Andrew, I actually appreciated your deep dive, and science basics behind the Nixie tube. This coupled your love of watches and your SciFi writing skills together. Keep up the good work!
I got the NIWA Lunokhod, which uses VFD tubes rather than Nixie tubes. It is significantly smaller and more wearable and is a visually stunning novelty watch. If you want a Nixie tube timepiece, I'd recommend their tabletop clock. But be forewarned. NIWA is a small operation. It took almost a year for my watch to be delivered, and customer communication is not their strong suit. But the price is ridiculously reasonable, and if you want to have a conversation starter on your wrist, this is it.
In the ‘70s, i had the fun in using a shared calculator. Add, subtract, multiply (not divide), and you had to share with the eight other users of the calculator. The calculator used nixi tubes to display the digits. Way cool. Just the ticket for after hours college recreation.
I have the smaller NIWA watch with the meteorite back and it is a wonderful watch. Battery does not last long as I am always looking at it! Not the best for telling time, it is accurate however need to figure out what tube lights up in the row of tubes. Great for conversation starters and keeping me distracted during meetings!! Great video!!
Came here to watch a video of a cool watch. Ended up learning more than i did when taking my electrician's education. Well done as always, Andrew. You're the GOAT!
On the wrist it may be as practical as a bow without an arrow but I kind of love it, no, admire it, Back in the 80's I used test kit with these little Nixie tubes and I found them fascinating back then, I don't think I've seen one in 3 decades. Very well explained in your usual entertaining way that somehow makes some sort of sense so someone and maybe even me. Keep up the great work Andrew.
@@niwatches isn't it concerning to you that they didn't receive it for 10 months? Wouldn't it have been a better response for customer retention to actually deliver the watch?
bkuwan You are so well-informed about luxury watches. You've obviously done your due diligence and the comparison to the US is very informative...because of course, I live in New York. thank you very much
I have this model watch in purple titanium and only wore it once it is a very cool and unique watch, but the size is gigantic and setting it with a magnet doesn't helps. The watch looks like a power ranger toy if you have a small wrist like myself.
Niwa was going to be my second and prime nixie watch to buy until the Cathode Corner version came back in stock right as I was about to hit order. A year on it’s become my daily wearable due to its reliability and durability. Niwa’s Lunokhod Neptune edition I’m hoping to get soon for an even more unconventional display format. Something about ionising gas to tell the time is just so satisfying
That is a lot of research for a 15min video. I came here for mind numbing quips, and ended learning something. I am inclined to give this video a thumbs down, if so much of the information didn’t go over my head, which enabled me to fulfill my mind numbing requirements for today. Great video
Passing over the example of a valve (tube;¬) amplifier and choosing a McIntosh (!) would be a crime. Pure class, Andrew. I can only wonder what you would put with that Amp... Maybe Spatial Audio OB speakers? Thanks for making us smile, as usual. Greetings
I enjoyed the science digression, but I've spent far too much time on thinking about whether the oxygen wouldn't be _reduced_ rather than oxidized. Because its oxidation state would usually change from 0 to -2. But then again, I can't remember all details from my studies about photochemistry which is a whole different beast. Just not sure if that would play a role or if I am overthinking. I guess I still haven't thought about it enough. Cheers.
Tubes/valves are so sick to look at in operation. A delightful vestige, and reminder of of the past and the routes we had to take technologically to get to where we are now. I’m a guitarist so I have a certain reverence and affinity for them. I always wanted a tube clock, but I’ve always been worried about maintenance. I’ve had tubes crack from the difference in humidity from one room to the other, so to have a nixie tube wrist watch would stress me
Your a qualified civil engineer, very polite, but it would appear your skill set extends to a beautiful explanation of electronics and quantum entanglement. Great watch, great video 👍👊⌚️
“Why glass? Well because light would be difficult to see through metal!”
Me: laughing in Braille….

Me: Let's watch a watch video to take a break from my engineering job!
The watch video:
Lovely-witty explanations as always
As a watchmaker who also builds nixie clocks, I approve of this video.
Have I missed a nixie video?!

Love the deep dive into electricity and displays! Still remember old Nixie tube calculators.
Me: Can I have a watch I can’t read, can’t explain and looks like I should be wearing tnt like a cartoon? NIWA: Hockey puck or pill holder sir?
"Even I'm not listening to me" at 6:40 🤣
It took me 5 attempts to pause it so I could read that
Lol had to run that back as well

I put it in order, and 10 months later, still no feedback, no order reply, and I told them I needed my down money back.
Write to them. I found 3 emails from niwa in a spam folder. Received mine 2 weeks ago.
We do a refund for all who claim it. Please contact us if you didn't receive it.
@@niwatches the problem is I never get a confirmation email and no contact. I have to email myself 10 months later.

