagmire's dad should never be a representative for sincere views of LGBT issues if you see Family Guy having a constant cohesive continuity, given there's a one off shock gag where her bangs her. See other characters as vehicles to tell jokes however, you can overlook viel things and just go with the moment (as long as the moment doesn't immediately get undercut or contradicted).
Family Guy works great as "funny moments" better than really any other adult animated comedy - but as something you gets truely personally invested in; the show betrays itself and characters so much it's nearly impossible.
It's diffrent than SouthPark's "nothing is sacrade" approach mind you, given the later never shys away from character's horrific actions and it went in with the approach - character's never got "ruined" cause they always were off the perc from day one. Cartman vs Scott Ternermin is perfect example, it was in the show's nature, it was on brand for the characters and it never brushed the moment under the rug and is like "that definitely happened."
End of day, two widely diffrent styles - but my core point is the styles are even more diffrent than OG vid claims lol.

I just want to say I agree with you. I also like both. I think both shows have had their ups and downs, and while I prefer South Park it really comes down to what I enjoyed watching more when I was growing up. I was watching both of these shows when I was way to young to be watching either of them, so most of it boils down to what little me thought was more funny back in the day, and South Park won the battle with my sense of humor. Though that being said, looking back on it over the years as an adult I think South Park had the most consistency with its quality. Family guy dipped in quality hard after 7-8 seasons, and it hasn't even started picking back up until the most recent 2-3 seasons. Like I fully admit, allot of seasons 10-16 I have barely watched, Family guy just didn't hold me. Meanwhile, South Park really didn't start to stuble till around season 18-19. And while admittedly when South Park fell it fell far and hard, but I honestly think its bounced back of it really quickly. Like theres no doubt season 20 was the year South Park "died." the whole Garrison/Trump story just kinda fell flat. And like personally I think season 21 is even worse. I almost stopped watching the show that season. Its like they tried to go back to basics after the serialized stories failed, but like Matt and Trey just didn't have their heart in it and every episode was so bland. But like immediately after that in season 22-23 there are quite a few episodes I like, and like I honestly think the Covid specials are some of my favorite south park content ever created. They are great!
But regardless, I'm very happy that here in 2023 I can finally say that I really enjoyed both the new Season of South Park AND The new Season of Family Guy. Both shows did a good job this year!

But I agree season 19-23 are probably the weakest seasons I only liked about 4 episodes in those 5 seasons and had to force myself to pay attention to the rest. I think the fact they tried serialized storylines and focused more on the adults is why those seasons were the weakest but I’m glad after the Covid special they seem get better in quality

Idk, I like both shows a lot, but I do think South Park is more well put together overall. I do generally agree with Matt and Trey's points, they definitely know what they're talking about in that regard, but I feel it moreso applies to the later seasons of the show where it became way more gag-focused. They're right in that having a show just be a laugh machine and nothing more, while very fun, just isn't sustainable for a long-running series, and I think they've more than proven that point in how their other show managed to keep itself just as fresh and entertaining as it was 20 years in because they put more focus into the character writing.

Also, "They're right in that having a show just be a laugh machine and nothing more, while very fun, just isn't sustainable for a long-running series", What show are you talking about because, While not always hitting well, Family guy HAS made Deeper episodes, Just a shame you're too Shallow and Pretentious to understand them. Just because those episode contain jokes doesn't erase Deeper messages within them. "and I think they've more than proven that point in how their other show managed to keep itself just as fresh and entertaining as it was 20 years in because they put more focus into the character writing." What other show? As far as I'm aware, they only made southpark, and as the Simpsons has shown, Once you've been around long enough and gotten big enough It's really hard for big companies to throw-away a brand recognized show that rakes in money hand over fist so them being around 20 years means Jack-All. Your points are faulty and you've said nothing of substance.

@@silvertriforce2574 Okay really don't appreciate the sass here, and first off holy shit have you approached everything I've said in completely bad faith.
First off just because a show is still on doesn't mean it's operating in its peak form, like... at all. Like the Simpsons have been running for over 30 years, but its respect and general reputation is a far, far cry from what it was in the 90's. Like if you want proof just think of how many people give a fuck about any other season of the show outside of 1-10. It's not just me or anyone saying it ain't good anymore, just look at the reputation on a broader scope. It went from a cornerstone of our culture to something that only comes up in passing mention.
Also yes I have seen the good episodes from the later seasons of Family Guy, yes they are decent episodes, but they are often outliers from what the show is generally like at that point.
Flanderization exists primarily in status quo shows for a reason. When you refuse to evolve your characters or setting in any meaningful way as a sitcom writer you often have to keep topping yourself on putting your characters in increasingly outlandish situations and lean harder into their pre-established comedic quirks. It's something that very much happened with Family Guy around seasons 6-10 (not speaking for recent seasons, haven't seen much of em so I just can't speak on what their quality's like), where because it's reliant on gag humor and often forgoes character writing for the sake of getting a bigger laugh it had to keep making its stories and characters more and more outlandish to keep itself surprising, but when you aren't grounding your story and just keep ramping up the antics of your characters things stop being shocking. Comedy is only as effective or transgressive when it's grounded in some base of character conflict or narrative, otherwise it's just noise. It's what Matt and Trey are expressing when venting about their frustrations working with "gag writers".
And as Tariq said, both styles can be enjoyed, and have an equal right to exist. However, Matt and Trey *do* have a point in what they're saying. I know that as a screenwriter myself, regardless of how you feel about South Park they know what they're talking about, and I think if you'd stop whining about them being "pretentious" and actually listened to what they have to say about comedic story structure you'd really get something great out of it. Their "but/therefore" method is truly instrumental for novice writers of any medium, and what first got me to start improving my craft as a writer.

@@silvertriforce2574 Also not just me stroking the ego of Matt and Trey, Seth himself also has some enriching things to say about writing a comedy. I'll always remember his response to South Park showing Muhammed, and I think points out a flaw in their "anything and everything should be mocked" mindset. I really liked his more mature and nuanced take on the subject, effectively saying that you have to weigh if a joke is genuinely funny enough to be worth causing potential harm to yourself and others, and I think you see that a lot in how he ran the earlier seasons of Family Guy before drifting away from the series to work on other projects.

I stopped liking Fmaily Guy after 2010-2011. I noticed a huge shift in tone for the show that I didn't like. I felt this way for years. I watched Lydia's video a few months ago about Brian and how he changed. She mentioned Seth hadn't written for the show since 2010. I never knew that for 13 years. Pure coincidence
