When I had fungus gnats on my Sarracenia I did three things: I used a potato slice on top of the soil to attract any larva, for two days. I got mosquito dunks and broke a small piece into the water tray. And I also put a nice layer of silica sand on top as a top layer.
@TheKraken21 For Fungus gnats use 1/4 of a "Mosquito Dunk" in your watering can/bottle and in your water trays. It kills the larvae in the soil and water. Use sticky traps for the adults.
Some people say neem smells nutty. I think it smells like an Asian chicken stock seasoning powder I buy. I’ve actually been wearing it on my body for bed bugs, may as well stop them from reproducing if they are going to bite. If you do this, when you wash and dry your clothes, everything will smell like it through permeation. It’s amazing for the skin though!
Thanks... great info... I actually used the product least advised... the soap on a cape sundew. I had to battle aphids for possibly a year using that. I think partially because I was so worried about harming the plant. Finally I was going to give up and super soaked the plant with the spray a couple times. So far the aphids have been gone for a good month or so. As an aside... the plant has actually been growing in only water. So, no soil to factor into the mix.
@SarraceniaNorthwest how much neem oil should we use for Venus flytrap? I have just bought a bottle of pure neem oil and I don't know how much should be diluted in rain water and if dosing depends on the problem like insects or fungus
Thanks for watching. I need to redo this video. Hopefully we can get to it by the end of summer. A typical dosage is 2 tablespoons per gallon of water, but that dosage will depend on the strength of the concentration. You should always follow the directions provided by the manufacturer.
Is smelly soil due to mold? I have a Giant Venus Fly trap I bought from you guys a while ago and has done great! Only recently have I noticed the blackening of traps and leaves as well as a slow down in growth. I've also noticed a type of smell coming from the pot itself. Any guesses or help tips from you guys would be much appreciated. Also, how can you tell if you have a fungus or mold infection?
Good video! Thanks for what too, and what not to do. (And if you think Neem smells good, you are either fortunately, or using something with other things added. Cause pure Neem oil smells to me like rotten peanut butter and garbage.)
Can you spray the imidacloprid in the water for pitcher plants? I have exyra moths in one of my pitchers i had to cut it off unfortunately. But im worried about further infestations in other pitchers. I would like to spray something inside the water of the pitchers to stop them
I don't have any experience with that. The most we can tell you is to spray it directly on the plant. As always, follow the directions provided by the manufacturer.
*UPDATE: Rose and Flower does in fact contain Imidacloprid* I'm not sure if my claim was looking at the wrong product or if I was looking at an expired outdated Bayer brand (before the name change to Bio Advanced) or what the situation was, but I was very confident my original comment in 2018 WAS accurate when I posted it. I remember looking at the ingredients labels. If I was overlooking or looking at the wrong product, then I apologize. (Old outdated inaccurate comment below) Mistake in video. you talk about Imidacloprid, the tobacco pesticide, but that is in Tree and Shrub, NOT Rose and Flower that you show. Also I think the Tree and Shrub has fertilizer, so you would need another source.
@@joshs3775 When I search for it online now, I see that it does indeed contain Imidacloprid Either they changed it, or the specific one they sold local to me, was different or I was somehow mistaken. It is common for places local to me to not sell specific things I want or to sell a specific variation that is inferior, but looks nearly identical and is supposed to do the same type of thing. Also the company used to be Bayer and rebranded to BioAdvanced and may have changed some things and I may have been seeing an old discontinued product that may have used something different. Thank you (and the other person) for correcting my outdated (or just wrong) information. Thanks for making the internet a better place.
help i have these carnivorous plants that have these small white worm like insects. i noticed them when i was watering my plants and they were everywhere.
I have a newbie question. My problem is I live in Phils. I am not able to get that kind of pesticide. What other options I can use? But i can get a hodl of neem oil. Can i use that. Also can I use castille oil?
ok , but what about mealy bugs, they seem to come back time after time in short period, even after 4 treatments at 4 day intervals. ive used the bayer advanced rose care just like the one in the video, . do mealy bugs need something more harsh , if they are in and around the crown and down in the soil does the soil need replacing , ive unpotted and thoroughly cleaned the roots and crown with a strong blast of water, then used the bayer advance treatment to a couple that appeared very infested and then days later i notice the little monsters again, do i need to treat the entire growing area? i grow 1 plant to one pot and have a couple hundred plants, am i fighting a loosing battle, i hate mealys, I had aphids once but they seemed to be easily eliminated with a couple treatments.
Don't overlook those beneficial predatory bugs too! Aphidioletes aphidimyza is a great one for aphids. Persimilis mites and stethorus punctillum beetles are great for spider mites Stratiolaelaps scimitus is a great all around mite for soil borne pests like fungus gnats and part of the thrip life cycle
@theknowbody I wouldn't know what rotten peanut butter smells like. It lasts for decades and I use it too quickly. I use the same neem product Jeff shows in the video which is Green Light brand. It's 70% neem and I think the 30% is mineral oil but it doesn't say and I don't think mineral oil would make anything "Hideous" smell like oranges. My friend that uses the same product also says it smells like oranges.
What the stupid point to post a useless video, that shows either bottle, that can't be recognized because of 360p quality? Add the names, or links to Insecticides you used in the description, or pinned comment please, to make either sense to your video.
1. Video is 11 years old 2. He mentioned all the safe and the non safe insecticides formulas, you should be able to get any of them even is it's not the same brand. Try having a little criteria, it won't hurt.
Imidacloprid: 30days
Permethrin: contact, 3-4weeks
Pyrethrin: contact, 24hrs
Neem Extract: contact, washes off quickly with rain, bad odor
AVOID INSECTICIDAL SOAPS

Thanks for the informative videos. It’s been an invaluable tool for me in my carnivorous plant exploits.
Very helpful this man now's what he's doing, thank you,
@Sarracenia Northwest What about spider mites on a cape sundew. Should I spray the soil as well?.
Thanks for watching. You can spray the soil, too. There's no harm in doing so.
your videos are a treasure, thank you

What brand is the pyrethrin?
What is the brand of the first bottle being used?
I was wondering that as well (and hoping he would say....any of the brands actually...but he didn't. Maybe some copyright thing??
do you need to rinse the vfts after using neem oil?
Can all of these products be bought at Home Depot or Lowe's? My cp seedlings are being attacked by fungus gnat larva :(
Very good info! Thanks for that!

Are they in the soil? And how small?
Maybe they are fungus gnat larva?
Great information.
thank you excellent information for my VFTs!
Excellent and very informative. How about tau-fluvalinate & myclobutanil? Is that safe for Venus flytraps?

Can sundews get infected with spider-mites?
Thank you so much for this!
Thank you for this. Just found thrips on my beautiful pitcher plant. Needless to say, they are in for war 😠
Can I use hydrogen peroxide, if yes please tell me the ratio of water and hydrogen peroxide.

Imidacloprid, not what he shows.

@laalaalinda2946 were you able to find something what works with mealies? I've spotted a few on my sarcennia. 😔
Using Ortho 3 in 1 to treat carnivorous vivarium. Hopefully it doesn't harm carnivorous plants.
Can the first one (Bayer Rose and Flower) be used for preventative? Or should it only be used if the plant is being attacked? Thanks
Jay P Imidacloprid is not in Rose and Flower, he shows the wrong one.
