  • In Taiji, Japan, the dolphin hunting industry has shifted from killing dolphins for their meat to a more lucrative, but equally controversial industry-the capture of live animals for overseas "dolphin shows."
In this video, VICE World News travels to the town made infamous in the Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove” with Ren Yabuki, the director of Life Investigation Agency, a Japanese animal rights NGO and the only group tasked with monitoring this year’s dolphin hunts.

Things like cows, pigs and chickens and other livestock were domesticated over potentially dozens of generations over hundred- thousands of years of study and breeding. Unlike dolphins we have the techniques and data to prove cause and effect of our lifestyle choices should you choose to eat these kinds of meat.
Donkey, and horses could also be harvested as a food source but generally aren’t as those were more to assist in difficult manual labor and transportation.
And cats and dogs were more domesticated for companionship, status and aids in religion or hunting.

Also here are the other reasons ( apart from the fact we farm cows, they are actually very aware creatures too - they love touch, music and are more intelligent than we realised - but not like cetaceans)
      1. Their meat is highly toxic from all the pollutants we have dumped in the sea.
      2. 90% of large fish stocks are gone. If we don't stop taking so much from the oceans they will be devoid of life within 30-50 years. Dolphins and whales (and sharks) - which maintain ecosystems as apex predators are subject to pollution, bycatch, entrapment in fishing gear, boat strikes and heavy metal toxicity, loss of habitat and lack of food sources.(pollution/overfishing)
      3. Another MASSIVE reason not to take them - we don't farm them like domestic stock to ensure massive supply - further we can't they do not do well in captivity BECAUSE of their intelligence and habitats. Humans (as an aside) are actually not designed to eat large amounts of meat ( shown in 500+ research ) - hence cooking and flavouring etc
      4. This is all due to $$$ from cruel captivity and they just kill rejects- so destructive to creatures that have a third lobe to their brains that gives them a better social sense and relationship awareness/compassion than humans have - a major reason to leave them alone.
Eventually, we will be able to communicate with them and realise what a massive crime we have committed. That's if any are left.🐬

This is already a mandatory law in several western countries like Australia, Switzerland, Norway and New Zealand.~
    ~
As you might expect, a huge body of literature demonstrates that animals feel pain at the moment of slaughter and evidence suggests that it can take up to 14 seconds for sheep to become insensible following the severing of the carotid arteries. For cattle, it can take up to 85 seconds. To do that to an animal that is fully conscious is unspeakably cruel.

Since your emphasis is on "removing pain from the equation". And not on "doing non consensual things to other, experiencing minds". Also, if you do have a theory on why humans are exempt from being on the menu (aka treated like things that become your treat), why they are a cut apart (hehe), I'd love to know about it.

For thousands of years, Arctic people have depended on whale meat. In Alaska now, the meat is harvested from legal, non-commercial hunts that occur twice a year in the spring and autumn. The meat is stored and eaten throughout the winter. Coastal Alaska Natives divided their catch into 10 sections. The fatty tail, considered to be the best part, went to the captain of the conquering vessel, while the less-desired sections were given to his crew and others that assisted with the kill. The skin and blubber (muktuk) taken from the bowfin, beluga, or narwhal is also valued, and is eaten raw or cooked.

The truth is you are correct that the native Alaskan is allowed a exception. Do you know why? Because the people that are indigenous to that area above the arctic circle suffer from a vitamin D deficiency and can die without a source. There is one settlement that is allowed one whale per year. They don't feast, they make jersey from the meat, and preserve the blubber for use year round. There aren't any grocery stores that far up in the wild, so they have to make what they have last. The whale that is harvested that year is prayed over and thanked for its sacrifice. I would say that death is death, and if you killed me I wouldn't give 2 shits if you thanked me or prayed over my body, but if I were a whale and I had to choose where to die, I would rather pick the more peaceful setting. They know what's going on when they see their family and friends murdered before their eyes, that must be a terrible way to go.

Cows were domesticated over hundred of years though. Japan has its own specialized breed of cow that makes up for one of the most expensive beef types in the world, Kobe beef. Japan didn’t start exporting its own cows out into international markets for breeding or consumption until 2012. Its more with newer generations in Japan they want more stable or sustainable forms of proteins and amino acids.
Norway and Korea also have declines in dolphin hunting as well for similar reasons.
Most average everyday animal rights activists are indeed vegetarian or vegan so they consume no livestock.
Over the last 10 years, imports of avocados from Mexico or Peru has actually been an excellent substitute for omega 3, and other amino acids so things are changing drastically.

I understand your POV, but as soon as you get into using "more/less intelligent" as a metric/grading system for what to kill for food (not survival) and what to spare, you land on a morally slippery slope. A "person" is just a story you've come to believe, but there is nothing unique to humanity which makes them "exempt from being eaten".
There are "persons" who (for whatever reason) are less intelligent than the average Dolphin, Pig, Cow, Dog, etc., taking that logic a bit further, from your POV, it would be moral to eat the mentally handicapped person.
Intelligence is a bad metric to use. It's not about how intelligent something is. It's about whether it has a mind, and can suffer degraded states of existence.

China is a real problem for pretty much all sealife. They will take what's theirs and yours too. Unfortunately it goes back to "the great leap forward" the starvation was so severe that today they still greet each other with the phrase have you eaten? Here in America they have raped the coast of California with their buckets, hundreds of them at a time, taking far more than the daily personal limit allows. They don't care. The starfish population there may never recover, why? Can you even eat starfish? It's beyond monstrous to harvest so much wildlife just for it to just spoil, they don't take so much because they are hungry or have many family members to feed. They take so much because it is there. What a waste, what a shame.
The fishing fleets are getting more brazen too, they turn off their g.p.s. so their location can't be detected, while their trip manifest indicates that they are near iceland. They are not in Iceland my friend, they have been net and trap fishing in protected water around the Galapgos Islands. They don't care. China has been threatened with fines and has had many boats with cargo seized, to bad its too late for the literally TONS of sealife in their cargo holds. How do they respond? More boats than the year before.
Google Chinese fishing fleets, the images alone are enough to make you sick, if not then try reading one of the articles, the numbers will bring tears to your eyes.
In today's day and age they can't Claim hunger as a excuse any longer, they know what they are doing is wrong, they know that we have demanded for it to stop but they don't care. The only way to put a end to the large fleets is to fire upon them and let the boat sink. This has been done a few times in the past, but the crew have been rescued. I say don't rescue the crew, let them tread water, film it, send the footage with the DEMAND that they cease and desist, otherwise this will happen from now on. They will get the message. Either the people in charge will change their illegal practices or the fishermen themselves will conclude that the risk isn't worth it anymore. We have to put our foot down, or there won't be anything left in the oceans. I'm afraid that the risk of losing their boats and possibly their lives just won't be enough stop them.

These animals always had a special place in the hearts of early humans, as quite a lot of burial sites for dogs show (like the Bonn-Oberkassel dog for example)
