I appreciate how you completely passed over mentioning any of the deeper aspects of the game and limited your footage to the first two chapters. I'll never forget the scene that precedes getting the "The Real Slay the Princess Starts Here" achievement.

+1 to the voice acting, the whole experience definitely would have been lesser by it if it wasn't there. Not just the princess and the narrator but all of the Voice of. I think they're also performed by Johhny Simms. I love how the personality for each internal monologue shine through with just one guy doing different tone and cadence along their interaction with each other and the narrator.

Shoutout to Jonny Simms for the incredible voice acting of the narrator. If you want to hear more stuff from him I really recommend The Magnus Archives. It's a collection of stories from people that have had chilling paranormal experiences that are collected by the Magnus Institute. It's extremely well written and is very well acted.

Thanks for the recommendation, the goi d of the hero is amazing too, genuinely I know it’s such a small thing but voice of the smitten had me laughing that entire loop.

I am the first one to admit, I have been burned by bad recommendations when it comes to visual novels, and after playing this, I'd love to try more, I am going to brave it, so if you have any recommendations, let me know :)

Also, wow its hard to make a video about a game when you're trying so hard to avoid any spoilers possible and let the viewer expeirence it for themselves, especially when the game is 99% text, and the best parts for visually engaging shots are major spoilers hahaha

It really depends on what genres you would enjoy outside of VNs, but I just completed The Song Of Saya and it was really good. It's shortish and took me just over 6 hours. It's a horror novel about a guy who wakes up after a car accident and everything in the world now looks like blood, guts and gore. People look like slithering, slimy monsters. But amongst all of that horror, there's one girl who still looks human. I think there's a lot of shock value there, but it also explores the psychology of insanity and the descent into a complete loss of humanity. Probably not the one to play around family, and look into the content warnings if you're a bit sensitive to things, but you should give it a go if it interests you! If you're into manga/anime, it's by the guy who made Madoka Magika.

Another great visual novel is class of 09. The premise is "this is an accurate representation of Highschool" and it is very funny.

I find the characterization of "terrible" rather unjust. I understand it does not appeal to everyones tastes; it can be more akin to reading than playing. However, the genre is filled with wonderful experiences. It's important to recognize that "Hatoful Boyfriend" and "DDLC" are satire and a subversion of the genre, respectively. They are good games in their own ways, but certainly not the best representatives of the genre. It's very understandable that you may have gotten a skewed perception by only playing those two. Like any genre, there are clichés and subpar games, but I believe such shortcomings hardly warrant labeling the entire genre as "terrible". Then again, I'm certain your choice of words isn't meant entirely literally, marketing likely playing a role, but I still felt compelled to advocate for the genre's potential.

@@FireTurtle-cc1tq a very large amount of genres originate from the Japanese video game industry. Super Mario bros, zelda, even pacman being examples of hugely genre defining games coming from there.
edit: that is to say, even if they were born in japan, they are now global. I know youre likely joking but I wanted to put this out there

I think my pinned comment pretty much covers and answers everything you’ve written here already :)
It’s the same reason I added the little “to me*” in the intro and why I admitted I’ve only played two on recommendation, and how that’s the reason for my dislike.
You’re totally okay to advocate for the genre, but you really don’t need too :) you’re better off just recommending the games you think are worth it.
I’m sure there are plenty of things you think are terrible because of bad experiences, it’s just normal for us as people.

One of the under appreciated aspects is how well written (in terms of language) this game is. What I mean by that is not narratively though that is great too what I mean is the actual language is amazing its extremely reminiscent of classic literature.

wow i cant believe that a genre called visual NOVELS "plays itself"

    • @EljayIsHere
      @EljayIsHere  5 месяцев назад +1

I know what you’re trying to say, but I think you might be confusing visual novels the reading/comic medium, and visual novels the gaming medium.
When done as a game, they’re not meant to play themselves, they’re supposed to take the idea and make it interactive, otherwise it’s just reading a comic or watching a slideshow.
It’s meant to still be a game :)

@@EljayIsHere some of the best video games i have ever played have been visual novels where you have almost no control apart from rarely making choices which lead to different endings. those stories have stuck with me far longer than many other games ive played. i love reading books and visual novels are literally just books but better. you said yourself in the video that the only vns you played are hatoful boyfriend and doki doki, which are both parodies of the genre.
they arent necessarily "meant to be a game" or "made interactive" and im not sure where you got that idea. vns have always been closer to book than game. but even then there are visual novels with the level of interactivity you desire such as danganronpa or AI the somnium files anyway idk sorry if this comes off as aggressive
