I started noticing that pattern of behavior in 2020 and I got off of all social media(besides RUclips) it was definitely making me feel depressed at times. I started educating myself about the world instead. Best move I've ever made
Love that, I have had much more time in my life to exercise, cook and consume educational content since I deleted my social media. I thought it was my job taking up my time but it was my social media addiction
That’s funny- I’ve been doing the same thing since I entered the internet around age 8 when I got my first device. I had a brief 2.5 year stint on discord before deciding anything beyond RUclips was stupid and a waste of my time
I used to be a model. I started modeling the same time social media was invented, so my skills were a hybrid of old-school and IG. I stopped using social media on 2020 and unfortunately I couldn’t continue with my modeling career. It’s like if I don’t have social media I don’t exist… But my mental health is better without social media
I avoid social media like the plague since I'm already addicted to RUclips, good thing the addiction spreads to informative videos so at least I can learn.
I used to avoid TikTok and Instagram before. But now even non toxic platforms like RUclips or Pinterest have become rly overwhelming as well. So now i have to not use my phone all together:')
As someone with adhd diagnosed since childhood my attention span and focus always been a problem. But it got so much worse after TikTok. Became an addiction. “Just one more video and I’ll do the dishes” “just one more video no get out of bed” I felt like a slave to it with hours of my day being robbed. I deleted the app and am starting to be Abel to focus on simple tasks again. Really messed me up.
But it would be a blessed because U actually think more critical in order to survive, I wonder if the others feels the same, they look okay with all these stuff happening
If you can deleting all social media (including RUclips) from your phone, and making your phone as boring as possible is key. If you have to access RUclips, only access it on a separate computer. I separate apps with an iPad and keep my iPhone as boring as possible, but if you can stick with just have a boring phone with no social media, and a computer for everything else (work, school, youtube), that would be best.
And next you delete android or IOS and you are free again for real communication outside the electronically generated brainfog ;) I had 16 apps, now only 5, and thats enuff. The most important app is the browser.
You too pretty to be worried about tic TOC dear. Come over to muscle shoals Alabama and we'll take the boat out on the lake and do some skiing! U will forget ur phone
I honestly think when our generation gets older, we are going to see an epidemic of people with dementia and eye problems from decades of looking at screens.
The answer is much better. Because of the internet, they have access to education. There was no such thing as a childhood education until the internet came along.
@@alwynwatson6119yes education may be very widely available to kids now because of the internet, but it’s not educational content they’re not looking at. it’s influencers, it’s unrealistic standards for appearance and success, it’s constant propaganda. these poor kids don’t stand a chance anymore
I think social media does far more bad than good atm. Non-verbal communication as in simply texting makes you emotionally disconnected. I think online debates tend to be so abusive because we are unable to emotionally connect with the person on the other side. Debating or talking in real life is far more complex because there are so many "layers" to it. From an emotional perspective, to the fact that you simply cannot avoid the consequences etc. The creep for validation is also very concerning. Social media validation runs into two very unhealthy extremes. Either you feel so unwelcome, unappreciated and disliked that it causes and increases feelings of depression or on the other side you get so much attention that you feel like you are above others increasing narcissistic and egocentric tendencies. Overall it took a huge toll on peoples self perception with increased interest in plastic surgical interventions which I find concerning on many levels. Especially considering that the human body is not a commodity you buy to please anyone but the very thing you are and a very complex system that easily gets damaged by such vain and possibly dangerous interventions.
Sharp thinking, the Last point actually pretty sad because I see it happening with my own eyes., its sad reality but guess as a family we supposed to get back to our morals value of life
It also ruins our dopamine system, we get flooded and with it in ways we aren’t meant to be and it’s just like how drug abuse works, a really vicious cycle. I agree a lot with all your points!
It’s funny to remember back to health class, when the teacher stressed the fact that drugs hijacked our dopamine award system so we feel good..we feel happy. Who knew social media would work that same way??
People who understand addiction saw it a mile away. I was a heroin addict for a number of years. I noticed the extreme reaction to taking it away. Same reaction drug addicts have when you threaten their drugs. It’s the same way gambling, sex, food, etc. are addictive.
@@BloodSweatandFears I never was a participant of social media for that exact reason, RUclips used to serve as a creative platform for self-expression where I could find niche content relating to hobbies I enjoyed partaking in. I was curious about the Shorts feature during its inception but it was abundantly clear that it was paving the way of TikTok to where my recommendations will never be the same again. Now I catch myself doomscrolling on my feed, wasting time without finding a real sense of belonging. Just watching videos of current happenings, most of which senseless drama I honestly couldn’t care less about in retrospect. It feels more rewarding just to smoke soft drugs like cannabis because it makes me realize there’s better things to do out there when my mind is racing, whereas being terminally online really is just a cheap high.
