This video was very educative about Japan's city and culture. The fact that the host is fluent in Japanese made this video 10 times more enjoyable. Well done!
Seriously epic. I know it's a tourism ad, but this is definitely far more convincing and enjoyable to watch than the fast paced, 10 second/1 minute ad spots featuring ALL the things you can see and do in a city we all know anyway. I have wanted to visit Japan for ages now and when I do eventually go, I will try to include Ehime for sure!
Ehime was where I got sent when I selected "countryside" on the study abroad form. It was incredibly lonely at times, but the people I met made all the difference. Decades later, Ehime is still where I consider my hometown in Japan. I've learned that it's the kindness of the people you meet who make a place light up and unforgettable in your heart. That's why although I've been to many other places in Japan as a tourist after I grew up, they don't compare to the way Ehime will always feel in my heart. Matsuyama has such a beautiful castle, the view of the sea from the top is unexpected and breathtaking. I've never been to a city where the castle is still such an integral part of daily life for its residents. The castle is situated at the very heart of the city, not tucked away in a hard to reach corner. Every early morning, students ride their bicycles around the castle moat to get to various high schools and colleges across the city. As a citrus producing area, the mikan in Ehime taste fresher and juicier than anywhere else. May your travels to Matsuyama and the rest of Ehime result in the sweetest memories.
I've felt the loneliness when living 2-3 years in Japan. I feel you. But despite that, I feel home in Japan, especially in Shikoku - more than my home country and more than the country where I live now.
I've lived in Matsuyama for the last 8 years. During the pandemic, tourism from both within and outside the country dropped off pretty quickly and has only recently started to pick up again. Most memorable things about my two visits to Japan were outside the regular international tourist route... It's like, don't get me wrong, I loved my visits to Tokyo, I loved my visits to Kyoto, Osaka, and the main tourist attractions too... though the second time I visited Japan back in 2018 it sure was almost too packed to enjoy fully. My first trip there was back in 2007, and back then you could still see things better and enjoy more of the touristic places. Nowadays, specially now that tourism is back, I can tell that the most famous spots will be too overflowing with people to enjoy freely. But the real magic of Japan happens in places like that.... Ehime, the smaller cities in the east coast of Japan, or even smaller towns on the interior of the largest prefectures. It's there that you start seeing more of an untainted history and culture that came to modernity in a more organic manner. There's also all these grand pieces of historical value that are not swamped by tourism, and yet there is great care to all these places, they are very well maintained, lots of environments that leaves you in kind of a contemplative state. And we only got to visit a few of those places because of my ancestors... we were looking for possible towns and places my great great grandparents came from, seeing if there was still some remnant of the family there (most of the Japanese side of my family migrated before WWII, so it's a long way back). Anyways, great showing from Vice! Wasn't expecting it... xD I also wish I could speak Japanese as fluently as KTea. xD Never learned the language, the family teaching Japanese to kids stopped around my parents' generation...
This was so beautiful - the culture, the people, and it felt very genuine and less typical touristy vibes. I’m always so envious of folks who can speak Japanese fluently! Thanks for sharing this 🙏
When we visited Ozu castle the employees were beyond excited to see us. We answered a long questionnaire, got presents and wäre greeted in town by many people. We felt like famous emissaries 🇩🇪🇯🇵😸 Shikoku is such an underrated place 😻

I know about Ehime mainly after watching "Saka no Ue no Kumo" (坂の上の雲). It's just fascination how an area far away from Tokyo can produce some of Japan's greatest literary and military leaders.
As someone who lived in Japan for a few years, it is refreshing to see this side of Japan. Most videos are about the food and culture, but there are so many unique activities that can be enjoyed by locals and tourists. Awesome video and your Japanese is on point. Mecha jouzu desune.
Best content I've seen on the Vice channel so far! This journalist is so interesting, I love her genuine reactions and the respect she shows to the people she interviews.. Amazing!
