I love how Reptile eats the head first and you hear a scream. He then proceeds to eat the torso, you hear a scream. Finally, finishes eating the waist area and, guess what? You hear a scream.

This might be the golden age of fatalities. They were fun, bizarre, and the limited animation of the day made them so much more unique.
Bizarre and fun (as in comedy) definitely. But imo this was a step down in fatalities quality overall compared to MK2. Even MK1 had dedicated sprites for fatalities for all characters.
@@dude18222hate how the "decapitated" sprites (besides the same copy paste parts) dont even rotate. see: MK1 johnny cage fatality. every severed limb has zero rotation and most times barely any blood.
notice how the "blood geyser" animation is used liberally and lazily
a lot of them are really bad, but theres some good ones. just wish some of them werent so lazy with the sprites.
@@TVindustries5000 I remember reading back in the day that the classic subzero decapitation fatality on UMK3 and Trilogy was censored due to its "high violence" hahaha yeah right, there were no head + spine sprites for the characters + falling bodies, just like Johnny Cage in Trilogy didn't have a punch-in-the-crotch attack just because there were no dedicated sprites for any character to assume that position. That's how lazy they were and that's why I feel it was a step down from MK1 and MK2. I mean they were just too lazy to reassign Scorpion a scorpion animality just because Sheeva had it in the original MK3.
@@TVindustries5000 it's about memory capacity. They literally didn't have room for even more sprites for every single character just for the fatalities. They had to make do with enormous limitations.

I like the amount of detail that went into the Nightwolf character. So unique and badass.
Some of the backdrops (growling trees in the forest, floating priest) are really stunning and add to the dark atmosphere.
I thought the same of Twisted Metal 2

One of the best looking and it doesn't involve filling the screen with millions of exploding bones.

You gotta love how the head keeps screaming even after its been punched or lopped off. And you gotta love how there’s always like three arms and three legs. Plus, the fatality recipient keeps screaming after exploding or being chopped into pieces.

Well, a human head can live for about 15 seconds after it has been chopped off, as for the 3 legs bones 7 skulls and 4 arm bones, uhhh mortal kombat stuff i guess.

I don't think Midway thought that deeply about this at the time, but your take is interesting... but now I can only see Noob trying to open a second portal and failing several times lol
@redacted2275 Well I come to this conclusion thinking, Midway may have actually WANTED to do that at the time but, were extremely limited with what they could do with the graphic engines they were working with for MK3 back then. I mean if they COULD do more with what they were working with at the time 12:15 probably could have been designed to make a lot more sense, to be honest... 🙂🫴
I love how simple yet over the top these fatalities are. I’ve always liked the ones of the modern games that are simple in concept but crazy in execution.

@@BryonYoungblood Exactly. Personally, I’m a fan of the simple but executed well. Johnny Cages Little Improv from MKX, Sub-Zeros Bed of Ice from MKX, Kano’s dance break in MK11, all simple but great.

As an aspiring game designer, I see these fatalities as very well-executed despite technical limitiations of this period, with very clever tricks used to scale across large roster of fighters.
True, but it is weird that it has less technical features than MK2, such as bodies falling forward or just falling after death.
Lol bro it’s the opposite, they were to lazy to change character animations that’s why people stay standing when decapitated or are still in the position of falling when impaled on jades fatality. This is pure laziness. Keep “aspiring” lol

@milan10 knows best It's the spinerip it was censored as a reference to the original spinerip creating the ESRB rating and putting Mortal Kombat on the map.

It could also mean the other way around: Sub Zero tore out Scorpions eyes which is why the screen went black meaning blindness.

I always loved Baraka's fatality and it's still my favourite MK finisher of all time. Compared to so many other ones that turn the opponent into a spray of red water and eight skeletons, his spike impalement is just so sadistic. They really managed to make a brutal death without resorting to cheesy dismemberment. Most other MK fatalities feel like you could just cut to the end title card of The Itchy and Scratchy Show and nobody would find it weird, but Baraka's was the one to make me go "oh wow no, that's actually horrible."
In MK2 the opponent it lasts longer because the victim is still moving a bit before they move down his arm blades. That's more dramatic and highlights just how torturous this Fatality is. I'm not a fan of it but it sends a message.

They borked it in this version, in mk2 as the enemy slides down the blades, there is dramatic tune.... in this version its just stops
There's also other variants to Blade Lift, like one in Shaolin Monks where Baraka KICKS his opponent's body off his blades, splitting them open as he snarls.
I love all the glitches from the CD-ROM versions of the game, it’s makes the game full of broken AI and gameplay feel much more chaotic and fun. Like when the music doesn’t start for the fatalities, the characters moving after performing their fatalities, delays in sound bytes and animations.

@@clspectre9055 I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to find some voice actors that could sound like the announcer. Plus you could copy a lot of the sounds. Like the teleport sound, the uppercut, the screams, and etc.
Love how the voice sound effects kind of cuts into itself during a multiple combo really love this game for that so funny especially Lou character which I thought was so exaggerative but that's what makes this game so great and so classic is how funny it is on top of how violent it also is Not only were they able to shock you with the fatalities they were able to make you laugh hysterically while it was happening

Truth be told, Sub-Zero's fatality garnered so much attention for how graphic it was back in the day(reasonably so) that, it lead to formation of the ESRB game rating system in The U.S.
Back then, Midway & Acclaim were so "Really guys???🤨" about how the politicians & lawyers were reacting to it that, it's why Friendships were added in MK2, Friendships returned in MK3, Babalities were added in MK3 and, THIS fatality was turned into "Fade to Black"...

The exploding bodies were done to death.
It was a cheap and lazy way to make the game seem bloodier than it was. Hell, some of the exploding body fatalities don’t even have blood, just bones. We were all duped, in a way. The gore in MK2 was much better and more detailed.

@@Rountree1985 MKII is IMO the best game in the series. Although it's hard to beat Becky Gable as Kitana/Mileena/Jade in 3 Ultimate. Holy god she was hot (and Kerri Hoskins as Sonya, too).

To be honest, it is somewhat of a low point. Some still look pretty good, but the rest are really the same thing, hundred bones, some legs and a skull. MK1 did better in the gore area.

They didn't add that fatality in this MK. It only appears on UMK3

Because this version of MKT is disk-based and would probably require awkward loading time to change the stage and load all the Scorpion sprites.
Buzz-Duh the Scorpion sprites are the same ones used during the fight. But yeah changing the background would have been a long loading time :/

I loved the stages in mk1-3 they did such a good job with them

When I was a kid I though Fatality was just an epic sounding word that MK made up to sound cool, it blew my mind when I found out it was a real word
I became obsessed with Mortal Kombat when I played it at the arcade, seeing a Fatality was life changing. I actually asked my grandma what it meant and she told me it was when someone died. Probably a huge part of why i'm fucked up lmao
I do miss those old school moments with this game in a game bar and the sound is still badass like it used to be.