That was a pretty good explanation of how neon works 👍
I bought one the last time you reviewed this…its pretty damn cool and a conversation starter 😉
But, but I was listening!! Thanks for the egg! Had to work to retrieve it. Well done!
So glad someone finally covered this. So cool.
I've got a Niwa Lunokhod which is a bit more... challenging to read. But it's a lot of fun, and is at least a wearable size.
another top-notch video. I'm glad I subscribed recently, good content!

"Pip-boy levels of wrist presence" is going into annals of legendary watch commentary.

So good I might have to buy the t-shirt. And there is one.
I placed an order last month for Carina Nebula. Can't wait until it ships!
how do you read the minutes and hours?
Looks like when you rotate it toward you, it flashes hour, minutes, and seconds in sequence.
Battery probably doesn't last long enough to show either 😂😂😂
@@JustMeTalking 3 months on a 3 hour charge?
I would love a pocket watch version of this. Preferably in a brass clamshell.
I saw a Nixie watch donkey's years ago, about the same time the Devontread Steampunk, some famous film director had one.
I've built a couple Nixie clocks a few years ago, recently out of curiosity I priced the tubes I used in my largest clock, at $200 a tube, good grief!
One of the best physics lesson I ever had.
Great video!
You should have explained how to read the time maybe?
Yep it worked…Even I’m not listening to me! 🤦♂️🤣

Cool tech. Interesting video
that was a lot of fun thank you!
You should have explained how to read the time.
i can listen to his voice for hours
Cool. How do you wind it though?
I want the desktop clock version!
It is right and fitting that green neon signs contain Krypton.
I definitely prefer it to the one you reviewed a year ago which was extremely hard to read.
How do you tell the time on that stimbunk watch ? 😂😅
I got a NIWA, bought in 2001, wear it most days, very happy. Also the NIWA unlike other Nixie watches doesn't try to look like a prop from Fallout

Benedict Cumberbatch talking watches is my new favourite thing.
I have a nixie tube clock on my desk and it's so pretty. Got mine from Nixieshop.
They should make this into a clock!
I clicked for the science lesson and received a watch review as a bonus! Thanks Andrew!
Rechecked half way through to see whether I had selected a Brian Cox video.
A little unnerved by the hipster caressing the Edison bulb……😺
How do you tell the time?
How on earth does someone tell the time with this watch?
Super interesting stuff but I admit I fell asleep a few minutes in. I’ll try watching again.
This is way more science than I anticipated
When people are saying #mamacoo is a better option,I very much agree!
I built a Nixie tube clock from a kit, was brilliant. Looked great on my bar. Spilling liquid on one is not recommended…
Have you looked at the Sequent watches. It is probably the closest I will get to considering a smart watch.
Bravo! Very James Burke like. More like this please??
Got tubes in my stereo, I'll keep it at that.
"Even I'm not listening to me"!!
Which nixie are you reviewing
A genuinely accessible primer. Some of your very best work.
I'm surprised they felt compelled to stay with the cylindrical case, and to put the incongruous carbon fibre back on. An interesting oddity.
Excellent!
Great watch
ngl my eyes were starting to glass over a little bit at 6:40
Not that black looks bad on you but you should try different colors, try lighter ones for instance
Years ago i bought the original Nixie watch from cathode corner, same watch Steve Wozniak owns… if you want the original.
mamacoo is best watch factory!!!
This was fantastic.
I hate you. The watch is too bigger, too thick, but now that I know it exists at that price I want one. I'll never use it but I want one 😂
I really didn’t understand any of that but cool watch👍
I think The Ghoul has one.
Security, that guy has a bomb on his wrist!!!
Blakes7 vibes. There's a gem of a series ripe for a remake. Amazon? Netflix? Come on!
But I was listening to you... That is until I had to go and find out what that random frame message said.
I’ve got a headache Mr Morgan. 😁😁
Was this a colab with Steve Mould???
just bought it
Awesome !!😎
Your a qualified civil engineer, very polite, but it would appear your skill set extends to a beautiful explanation of electronics and quantum entanglement. Great watch, great video 👍👊⌚️
I file this one under "What's the point?"
Thanks for triggering my high school science class root cause PTSD issues.
Does it leave grade two burn marks on your wrist... if not, why not...
I wouldn't buy this one, but tthey also have one beautiful table watch that looks killer and you don't have to worry about battery
After watching this video i have only one question.... What the hell is a Japanese pillow???
I was dazzled at the skill involved in getting 2 penis enlargers into a watch! A true marvel of science and engineering 😁
But when you Order the watch ! , You Can’t SEE The Watch 🤔!.
Love it, but get the feeling that every time I look at it, it will remind me of failing A-level physics. Just like this video did.
A tad more readable than the Lunokhod
Did I miss something? You only see seconds ? Where is the hour? Minutes? 🤷🏼♂️
Interesting
Yep, didn't get any of that.
Please never do this to us again 😂
Agreed.
Nice job showing a Mac amp