There’s something not right with social media. It drains me. And if you’re not on it, you feel like you’re missing out. This can’t be good for the brain. It’s like these companies are playing around with our deepest needs as a human. Nothing beats face to face human contact, nothing.
Actually the creators that created social media or let alone smart phones don’t use these at all in their lives, heck even their children don’t use it because they understand the psychological harm behind these media. If you want to know it’s in the book digital minimalism by Cal Newport
Now just imagine what it's doing to children's brains that are developing. If social media does this to you as a grown adult, the effects must be at least 2 fold for kids.
@@Smokie181 yup. What I’ve noticed is that when I’m away from the internet completely I sleep better, feel calmer, eat better, have better conversations with people, make more eye contact, feel happier, the list goes on. Life before the internet and especially social media was better. We are deluded into thinking we have more freedom than we do thanks to social media…
it's lonely because everyone is always on there phone, even out in public, and I sit there watching people I'm with just scroll and scroll. It's depressing
I think the thing that a lot of us are missing in our lives is just being ok with being bored. Sometimes you just need to let your brain settle, be a little uncomfortable and maybe wander a bit. So many people I know are so addicted to the quick dopamine hits that it feels like they're deathly afraid of being bored. I just replaced the social media I was obsessed over with ones that I can get something productive out of but get bored of quicker, just as a way to wane myself off of heavier usage. I get bored a little easier, but I sure enjoy music a lot more
Psychedelics are just an exceptional mental health breakthrough. It's quite fascinating how effective they are against depression and anxiety. Saved my life.
Can you help with the reliable source I would really appreciate it. Many people talk about mushrooms and psychedelics but nobody talks about where to get them. Very hard to get a reliable source here in Australia. Really need!
Yes, dr.sporessss I have the same experience with anxiety, depression, PTSD and addiction and Mushrooms definitely made a huge huge difference to why am clean today.
I deleted all my social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) a couple years ago. It was great at the beginning but slowly I started to waste more time on RUclips and reddit. So I'm practically in the same spot again
Yeah, same here 😭 it’s a real issue, because even if I watch educational and self improving videos, spending like 8 hours a day in RUclips is FAR from okay, and it really became a serious habit, I’m addicted. It’s as if I can’t spend a day without touching my phone, literally. Anyways, after this video I’ll attempt to not use RUclips or any other app from now, 10 am till the next day. Wish me luck
@@Yana-tf1he it happens to me too. I don't have any other social media app other than RUclips and i feel i binge watch as soon as i start with any videos.
@@zerosoma33 Depends on how it's used. I personally only use it to ask questions and spark discussions. Since it's more long-form and constructive than most sites, it's probably the least of our evils.
The sad thing is people are more lonely than ever before. Social media has isolated everyone. People also compare themselves to others and there fake happy lives. People cheat more easier because of social media. People are losing connection. Also all the media profiles they collect on all our texts, tweets, and things we watch. Big brother. I feel very sorry for young people today. They never knew a life without it
I don’t consider RUclips to be in the same category of others like Facebook, insta, Tik tok. I use youtube for guides or help enhancing my other hobbies(guitar, gaming, running, etc). The others ARE the hobby. I took myself off Facebook, never used the others. It has been 4 years away and I’m very happy with my decision - running a marathon tomorrow!!
I remember back in highschool, the internet was becoming more and more available. In school we debated on all the positive and negative of the internet. Among the negative is that we would lose now privacy. Every bit of information about us will be made available to just anyone. Fast forward to now, I see that this is the least of our problem.
I think we also need to address that so many people who already have mental health issues are so attracted to social media. It's not only social media that causes the issues but often that the issues are there and social media feeds them... just like narcotics. I've never been good on social media and left fb on Feb 14 2010 and i haven't looked back. Oddly enough it was the director of the fb movie who helped me make my decision. He did an interview on "the daily show" where he said that people need to remember that social media is to socializing what reality tv is to reality. Salty most people are just incapable of distinguishing the difference.
I'm kind of a loner type of person (introvert) and get stressed out by socializing for real, like irl. Social media helps me then feel connected without the burnout of actual socializing, and with that, I got kinda addicted. I deliberately avoid making actual friends online because it does not feel real, but it's a great way for me to just talk to people without any obligation. But problem is I ended up spending far more time online than offline, neglecting my actual life, and this makes my life ironically feel more empty and pointless now than ever. So yeah, definitely a vicious cycle I'm trying to break.
@@zerosoma33 I wouldn't say that's ever been addicting for me, but definitely a lot more meaningful. Chatting online never feel as real as talking to a person face to face.