Like K'Tea stated at the beginning of the video, Japan has SO MUCH to offer. Not taking credit away from Tokyo and Kyoto (which are great cities in its own right), but exploring and understanding other cities and towns in this beautiful country will definitely give a new appreciation to the people and the culture. I am lucky I get to live here!! Favorite city: Fukuoka.
I lived in Shizuoka Prefecture for about 2-3 years and found myself frequently drawn to Shikoku Island whenever I had a few days to spare. My trips there often involved impromptu road trips, deciding my next destination on a whim. I felt at peace with myself in Shikoku. There was something about the incredible variety of beautiful landscapes, and the fact that few tourists visit - I felt Shikoku was my secret paradise. Nowadays, I live in London with my spouse and our child, with another little one on the way. I've had the pleasure of taking my wife to Shikoku for a vacation once before, and we just returned from our second trip last week, this time accompanied by our son. We embarked on a road trip around the island, primarily exploring Ehime, with brief stops in Kochi and Kagawa (all 4 prefectures of Shikoku are equally nice). The experience was so nice once again, particularly with our child joining us this time. Ehime and Shikoku hold a special place in my heart. Although it might be a bit challenging to access, especially without a car, I consider Shikoku the finest part of Japan. These regions offer a refreshing break from the typical flashy tourist spots, presenting an authentic and picturesque landscape. From the serene northern coast along the Seto Inland Sea and its charming islands, to the southern coast facing the Pacific Ocean, and the stunning inland mountains, Shikoku is truly breathtaking. How I wish I could reside in Shikoku!
I didn't even know how beautiful Ehime is. As a Japanese, it's a shame many foreign tourists just go to like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and leave. I love Kyoto but nowadays it's almost over-tourism. There are a lot more local places worth visiting with less crowds and more authenticity like Ehime. I personally recommend like, Kagoshima, Aizuwakamatsu, Kanazawa(my hometown!), and so much more!
So proud of Ozu for its revitalization and restoration, especially after the devastating floods in 2018. The Princess Prefecture's best days are still to come!
This was awesome. I bet she shocked the hell out of the people she talked to. They were just as surprised as us. 😅😂 Made me sit back and think how it would be to travel aboard. Not going to lie. Sometimes I feel safer in my own country because I know where not to go. 😅😅😅 But I'm probably wrong. This was inspiring. I would love to see more of her travels in the future.
The thing is that 90% of countries probably just don’t have areas you “can’t go to”… I’m always amazed by Americans fears of going abroad when they live in one of the more unsafe countries on the planet 😅
I lived in Japan and can assure you that it's safer than pretty much everywhere in the U.S., lol. I walked around my neighborhood at 2 or 3 a.m. without a care in the world. In the U.S., I wouldn't do that.
The most disciplined people I’ve EVER met can’t even tip them they’re so genuine to their culture. To serve is on a different level in Japan like even their landfill is clean🤣💯 #ilovejapan #tonkotsulover💯
My mom is from Matsuyama. When I lived in Japan, I would go every summer and winter break to visit my family. I definitely feel it's home to go back to Ehime. Thank you Vox for sharing.
she's clearly not a typical tourist, she knows how to do correctly thing in japan. like somebody else said, thats a huge flex to be able to speak japanese.
what i ADORE in Japanese culture is that they keep their architecture sometimes completely the same when reconstructing it. it's so so so amazing, there's nothing more beautiful than cherishing what is built historically and making it better without destroying it
If travelers would like to go to other local tour spot, I recommend to go to Yamagata City in Yamagatat Prefecture too. They have Mt.Zao, good Onsen ryokans,Yamadera which is temple on the mountain, delicious Yamagata beef, Imoni potato soup, Don-Donyaki crape, lots of Ramen and Soba restaurants, top class ranked rice ''Tsuyahime," good Sake and best cherry in the world.
Have to add it to my list. Going back to Tokyo again to see friends I haven't seen since 2018. Once I retire, I hope to live in Japan for a little while so I can travel within the country.
It was a delightful experience to watch this beautiful video, I had chills. It made me feel how beautiful it's our planet, humanity and different cultures.
