Title: The Big Sleep
Album: In Bocca Al Lupo
Year: 2006
Genre: alternative rock, folk rock
Lyrics:
At the end of the road he calls everyone home
And the fire will consume us
Striking through to the bone
At the end of the road you will soon hear him call
As the congregations crumble and the chapels will fall
And the taste on your tongue
Well it comes yeah it comes
With the bittersweet pang of remorse and pain
Till the judgment is made
The prosecution's won
The gavel has won and justice is done
The courtroom clears and I'm left alone on the bench
My wife and children gone along with my defense
The bailiff leads me back to my cell
Like the riverman ferrying me to hell
I can't blame them, no
To hate me for what I've done
I hear them whispering in the hall
You live and die by the gun
All I can do is sit here and pray
I'll be forgiven on judgment day
Tell my wife in our yard buried underneath the pine
Theres a shoebox full of money of which I never earned a dime
Use it to start over the way things should have been
Live honest, and love again
Tell my wife, tell my kids
I never meant for this to happen
When they flip the switch please do not stay
I couldn't bear for you to remember me this way
When I'm listening to this loud in the car, and he yells "I never meant for this to happen"... ooh, I just get the chills, and tears come to my eyes. The entire second half of the album (with the exception of "Steam Rising") just tells such a sad and amazing story.
"Live honest and love again". Get's me every fucking time man. such a powerfull line. One of their best songs IMO. This just smacks me in the face every time.
It's tragically ironic that these musicians aren't more well known. I've seen them live twice and met them all. The are ridiculously talented and interesting individuals. Cheers friends
"Use it to start over, like how it should have been. Live honest.....and love again". That gave me chills.
I love how they made kinda like a flat line at the end. Such a great touch.
Murder By Death are amazing, and this is such an emotive song. Every time I listen to it I get chills.

the Masters of Horror version was called The End of The Road I believe.... later recorded as The Big Sleep.
grappler41 it’s so much better and I can’t seem to find it.
Found it. SakuraKillgannon is the user. Song is End of the Road with their own black and white video. Skip to the 40 second mark of the video.
Reminds me of Night of the Hunter.
4 dislikes......people as shallow as a puddle at the edge of the sea.....tragic
And then albums like Drones by Muse get rock album of the year...
+Awka Liwen I heard that drones album on the road back from our trip last year with my brother cause he likes muse . and that album sucks ass I got bored asf listening to it. I think he did to cause he didn't finish the album lol.
Anyone got a link to the alternate version of this on the Masters of Horror soundtrack? The piano and synth makes a world of difference.
