- U.S Navy Fighter Squadron 14 (VF-14) "TOPHATTERS", and flying the F-14A Tomcat back in 1999, deployed to and flew combat in 2 separate theatres, Operations Allied Force and Southern Watch, during the same deployment. Shown here is a squadron produced production, from November '99, that looks back on those missions from both the air and ground crew's perspectives.

During my time with the RNLAF 306 TFRS, we hosted them during, as I recall it right, the excercise Volkit.. The thing I remember the most, were those huge Tophatters badge they were wearing.. Dang were those out of size, but hey, it worked.. 😉 🤣
Had a friend of mine that got to go on that det bring me back a bottle of Jack daniels back to the boat ..LOL Not many folks have drank JD while on a warship in the middle of the sea..LOL
It's so weird for me to see our birds with the 200 series aircraft numbers. When I was in,vf-14 aircraft were always numbered in the 100 series, vf-32 always had the 200 series.
To this day, I still can't believe the tomcats were replaced by the hornets. Sure, the f-14 A-D required multiple man-hours of maintenance, especially at sea.
Replacing the tomcats with hornets is like replacing professional race cars with "sporty " looking Toyota camrys. Sure, the Toyota is more reliable, cheaper, and uses less fuel but race engineered cars will literally run circles around the sportiest camry. Such a sad day when all the F-14 tomcats were replaced with inferior Performance hornets.
Nothing beats a swing- wing for low speed agility at wings full forward and high speed air ripping with wings fully swept back, the epitome of aerodynamics .
Too bad Grumman and Toyota failed to create a joint venture to design/ manufacture the ultimate tomcat. Superior performance coupled with modular , minimal maint, max durability/reliability, consistent quality at most effective price.

@@Tomcat71 , we missed each other by several years. I also was in airframes but at sea I was a flight deck troubleshooter. Our flight deck vests with checkerboards started out bright white but soon turned gray and black from all the grease ,hydraulic fluid and other stains.
I was in 80-84 , during Reagan's first term.