I’m Japanese in Osaka, it’s so happy to be said that "I want to go" "I love Japanese culture" but it’s superficial ironically, you guys don’t know about dark side of here 😏 but please enjoy visiting 😉
I live in southern Ehime. It's a really cool and beautiful place. Not many tourists come to Ehime, especially not the southern part, but more people should definitely visit! Ehime also has the cutest prefecture mascot IMO, Mikyan is so cute!
I used to live and work in neighboring Kochi, and I loved visiting all four Shikoku prefectures. But besides Kochi, I do love Ehime as well because of Matsuyama's sister city connection with my hometown of Sacramento, California. I've done the major touristy things in Matsuyama, but I now see that there are other things to do and places to see in Ehime the next time I'm in Japan.
Perfect timing I am going to Ehime for a couple of nights in August. It’s gonna be epic. Do one on Tottori which has natural sand dunes. It’s said to be a desert but really it’s a gigantic beach with sand stretching for about 1 mile at its widest point. Something you can’t see anywhere else. Been to Japan 3 times already. Most Japanese old towns look similar, however the food is different as local ingredients differ from region. Japanese tend to use primarily local ingredients so each region has its own unique flavor. I am glad that people are trying to revitalize these old towns.
Love this! Japan has been on my list for awhile. Now that travel restrictions has eased, it is time to plan a visit. Definitely going to Kyoto but now Ehime is added to that list amongst other places in Japan. What a beautiful country, food, and people.
When KTea started speaking in Japanese it blew my mind; and then switching in between languages. You could see that she has even learned the Japanese non-verbal language too 🤯 The tone, the vocal inflexions, the facial and gestural expressions were so on point. Congrats for an amazing work!!
That castle interior looks gorgeous like perfect wood craftsmanship plus the fac that the locals and the gov put in work/effort and funds to help revitalize the old edo period castle for tourism. Exceptional work, plus the local ehime province for trying to rebuild new hotels an maintain architecture. Well done.
Shikoku is a beautiful Island! There are many videos filmed by a specialist company of the mountain roads following the river gauges & exploring the old villages - they are stunningly breathtaking.

you must be american .... its clear this woman is a half Japanese
KTea is cool. She's from Japan, she's half Japanese.
The most disciplined people I’ve EVER met can’t even tip them they’re so genuine to their culture. To serve is on a different level in Japan like even their landfill is clean🤣💯 #ilovejapan #tonkotsulover💯
Grate job VICE, K'Tea and of course camera man 👏👏👏
7:47 This shot made me tear up. Such a simple, beautiful meal, created with such pride.
i shed a tears when i first watched this video, since i used to live in Ehime and i love it so much
You should come back!
The cinematography in this was so beautiful
I really prefer the sceneries of the countryside in Japan. It always gives me this sense of peace and content.
My mom is from Matsuyama. When I lived in Japan, I would go every summer and winter break to visit my family. I definitely feel it's home to go back to Ehime. Thank you Vox for sharing.
Japan is so much more. I just love this country from culture to food. Hopefully I visit again this year
Adding Ehime to my list of places to visit. Thank you for this content, Vice!
she's clearly not a typical tourist, she knows how to do correctly thing in japan. like somebody else said, thats a huge flex to be able to speak japanese.
When Ur born there and half Japanese does help.
She also hip-hop dances.
Thank you for making this video. I have been to Japan 4 times already and never heard of that prefacture. I will surely make it next time.
As someone who lived in Japan for a few years I can attest that it is amazing and I miss it all the time.
I’m looking into living in japan for a short time. Would it be worth doing at an older age?
@@manny7662 it’s worth it regardless of your age! It’s safe, exciting, beautiful, and eye opening! Go whenever you can and soak it in!
I love watching stuff like this
please do more of these!
what i ADORE in Japanese culture is that they keep their architecture sometimes completely the same when reconstructing it. it's so so so amazing, there's nothing more beautiful than cherishing what is built historically and making it better without destroying it
If travelers would like to go to other local tour spot, I recommend to go to Yamagata City in Yamagatat Prefecture too.
