My dad was the greatest! Did you know he was on actually two game shows. He was on Hollywood Squares as well and won a car and everything! He won a Datsun B210 hatchback. The constellation prizes are also no joke. I remember crates of Sue Bee Honey being delivered to us for a whole year. I just started back enjoying the taste of honey and that was 46 years ago!🤣
H/H match update: ... ~~~Today's action: Wow, this is the third day in a row that Richard's answer has sent a reigning champion packing. This departing champion had won one game and $2,850. *Today's audience match question: "Mustard________"* (My thoughts: Stain, Seed, Greens) The celebs: Charles (Plaster), Brett (Sauce), Richard (Seed) The choice: Seed The answers: Greens, Plaster, Seed - Kudos to Richard for coming up with the top answer in third position! And now we come to the segment of the show I like to call "Match Richard Dawson" because he all but owns this part of the game. And today is no exception. This makes King Richard's 11th consecutive head-to-head question, and he's played 44 of the past 46 times. (It's also fair to note that he's on a super hot streak, having matched seven of his last eight attempts, and he's hot on Brett's heels as far as overall accuracy!) Stats: Richard has matched 109 of his 250 most recent attempts (43.6%), 48 of his last 110 attempts (43.6%), and 29 of his last 66 attempts (43.9%). His overall success rate is *42.2%* and this is his 728th attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: Betty has matched 19 of her 38 attempts (50.0%), Charles has matched 33 of his 69 attempts (47.8%), Brett has matched 30 of her 71 attempts (42.3%), and Richard has matched 307 of his 727 attempts (42.2%). Nipsey has answered eight questions without yet matching, and Patty Duke Astin has answered two without yet matching. *Today's H/H question: "________Friend"* (Perhaps the most obvious answer is boy/girl, but how do you decide which to say? Best friend? Old friend? Thank you for being a...? I'll say "girl"friend since that feels like something Richard would say.) Richard has an immediate thought and doesn't take long to scribble it down and then file his (potentially) $5,000 answer. It doesn't look like a long word, but that clue doesn't rule out much. Our champion surprises me by saying "Lost" friend. I've never really heard of this particular collocation, and it appears neither has the audience, based on their negative response. I honestly doubt Richard wrote "Lost," but anything's possible... Another mild surprise. Richard wrote "Best" - I guess that was my alternate answer after boy/girl, so not too surprising, I guess... No H/H match today. ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). Fannie - 48.3% (14 wins in 29 attempts). Charles - 47.8% (33 wins in 69 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 42.3% (30 wins in 71 attempts). Richard - 42.2% (307 wins in 728 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1084, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
You notice that Patty and Betty's mics are 'hot' or active while the game goes on and you can hear them muttering things like answers or commentary about contestants answers. At 5:45 you can hear Betty saying 'seed...seed' to Richard. "Unless you got a better one". Later at 7:55 when the contestant says 'Lost' friend Patty mutters 'that's a strange answer'. There's more if you can make it out. Good thing they didn't say anything really awful.
I don't remember Match Game ever being on at 10 AM in Chicago. Ever since I was a toddler in the early 1980s, it's always been The Price is Right at 10 AM.
CBS moved the show multiple times in one year which caused the ratings to crater. One a few shows where Bob Barker was a panelist they discuss the move. MG would be the lead in for the Price is Right. One was going to be on at 11 eastern time, the other show would be on at 11:30.
It tanked the ratings to the point where "Family Feud" became number one, thus setting another cog in motion for Richard's departure. The classic days of MG are numbered from that point.
1977 was a TAD too early for "Dr. Kevorkian" as a response for the first question about the woman who thought her husband didn't want her to get better and sent her to Doctor BLANK...
@@randydellinger2996 Not always, if fans are running which they are it can go down the bottom where Betty and others are sitting. I know this because my ex husband smoked!!
Listening close, someone (either Patty or Betty) says "seed" too close to the microphone in response to the "Mustard" question. It happens around the 05:47 mark, far before Richard says it. Weird.
The move to 11am was a disaster move for Match Game. It lost it young viewers who use to watch them after school. I know I was one of them. I could no longer watch MG as I was in school at 11am. When they finally realized their mistake and moved the show back, the show ratings never recovered.
I love just watching my dad when I miss him. God rest his soul. This is such a blessing!
Sorry for your loss Heather. It always warms my heart to see the children of the contestants post in these feeds.

That's a great story Heather, thanks for sharing! Did you father ever explain why he went with "Lost" Friend for the super match answer?
I was watching this episode today, seems like a great guy and wandered what ever happened to his daughters.....wow
Thanks for uploading these... great entertainment and brings back so many childhood memories

"Not bad!"
This show was before I was even born an I love it

I thought their mics were always on.
I never noticed

8:40 Didn't the 11 AM time change almost kill MG?
Not almost IT DID!!!!
James Bonnen It continued on until 1982, so “Almost” is probably a lot closer to the truth.

Mustard seed or gas
that plus the stupid wheel and firing Richard put the final nail in the coffin
Considering the Vietnam War was several years prior, I suppose "mustard gas" would have been censored.
Yes. Just 2 years prior and plenty of killing still happening in 77, according to my Vietnamese friends who eventually fled.
@@noampitlik2332 If I remember my world history correctly: once US soldiers were evacuated, the VC fighting bled into Cambodia.
@@Floymin Yes. And Laos and Thailand, where the rest of my refugee buddies from my youth came from.
Mustard gas was used by the Germans in WWI. No mustard gas was used in Vietnam .Agent Orange was used as a defoliant and was a deadly chemical.
12:37 poor betty 😂
1977 was a TAD too early for "Dr. Kevorkian" as a response for the first question about the woman who thought her husband didn't want her to get better and sent her to Doctor BLANK...
I recalled Patty Duke as rather generically cute; in fact, she was gorgeous. I'm not keen on the glasses, though.
Indeed. Barbara Billingsley always turned me on. And I think she was almost 50 on Leave it to Beaver.
@noampitlik2332 She was 41yo when that show began, and 47yo when it concluded. And yes, a very attractive woman.
Finally, an episode I can actually watch!!!!
The video quality is pretty good here.
❓
Queen Juliana of the Netherlands lived to age 95.
She still was a Queen at that time. In 1980 her daughter Beatrix became Queen. From this day Juliana was a Princess. She died in 2004.
Betty sneezing is from your cigar smoking, Charles
Cigar smoke goes up, not down.

Maybe some of the loose tobacco fell onto her.
Charles smokes a pipe, not a cigar

In the end credits it says Playboy Press was a promotional company. Wonder what they provided.
@pencils812 One would imagine, the magazine. Maybe Bill got a subscription... haha.
sometimes Gene is a doofus
Especially when he’s around an attractive woman.
Not so much.

Charles isn't a Damn bit funny. What he was saying to Betty White
You spelled Charles is funny wrong
Also Charles was having fun with Betty because she was laughing at his joke