I used to use twitter a lot. When I first started, I was quite happy, willing to talk to people on there but after about 6 months my mood started to get bad. There is a lot of bullying that goes on on that site, and I had a similar feeling of being connected to people and it started out like a community of friends, but there were some who liked to make folks feel bad and not really a part of the community. I ended up feeling that I couldn't post anything without it offending someone and there were some folks who wanted me to be a carbon copy of them on everything. If I deviated just a little - bam! That was a reason for bullying and cutting me out. I now can't use websites where there is a lot of rapid fire, short messaging because of it.
I’ve cut nearly all social media from my life. It has done permanent damage to my psyche and outlook on life. Facebook and Reddit are two of the worst things you can ever do to your brain. I have gotten nothing but total mistreatment, group mobbing, and psychological pain from those two platforms. Even message boards are terrible, that’s where it all started. Thanks to all of that, I’m unemployed and scared all the time. I’m working on cutting RUclips too. The internet world is so incredibly bad for you.
Okay i agree with you on most points it rots our brains and creates such a strong group think people don’t think for themselves anymore. But blaming that dynamic for you being unemployed is wild. Plenty of NPCs out there like me who can still work lol
They can take my eyes away from everything but I got my ears and I pay attention for hours and hours. So this is what I encourage people to do. If it’s commentary don’t watch the screen just listen if it’s music listen, if it’s podcast listen if it’s story time listen if it’s anything that can be heard and doesn’t need to be seen listen. That’s the part they can’t take. It will help you so much to listen to longer content. Every chance you get try to watch a 5 minute video instead of a minute one. It will be the best thing you do.
Social media can be great, especially if it’s used to focus on learning a new skill or a new language, I’ve gotten allot out of it, it can rewire the way you think in a positive way, long form podcasts can be like listening to audio books, you can sit in on university-level lectures on a myriad of subjects and disciplines, the flip side to this is all that you mentioned in your video which was great BTW.
That’s not social media though, your not socializing with anyone when listening to a podcast or when watching a RUclips video, social media is such as instagram, Facebook, twitter, and Snapchat and alike apps in which you create a online personality
I started using social media in middle school and continued through college. It honestly didn't contribute anything positive to my life. I was more attentive to my online presence than my physical one and I lost touch with things I genuinely enjoyed in my life. After college I deleted all my social media and decided to focus on maintaining a few meaningful relationships and avoided all the frivolous ones social media brought around. I feel happier and more present in my daily life and the fewer friendships I do maintain are far more meaningful and fulfilling. I still use my smart phone for the majority of my daily life but it isn't the centerpiece of my life anymore, it is just a tool to enhance the life I am already living. I highly recommend people get off social media as much as possible.
In 2018 I got super disciplined and stayed off social (except youtube for educational stuff only) and it made a BIG difference in my length of time being able to stay focused when reading. Socials to me are vanity/ego magnifiers with people who post extensive negative memes for relativity’s sake, not realizing what it does to their subconscious
I didn't have all the science down, but I intuitively knew social media was affecting me psychologically in a very negative way, which is why my Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts were all deleted back in January 2021. I missed social media for about ONE DAY!!!!
I have two cousins who had “tics” and it was really annoying because they said they developed it and I was like that’s literally medically impossible. And they had the tics for about 6 months and then it miraculously went away and they haven’t mentioned it in like 2 years. They are both chronically online and think they have every disorder under the sun that gets views on Tik Tok. It’s really disturbing watching the youth have this behavior because it’s not cute or fun to have a disorder. Anybody who actually lives with one knows that and wishes they could be normal, and to have children cosplaying with their disorder is so disrespectful.
I grew up with social media as a kid in the mid 2000s. What used to be an escape route from the world back then only leading up to 2 decades later and things don’t feel the same anymore. It’s like a private room being invaded by millions. I can’t even think anymore because of the many opinions given by others. Back then I didn’t really care that much on media and watch gamers on RUclipsr and funny videos. Now I’m acknowledging way too many things and that’s how people including my generation is more sensitive now. I am trying to get back to the outside world because things have changed for me. Im still young so there’s still a lot to go to. Yet I only fear that this video is just another mid afternoon snack out of many for me to refill.
70% depression increase is insane but not surprising. we got climate change, prices skyrocketing, almost no one can afford a comfortable home anymore, covid caused everyone to loose a lot of social contact, in teenagers it was a disaster because its propably the most important time to have people around to learn social skills and have new experiences. connecting socially as a teenager is so important and it was taken away from us for 2 years. I had a massive set back from bullying, depression and covid. Im 17 now (18 soon) but I feel like Im still 15.
I think youtube is a good social media, just without the shorts. They should remove those. I feel like social media can be beneficial, like on youtube you can learn about a lot of interesting, useful topics, but the other social medias (instagram, facebook, tiktok..) are majority bad imo. They mostly stress me and makes me feel down. I only use instagram and youtube, but the reels and shorts really stress me out and are so addicting.
