I met a girl at a subway on my lunch break and it was one of the rare times I had it in me to talk to a stranger. I picked her up later that night on my motorcycle and took her to a bridge that lead to a nice little peninsula in a river. We talked by the water for the better part of four or five hours. She showed me this beautiful song along with several others. Nothing came of it after that night but it's such a fond memory. If you're out there seeing this, thank you for a night I won't forget and music I'll always love.
Listened to this hundreds of times after my grandpa died 3 years ago at the age of 69, thinking of my grandmother left alone after 40 years of being together. He had been slowly declining, battling pulmonary fibrosis, and emphysema, wasting away into nothing. He was the only true father figure I ever had, and it’s still incredibly difficult not having him here. This song helped get me through, and still does.
Yeah there is something very comforting about this song. I heard it first at the end of a movie called Lost Creek which is a movie for kids but it really struck me and this song playing at final credits made the movie reach into me and haunt me
I've been a fan of y'alls for years and years now, this is still one of my most favorite songs by y'all ever. I wish I could see y'all in concert but I live on my own at 20 going to school and work full time, so time and money are both things I don't have. However I listen to this song and may others when the stress starts getting to be a little bit too much. Thank y'all for making such great music and keep doing what ya'll are doing.
The way the piano motif shows up at the beginning and comes back at the end is just so gorgeous. I love the instrumentation so much in this band but sometimes just a few notes on a piano is all it takes to make something that will stick with you forever
Something about Lost River just always brings me to tears. Was worth crying all over again for the sake of watching this beautiful video to what has got to be one of my favorite songs of all time now.
It is incredibly moving. to me it feels more like sitting on the patio, watching the sun set on a warm summer's day. I guess you can see a lot of facettes in this song.
Lyrics: Hush now creature, dry your eyes I know a place where a body can hide Oh, I know a place where a body can hide Last time I saw you, our table was bare If you hurry and join me, I will lead you there Sink beneath the water, sink in to the deep In a pond just off the road that feeds this muddy creek Oh, in a pond just off the road that feeds this muddy creek Though my days are over You know where I'll be Swim that lost river to me Though my days are done The waters will always run Swim that lost river to me Though I'm gone, don't be afraid We'll meet again on the river someday The croak of the frogs will lead you true Wear a skirt of greenstone, so I know it's you Wear a skirt of greenstone, to drag you to the blue Though my days are over You know where I'll be Swim that lost river to me Though my days are done The waters will always run Find that la-la-lost river, find me! Lay your head on the river bed Drink from the river and find your way to me Oh, rest your head on the river bed Drink from the river and find your way to me Oh, lay your head on the river bed Drink from the river and find your way to me Oh, rest your head on the river bed Drink from the river and find your way to me Oh, drink from the river and find your way to me Oh, drink from the river and find your way to me Oh, drink from the river

I found this song back in fall of 2016 in my last year of college and listened to it so much while working on campus or playing a certain game. Now, whenever I think of my senior year or when I open up the game, this song pops into my head. This song helped me so much in getting through all the stress of graduating and finding the job I still have today. It's now joined by The Other Shore and I couldn't be happier!
Perfect visual for the song! Never knew about the video until now but absolutely matches what was going on in my head while listening to this beautiful piece
That was amazing. MBD has been my favorite band for around five years now. Nothing tops them. Also, meeting adam when they came to savannah was amazing.
I for one hate music videos. I think its like watching a movie, without reading the book. Music is like it reading enriches your life, dares us to dream. I did really enjoy this video. There was no shameless promoting, no unneeded distraction. Just like the song, it drags you in.
The video and the song are both sublime. Honestly, this song has the mark of greatness, true greatness. Enough said. Thanks Murder by Death. Thanks Gabe Darling.
I noticed something about Adam when he goes to introduce this song at a gig or a live show. When and if he decides to describe it he says the following: "This is a love song about a ghost who fell into a river and tries to drag his loved ones in with him". And then he'll crack some joke and be like "sounds like my friday night" or something like that. I don't know about you guys, but I sense some trickery here. My theory is that Adam introduces this song in such a way that would suggest the ghost at the bottom of the river is an antagonist of sorts, and reinforces the idea that nobody look past it by making it seem unserious with all the joke making. Of course, Adam knows that this song has more to it than that. And chances are, if you haven't watched this video, he's probably fooled you. Only those who were willing to put in the time with the song understand its true meaning. Adam is a very smart guy, it's for sure not out of the question that he would try something like this.
I know this reply is VERY late, but my theory is that the dead lover isnt actually calling from beyond the grave, but that he is a hallucination in the mind of the female lover. No real lover would want their partner to commit suicide, even if it was to reunite them after death. I think the woman is experiencing intense grief and wants to kill herself, and imagines that that is what the guy would have wanted. The entire song and video is just in her head, and the reality is much sadder.
Who’s waiting for you on the riverbank? All I can see are my grandparents waving from a rickety little dock like the one from the lake. They’re strong and healthy. My pets are there, too. Later we’re going to go down to the little creek. You’re finally old enough to swim past the rocks. Who wants to come? 🙋♂️ When my time comes, I’ll paddle that river until I find them all again.
I love the song and video! It's brings up so many feels of the imagination. There's so many stories you could make out of this video, what's someone else's opinion on what they think the video is trying to explain?
Maybe its my classically trained mind, but it reminds me of Orpheus and Eurydice. The video opens with the last leaves leaving a tree, like a recent death. The female wakes in a field, perhaps Elysian fields of Orcus, and picks a flower, perhaps reflecting on life. "Though my days are over, you'll know where I'll be" they sing during this. When she floats past him, it brings to mind the theme of "Don't look back. Keeping with this theme, the river must be Lethe, the river of forgetfulness that the deceased drank from to forget about life, which would then create an interesting contrast that I can't quite explain, but maybe irony?
