  • In today's video, The Powell Group ventures to our favorite Ghost Town in Owhyee County: Silver City! We love exploring around Idaho and found this gem located only two hours from Boise!
Just 2 hours by car South of Boise, the Queen of Idaho ghost towns awaits your visit.
In the Spring of 1863, a miner named Michael Jordan led a group of prospectors south from Placerville (near Idaho City) south across the Boise Basin and up the Owyhee Mountains up to what became known as Jordan Creek in search of placer gold deposits and the mythical Lost Blue Bucket Mine.
In 1864 rich silver-gold deposits were discovered on War Eagle Mountain to the East and the first assays of those mines reported values richer than those of the legendary Comstock Lode in Nevada.
The prospectors on War Eagle Mountain discovered over 300 ledges and filed on all of them; the first mills started crushing ore in the Fall of 1864 and Silver City was born.
At it’s peak, Silver City was a real town that had 82 stamps in operation between all the mills, generating over $700,00 per week. It had 6 general stores, 8 saloons and a brewery, a Miner’s Hospital and all the other services required by such a settlement. It also had the first telegraph in the Territory, coming up from Winnemucca, NV and then heading into Boise City.
The Idaho Hotel dates from 1863 with a large expansion in 1866; with its 50 rooms it was one of the finest hotels in the Territory for years.
The two story schoolhouse dates to 1892.
The original Our Lady of Tears Catholic Church was built in 1869. The second iteration was built in 1882 but collapsed under the weight of snow in the early 1930s. The current church was purchased from the Episcopalians in 1933; the building was originally erected in 1898.
Five miles West of Silver City you will find the remains of Dewey Camp, Col. William Dewey set up shop there in 1896. There are mill tailings, some remains of wooden structures and the walls of a concrete building still there.
Drive West for another 4 miles and you will find the remains of DeLamar. The ruins of Joseph DeLamar’s 20 Stamp mill are clearly visible on the other side of Jordan Creek as you drive by. There are a few structures still standing in the area, but everything on the far side of the creek is posted against trespassing.
DeLamar had purchased a number of claims and combined them all into the Wilson Mine; the ore was extracted via 7 miles of adits; by 1896 they had mined over $6M from the mine.
The town of DeLamar was situated along both sides of Jordan Creek and had a population of about 950 in 1896; that’s hard to believe with as little as you can see today. There was a 30 room hotel, a bunkhouse for miners and nearly 100 houses; they had electric lights, telephones and telegraph.

    ***Please don’t forget! ***
    1. The road to Silver City is closed from Nov. 1 to the following Memorial Day weekend each year. Call the Owyhee Sheriff’s Dispatch at 208-495-1154 to ensure the road is open and passable before you start your trip.
    2. There is no fuel, food, water or repair services on this route; make sure your vehicle is in good running order as you will be doing some serious climbing, especially if you come up from the Treasure Valley side. Bring plenty of food and extra water with you in case you break down and need to spend the night on the road.
    3. Please post any questions you have about the area.
    4. Last but not least, there are over 1100 active mining claims in this area; know how to recognize a claim marker so someone doesn’t show up and ask why you are on their mining claim if you are exploring in the area.