I deleted all social media besides RUclips when lockdowns started. My attention span improved and I was able to get started working on improving my skills for my career because I had less stimulation and was therefore bored. Difficult tasks became more fun and easier to start. But I’ve never kicked my RUclips habit because I learn so much from it!! I try to quarantine RUclips to my phone; when I start watching on my computer, I can waste a whole day. Thinking of switching out my iPhone for an old school flip phone. There’s just too much stress for me in being perma-connected to everyone who feels like they want to talk to me and it actively detracts from my ability to live a better, more productive life.
I’ve smoked and quit cigarettes But the most disgusting vile addiction to kerb was social media - TikTok especially- 6 fucking months, 6 months and I felt human again. Grueling process but I would do it again, if it even took a year to get my soul back. To be able to sit, and just be content - holy shit it’s a feeling I can’t describe, it’s the feeling that I’d been searching for my whole life / that kid feeling where life is novel and fresh - new things interest you, your mind connects ideas and day dreams are vivid complex and interesting It’s the feeling these pharma companies were trying to sell me with their SSRIs and adderal. Oh my fucking god those psych meds are a different level of enslavement - lure you in with the honeymoon period where it “works” then down a slippery slope of brain dead zombiefication and dependency/withdrawal but that’s a different conversation
10 months ago I decided to give up Facebook because I just couldn't take all the posts about everybody's good stuff and gossip anymore. I honestly don't miss anything about it.
I think that social media, texting etc is the #1 cause that this new generation of kids have so much social anxiety. They don't know how to deal with people in the (real world) so to speak, unlike people that are older such as myself at 62 years of age.
I never understood what people saw in social media in the first place. You can learn new things watching videos, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are straight up useless.
Even though I only use RUclips (started at like 4 yo so yes very young) I've noticed a big shift in my watching habits for example backthen I used to watch 100 video series all are an average of 20 minutes and somehow had the ability to feel the clickbaity and lying coming through the screen like I subconsciously knew if someone's information was trustworthy or not, also i mostly watched a lot of long videos from a few youtubers and slowly widened my circle of interests I also remember hating most short form content(especially tiktok cuz it's the stupidest and cringiest thing I've ever seen)and what I considered "old people content" so anything from Facebook or Twitter but after switching to English RUclips I've started slowly watching whatever even if I mildly like it and watching RUclips shorts while also being impatient and getting quickly board if a video is more than 7 minutes and I'm not as attached to the youtubers I watch anymore I just kinda watch the videos and move on
and also I remember when I used to watch Minecraft videos and it was only me and the video that's the only things that exist while now I can't even watch something without noticing the things outside the screen
I'm still at the part where I hate short content, I'm gonna take your comment as a heads up since being bored at 7+ minutes is completely foreign to me and I like my attention span.
I used to be really addicted to keeping a "snapchat streak" and i would panic if i didnt have access to internet. Deleted the bullshit app along with instagram and facebook because they just arent worth it. Good video though
I switched from tiktok and mindless scrolling for hours to using RUclips to watch useful things like this aswell as pintrest sometimes, so much better!
I dumped all social media apps from my phone over the past few months. Deleted my IG and TikTok accounts completely and pulled Reddit and Facebook off my phone. If I need them, I still have my accounts on my computer but I don't use them much at all. Only thing I've got left is YT because it's a huge learning tool for me. I've always been somewhat wary of social media, but I do think it's had some positive effects on me and I'm certainly not on my phone as much. I think social media is a huge problem and is contributing far more than anyone wants to admit to many of the crazy issues we're seeing today.
these days I mostly use youtube, and probably the most negative thing is that I live vicariously through experiences of others, which also has some positive sides of learning. You can watch a guy on the other side of the planet building a house, you may learn some things, but the negative thing is that you become to associate his accomplishments as your own, in terms of dopamine perhaps. It's like a drug. It's damaging to my personal life, because I'm constantly in this mode of "absorbing information" as if I'm preparing for life, but nothing happens on my side. I ain't building no house, I have just become a passive observer of how others live their life. On the other hand I'm not unhappy to see others have a happy life, quite the contrary I'm happy for them. Also I don't depend on likes and attention like you mentioned some people in the influencer sphere do. I generally don't like to draw much attention, but would like to start living my own life, but feels like I'm stuck in some kind of limbo of my own making.