I am from Tokyo. I would like to go to Ehime someday.
Thank you. Your visit to Japan is always welcome.

Woah!! I see you KTea!! You’re amazing! 🤩❤️✨
very cool. Where can I see more Ktea content?
Wow! Great to see Ehime being shown to the rest of the world. Have been living in Matsuyama for the past 20 years. Love it.
Beautiful people, architecture, and landscape. Thanks for sharing ✌️
Her appearance ruins the beauty of this entire thing.
Wow! Mind blowing clip! Hoping for more!
Have to add it to my list. Going back to Tokyo again to see friends I haven't seen since 2018. Once I retire, I hope to live in Japan for a little while so I can travel within the country.
"rebuild from the past, tradition and culture last, leading a new path." i like this.
Simply a Dreamlike place. What a beautiful country Japan is
Never expected to see a VICE video about somewhere I live. Ehime is great!!
This is next level futurism. Thank you and respect to Japan.
I used to live in Kagawa, so if anything, this brings back memories.
Every place has its dark sides.

We like your creative works. It inspires us. Japan has much to offer the world.
I'm aware of many of the social issues affecting Japan so some of the people commenting are making me laugh 😂
I love it when Japanese locals speak English with their intonation . It’s always comforting
I lived in Misawa Japan from 1989 to 1993. My pops got stationed there back then. I miss Japan so much.
what a beautiful commercial, thank you!👌🏼💜
I live in southern Ehime. It's a really cool and beautiful place. Not many tourists come to Ehime, especially not the southern part, but more people should definitely visit! Ehime also has the cutest prefecture mascot IMO, Mikyan is so cute!
More content like this please. This host and this country, I'd watch a series on it.

@@iobject i know and I don't care
I used to live and work in neighboring Kochi, and I loved visiting all four Shikoku prefectures. But besides Kochi, I do love Ehime as well because of Matsuyama's sister city connection with my hometown of Sacramento, California. I've done the major touristy things in Matsuyama, but I now see that there are other things to do and places to see in Ehime the next time I'm in Japan.
Wow definitely didn't know about this place and I went to so many cities last time in JP!
7:05, that was so cute when the fish scared her. She is adorable
Her knowing Japanese is amazing.
She's half Japanese and was born and raised there.
@@jasmineanderson994 why does she have an american accent then
Asians knowing English isn't?
@@loke5551 Most of the half American and Japanese people I've seen on youtube have American accent's when speaking English.
@@loke5551 why does your question sound condescending. Go watch her fvcking interviews she explains it. She's a professional dancer as well.
It's so awesome. Great video and exploration.
Such a beautiful country and people!
Perfect timing I am going to Ehime for a couple of nights in August. It’s gonna be epic. Do one on Tottori which has natural sand dunes. It’s said to be a desert but really it’s a gigantic beach with sand stretching for about
1 mile at its widest point.
What a beautiful country, food, and people.
the host is lovely! i love her energy
Thats Awesome! Is Amazing to see Japanese ppl have a strong connection with their history, they recognise and preserve their culture, immense respect
When KTea started speaking in Japanese it blew my mind; and then switching in between languages. You could see that she has even learned the Japanese non-verbal language too 🤯 The tone, the vocal inflexions, the facial and gestural expressions were so on point. Congrats for an amazing work!!
She’s Japanese
@@AudaciousMarv oh that makes sense
More of this, more of her ❤
That castle interior looks gorgeous like perfect wood craftsmanship plus the fac that the locals and the gov put in work/effort and funds to help revitalize the old edo period castle for tourism. Exceptional work, plus the local ehime province for trying to rebuild new hotels an maintain architecture. Well done.
Need more of herrr!
Shikoku is a beautiful Island! There are many videos filmed by a specialist company of the mountain roads following the river gauges & exploring the old villages - they are stunningly breathtaking.
Speaking Japanese seems really cool, I wish I knew the language.
Nothing holding you back from STUDYING it.
Same! Let's do it
Whats stopping you from learning. Exactly, nothing.
I love her presence and her charisma. She's in sync with herself.