I would love to hear your take on schizophrenia. A decade ago some studies came out saying there was some sort of brain scan that could show schizophrenia then the news completely disappeared. I am in a interesting study now about DNA and SZ. I took a dna test and according to the test, one particular kind of medication works better for me. Truly its been the best thing to ever happen in the realm of mental health treatment....but I have no idea how they know anything via a dna sample.
to keep it short, social media has rather had a positive impact in my case. Lots of good, educative information out there & abilty to meet interesting people all around the world. (just have to avoid the not-so-obvious time pit traps that have near to 0 actual "worth-your-time" content and spend time with your close ones in REAL LIFE as well) pphew, couldn't really word it out that short/well but hopefully you get the point, social media CAN be really useful as long as you know how to use it😅 And as always, thank you Clemens for your videos😃
Thing is, you don't nessecarily need social media to get what positives you've described maybe except meeting with new people. Educative information can be found without any digital media granted it may be limiting. However internet is not considered as a social media itself. You can reach boundless recources of education without tapping on social media-hell social media doesn't really contain any educative information anyway. We need to distinguish the difference between internet as a whole and social media such as instagram and stuff. Also social media did made it easier to connect with new people in its early years however, right now we are in a situation where traditional meeting methods such as meeting a friend's friend face-to-face, gov. funded public clubs about hobbies(appearantly there were some kind of events like these lol) are in low amount. Right now, the only proper way you're going to let alone meet new people-to even socialize with you existing friends is via social media. It kinda destroyed traditional ways of meeting with new people, essentially caging us for its use for general socialization-especially romantically. Like, it's getting harder and harder to meet with new girls face-to-face and connect with them cause they're either working, studying or hanging out with people on social media. Am a bit salty ngl. Social media is like cigarettes actually. They cause you artificial dopamine rushes with each nicotine hit is each like. Each puff is each person 'sliding' in your dms lol. We need to get rid of it eventually.
The world before I entered social media was really bright, happy, full of moment that you remember after years. When I joined social media the world became really boring (not in suicidal way), just not that bright and happy. It seems to me that there are no cool places in the world right now, and I'll start my life again by leaving social media
I had my brain broken from social media years ago. No one cared so I just stop caring about social media. Mostly. I may have an account on almost every platform. But they remain bare. But it’s sucks because I feel I can’t connect with people because they don’t have any substance other than online. And I’m sad. I badly want to get to know people.
Deleted facebook, instagram, never actually used tiktok. My youtube feed is full of educational content. I think that you’re right about the algorithms. That’s the ugly part that needs to go
I believe we should stop both social medias and cellular phones. Or at least smartphones. I’m giving myself a couple of years cuz of my job, otherwise I would to it now. I remember being better without social medias and without phones
Me, I don't even have a Tik tok app and I don't even do Instagram, I only do Facebook and RUclips and I have my limits, at some point I usually put my phone down then go out for long walks, after that, I usually feel refreshed when I come back home and take a shower washing out all the sweat.
I’m 21 and social media has always been something that I have had problems with. It’s nice when you want to share with friends how you’re doing but at the same time I would just spend countless hours scrolling through TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, etc. A month ago I deleted TikTok off my phone after realizing that I would only be on there and would spend upwards to 4-5 hours on the platform. I ended up replacing that time with reading and watching movies which I felt good about. I haven’t felt the urge to download TikTok again (one time I did uninstall TikTok and reinstall it a couple days later) which feels like a mini victory. A couple days ago I realized that I ended up spending more of my time scrolling through Instagram and Twitter which caused me to get kind of sad about myself and ended up deleting everything except Messenger, Snapchat, and RUclips. I wish I could bring myself to delete all of them but both Snapchat and Messenger have people on there that I don’t want to just randomly leave and RUclips has a lot of content that I enjoy watching for like an hour or two each day. Overall I feel a little better about myself and have been learning to use my time more wisely and try to become better at my mental health as well as other things.
Also I noticed most of my classmates falling for the "likes measure how good you are instead of the thing you posted" trap like no one gives an s about online anyways so why do you care when you don't even give something of value
It's sad for everyone but for me I find that every time I try to deal with people on the outside world it never works out unfortunately I've had a lot of bad Experience with people in the real world so for my safety I keep to myself and watch hours of social media unfortunately unfortunately I want to break free from this once & for all but it's hard when people have drove me to become a loner...I mean you can't even sit in a park minding your own business without some evil toxic person trying to cause you trouble.
Mainly FB & IG. Never used TikTok or Snapchat etc. I've had psychotic episodes. One of the main ingredients have been heavy fb use. Synchronicity in fb and real life gets too much and very stressful feeling watched. Currently on a break again.
The brief comment about the brain regions for thumb and finger control increasing caught my attention. Why is that a problem? I am an artist (painting and drawing) and was trained in art from a very young age, as is the norm in my family. Would not frequent drawing and painting do the same thing? I would engage in those activities and get so into them I would keep going for hours (even when I was a teenager, although sometimes I would play Tetris or Super Mario for a long time on my old Nintendo too).
TikTok is very dangerous. It is like your brain is a lump of clay, and you are allowing one stranger after another to come in and sculpt on it for 90 seconds at a time. You don't remember the vast majority of the videos you see, but the effect of absorbing all of that information remains inside you. And how many hours are you letting people do this to you? And how many years have you let it go on? How many videos do you think you've seen over that time, and how many do you actually remember? These are very unsettling questions. But someone who is really addicted to TikTok has already gotten bored and gone back to it for more. I'm so glad I never got into that. It's not worth it.
From day one I knew social media was a problem. They keep me roasting about it, even with all the proof that came out. It's just toxic. Especially for women. They grow up and think even more there is always better out there. Self doubt and self harm are rampant.
I used social media almost daily. But now that I deleted it, I became much more happy. I also noticed, that I am more joyfull about the little thing. Because all of a sudden, going to things like Ikea became intresting, and fun. I also became more realaxed and my attention to ceartain task got way better. So deleting social media was the best thing to do.
I cut down on socials after pandemic just because of the reasons explained in the video during the first 3 minutes..I had and I have low self esteem but more precisely I couldn't bear to be looked down on and to comparing myself to other people on Instagram in particular..I got off Instagram in June 2020 namely after a ghosting..and that was the worst..I still can't find a reason to open the account anew even though I feel really cut off...
I saw the clear destruction of all this and intentionally never got into it. People are definitely at least a little more stupid than before there was all this. RUclips’s been plenty fine for looking up diy, educational or entertainment and even that’s not something I even use super regularly.
We see more images in one day than a person in the Middle Ages in his whole life. That is tiring. Scrolling on the phone we have to make decisions all the time. We choose when and where to click to. This is exhausting the brain. And our attention span has become much shorter. Reading a book has become more difficult for most people.
Because of the like system that is not really private it’s the biggest reason I don’t enjoy Facebook. I want to keep it for myself just like RUclips can
I spent more time on social media last year, and I already feel the difference. Ever since I got myself a cellphone, I actually feel less intelligent. I went from no cellphone for 10 years to having a cellphone and I prefer not having a cellphone. And everyone always wants to text 24h7, which I don't do, but when you don't text a lot some get angry. I can't stand my cellphone and I can't stand social media.
It has been ok I think.... Then short form content came. RUclips was my safe space in social media but its algorithm is now Tiktok like. It's good because small creators can now grow better in Yt if they have good retention in video but it feels so random. Also shorts, i want to disable it badly but I cant. Before when I quit social media youtube is not in that group. Now youtube became like them. :(
There I was, wasting 2 days on writing my own module for generating x509 certificates because all the existing out-of-the-box solutions were crappy at best, I got tired, decided to take a 10 minute break. And then the internet decided I spend too much time online. I am RUINING MY BRAIN!!! So drastic.
A lot of teenagers now days are illiterate.. screen use and social media has everything to do with this sadly. There is also virtual autism. Which I have experienced when I was using my phone too much when I was younger.
I think if self regulated, youtube can be beneficial with all the free education on here. That said I’ve also learned how to tell real from fake. Don’t put all your stock into what you learn here. Go out in the world and verify it. Be very deliberate. Scrolling on any app is terrible for you.
In my opinion, the problem isnt social media. Its the lack of education surrounding this topic. Personally i know that i am addicted to it, even though i cant identify with the lifestyle we are living with social media. In my opinion there should be a age restriction similar to other addictive substances like alcohol and tobacco. This way we might be able to educate younger generations about the risks and advantages.
I sit in a coffee shop either alone or with a friend and I frequently will see up to ten to fifteen people all on their phone whilst waiting for their coffee. Wouldn't it be lovely if instead they could start a conversation with another. This is not going to end well for this world. Consumption, excess, greed and out of control capitalism is heading us towards a future that looks very bleak. It actually frightens me.
I started noticing that pattern of behavior in 2020 and I got off of all social media(besides RUclips) it was definitely making me feel depressed at times. I started educating myself about the world instead. Best move I've ever made
Yes. Doing productive things makes me feel indescribable peaceful
I did it similar to you
Love that, I have had much more time in my life to exercise, cook and consume educational content since I deleted my social media. I thought it was my job taking up my time but it was my social media addiction
Good for you my friend. Same I think
It’s like if I don’t have social media I don’t exist…
But my mental health is better without social media
“It’s like if you don’t have social media you don’t exist”
(That was deep)
Same.
It drive me nuts.
I avoid social media like the plague since I'm already addicted to RUclips, good thing the addiction spreads to informative videos so at least I can learn.
Me too
Good thing RUclips made education addicted. Hopefully that’s I’m done the damage done by school.
I use yt on gray mode and 30 minutes a day so i I'm not getting effected as I feel normal and healthy
I use the comments section of yt too much
Same here
I used to avoid TikTok and Instagram before. But now even non toxic platforms like RUclips or Pinterest have become rly overwhelming as well. So now i have to not use my phone all together:')
I never downloaded TikTok and deleted my Snapchat...no desire whatsoever
RUclips is just as toxic when ya start to get deeper in it
I never have social media in my life. As a man born in the 90s I'm still stuck in my old ways.
So? It's a good choices
How on earth did u manage to do that? Or did you had it but got rid of social media?
You’re on RUclips…that is in fact, social media.
I never signed up for anything either, other than RUclips for work related video’s. No social media for me. I never felt left out or feel I know less.
Yes but everyone knows it's not in the same vain as FB, Insta, X etc. Although the shorts they have now are not making it any better.@@drizzle452
Hey adhd here what you do for apps like Instagram?
But it would be a blessed because U actually think more critical in order to survive, I wonder if the others feels the same, they look okay with all these stuff happening
If you can deleting all social media (including RUclips) from your phone, and making your phone as boring as possible is key. If you have to access RUclips, only access it on a separate computer. I separate apps with an iPad and keep my iPhone as boring as possible, but if you can stick with just have a boring phone with no social media, and a computer for everything else (work, school, youtube), that would be best.
And next you delete android or IOS and you are free again for real communication outside the electronically generated brainfog ;)
I had 16 apps, now only 5, and thats enuff. The most important app is the browser.
You too pretty to be worried about tic TOC dear. Come over to muscle shoals Alabama and we'll take the boat out on the lake and do some skiing! U will forget ur phone
It's just sad man. Can't imagine how life is going to be like for the kids growing up right now and down the line.
I honestly think when our generation gets older, we are going to see an epidemic of people with dementia and eye problems from decades of looking at screens.
It scares me to think about it.
All this shit hasn’t happened to me, im 15 been on social medias for like 8 years. I only use youtube and snapchat
I agree with this 100%.
Great point. I fully agree with your statements
Well said 💯👏
Sharp thinking, the Last point actually pretty sad because I see it happening with my own eyes., its sad reality but guess as a family we supposed to get back to our morals value of life
It also ruins our dopamine system, we get flooded and with it in ways we aren’t meant to be and it’s just like how drug abuse works, a really vicious cycle. I agree a lot with all your points!
It’s funny to remember back to health class, when the teacher stressed the fact that drugs hijacked our dopamine award system so we feel good..we feel happy. Who knew social media would work that same way??
Social media = drugs is confirmed
Facts it’s the devil threw a computer screen
I get bored a little easier, but I sure enjoy music a lot more
but im only stressed when on social media. like ONLY
I TRY TO LISTEN TO MUSIC TOO BUT sometimes I dread listening to it all the time. I can't believe social media did this to me
yes we can be more mindful with our day to day lives...go on long walks and appreciate nature and the little things
I agree. It’s boredom that has preceded my most creative times.
Is he on instagram?
Yes he is. dr.sporessss
Can Dr. sporessss send to me in UK?

Depends on how it's used.
They never knew a life without it
reduced attention span is a such a real and massive issue
I remember these debates in school as well.
It’s still the problem, it’s part of the whole egg of yolk and white and shell of privacy, control, and societal breakdown.
Talking to people in person and making a genuine connection is far more addicting. It’s like a whole body high vs just a mind high 👍🏻
You are a 16 years old youtuber
What’s your point
Think if u continued from 16 years
Okay i agree with you on most points it rots our brains and creates such a strong group think people don’t think for themselves anymore.
RUclips is my exception. Because there are a lot of brilliant minds here and fascinating knowledge
Man social media platforms is the devil
This video made me stop using social media
In 2018 I got super disciplined and stayed off social (except youtube for educational stuff only) and it made a BIG difference in my length of time being able to stay focused when reading. Socials to me are vanity/ego magnifiers with people who post extensive negative memes for relativity’s sake, not realizing what it does to their subconscious
I also noticed that
I didn't have all the science down, but I intuitively knew social media was affecting me psychologically in a very negative way, which is why my Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts were all deleted back in January 2021.
The internet has definitely gone from a tool and casual fun to a near necessity and that’s a shame
I recommend a Windows 10 for that old feeling of surfing the internet

I’ve smoked and quit cigarettes
But the most disgusting vile addiction to kerb was social media - TikTok especially- 6 fucking months, 6 months and I felt human again.
Grueling process but I would do it again, if it even took a year to get my soul back.
To be able to sit, and just be content - holy shit it’s a feeling I can’t describe, it’s the feeling that I’d been searching for my whole life / that kid feeling where life is novel and fresh - new things interest you, your mind connects ideas and day dreams are vivid complex and interesting
It’s the feeling these pharma companies were trying to sell me with their SSRIs and adderal.
I honestly don't miss anything about it.
how does this youtube channel and this video not get so many views, subs, and likes... you deserve more bro !
same question
I think that social media, texting etc is the #1 cause that this new generation of kids have so much social anxiety. They don't know how to deal with people in the (real world) so to speak, unlike people that are older such as myself at 62 years of age.
I never understood what people saw in social media in the first place. You can learn new things watching videos, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are straight up useless.
This guy has enough guts to put this on social media.
Even though I only use RUclips (started at like 4 yo so yes very young) I've noticed a big shift in my watching habits for example backthen I used to watch 100 video series all are an average of 20 minutes and somehow had the ability to feel the clickbaity and lying coming through the screen like I subconsciously knew if someone's information was trustworthy or not, also i mostly watched a lot of long videos from a few youtubers and slowly widened my circle of interests I also remember hating most short form content(especially tiktok cuz it's the stupidest
and cringiest thing I've ever seen)and what I considered "old people content" so anything from Facebook or Twitter but after switching to English RUclips I've started slowly watching whatever even if I mildly like it and watching RUclips shorts while also being impatient and getting quickly board if a video is more than 7 minutes and I'm not as attached to the youtubers I watch anymore I just kinda watch the videos and move on
and also I remember when I used to watch Minecraft videos and it was only me and the video that's the only things that exist while now I can't even watch something without noticing the things outside the screen
I'm still at the part where I hate short content, I'm gonna take your comment as a heads up since being bored at 7+ minutes is completely foreign to me and I like my attention span.
It can even disrupt sleep patterns
*me at 6:00 in the morning after not going to bed watching this*
I dropped out of all social media platforms and it was the best thing I’ve done for myself. Dunno if YT counts. But I don’t have “friends” here.

Lack of self awareness is the problem. A cornucopia of damaging habits is but one symptom.
Yup, excess buzzwords in social media leaves me SPEECHLESS! SPEECHLESS!! This video CHANGES EVERYTHING! EVERYTHING!!
I've never signed up to sinkholes (as I call them). In fact I got a flip phone three weeks ago. So far I've got no intention of backtracking.
I'm really pleased you've found a medication that works better for you. I have a relative with this condition so I'm interested, too.
to keep it short, social media has rather had a positive impact in my case.
Lots of good, educative information out there & abilty to meet interesting people all around the world. (just have to avoid the not-so-obvious time pit traps that have near to 0 actual "worth-your-time" content and spend time with your close ones in REAL LIFE as well)
pphew, couldn't really word it out that short/well but hopefully you get the point, social media CAN be really useful as long as you know how to use it😅
And as always, thank you Clemens for your videos😃
@@efe75623 I dont get why everyone makes such a big deal about not meeting people face to face like you were able to do that this time two years ago

I think this video took me over the edge. I feel a nose bleed coming on.
THIS video needs to be part of junior high and high school curriculum.
That’s the ugly part that needs to go
Tbh, I post IG Stories, and message people on social media, but I really don't use any social media regularly other than RUclips
I believe we should stop both social medias and cellular phones. Or at least smartphones. I’m giving myself a couple of years cuz of my job, otherwise I would to it now. I remember being better without social medias and without phones
Social media is a great way to keep oneself occupied
"The last generation.." Those words were very profound to me.
Also I noticed most of my classmates falling for the "likes measure how good you are instead of the thing you posted" trap like no one gives an s about online anyways so why do you care when you don't even give something of value
Bro youtube is a social media and i am addicted to it.
I have a school prodject and this helped me alot, thanks.
Thank a lot for some informations about s.m , This is usefull vidio i've ever seen today 😊
IMPORTANT!!! This is what is wrong with everyone, u need to revise this vid every week . IMPORTANT!!!
Because of the like system that is not really private it’s the biggest reason I don’t enjoy Facebook. I want to keep it for myself just like RUclips can
People will eventually develop a resistance to it, but not everyone is able to do so specially kids.
Nowadays it feels like RUclips is stealing ao much attention and time i just can't get a hold of it
Deleting facebook 4 years ago has been a great decision on my part. No instagram, no tiktok, no FB, no nothing. Just youtube for audio.
Social Media can be dangerous.
Notice how all the video posts about social media addiction was less than 15 minuites name one documentary on television addiction...........wow!
I dated a music video girl that would wake up in the middle of the night and scroll through Instagram or TikTok. Shit blew my mind
I think if self regulated, youtube can be beneficial with all the free education on here. That said I’ve also learned how to tell real from fake. Don’t put all your stock into what you learn here. Go out in the world and verify it. Be very deliberate. Scrolling on any app is terrible for you.
5:06. IMPORTANT !!!
Its call get rid of smart phones and social media
To begin with, not many of us understood the meaning of "If you don't pay for the product, you are the product." Well, now a lot of people do.
Social media is my addiction for years and especially RUclips since the 2005
except youtube and what's app i did't use any social media //.....
Thanks to my addiction, I have found this video
Egads…! I have been using social media all wrong! I use it almost exclusively for reseach and learning.
Remember before internet when they said TV will rot your brain?
Here's the same argument, just repackaged...
"Too Much Information" ~ The Police (1981)
