Will the 'gamble-gate' scandal obliterate the Tories forever? | Pod Save The UK

- With just one week to go until the election, Rishi Sunak’s chances of avoiding a landslide defeat might have just got slimmer - all thanks to “gamble-gate”.
Nish and Coco are joined by political correspondent Liz Bates to discuss the betting scandal plaguing the government. Sunak vowed to lead the world in “standards of decency” but has been very slow to act. Might this mean a complete wipeout for them?
But that’s not all the scandals this week. Education secretary Gillian Keegan has repeatedly used a claim about children being taught there are “72 genders” to back up government plans to ban schools from talking about gender identity. Nish, Coco and Liz investigate her so-called 'sources'.
And from politicians playing Minecraft to the Reform UK Party singing the Spice Girls, the WTF moments are multiplying. Nish, Coco and Liz dissect their favourites from the week.

Always, ALWAYS happy to see Liz Bates join Coco and Nish!
Same!
As an American, I can't wait for you to vote out Sunak. What a raging tool he is.
I'd like to know what conservatives would think about if my little brothers say at school they have an older trans brother and if they would be banned from mentioning that 😂 it's ridiculous
They're worried the Tories being unpopular will create a 1 party state, maybe fighting to retain first past the post wasn't a great idea eh?
They're fundamentally unserious and treat the public with utter contempt. They speak as if words meant nothing and they can just bend them to their will.
I also don't remember any concerns from the Tories when they won an 80 seat majority 🤔
Keir Starmer gave someone a sentence for stealing a bottle of water during the London riots... Maybe we shouldn't valourise that part of his résumé?
I can never understand why a country's leader should consider they should have sympathy when they find themselves in a difficult and unexpected situation. They volunteered. They stood in front of the electorate and claimed to be the absolutely best person to lead the country over the next 4-5 years, a future which has NO GUARANTEES! Anything could happen and they consider themselves to be the best person in the entire country to face whatever comes and deal with it to the benefit of everyone. On a local level, MPs, too: they volunteer, considering themselves to be the best representative for the people in their constituency, whatever the future holds. So just get on with it. The future is going to spit out difficulties - always has, always will. If you can't stand up to the plate, get off the pitch!
Well... maybe they would garner some modicum of sympathy if they had useful policies and exhibited some sympathy and compassion, themselves, instead of being utter twats.
The big question is this: Will the Lib Dems win more seats than the Tories at the election? Numerous polls have suggested yes, numerous polls have suggested no. We won't know until election night.
If it does actually happen, it will be the end of the Tory party.
I agree if the Tories remain clearly in second place their chances of bouncing back, much as Labour have in this election cycle, is very real. Even with Lib dems narrowly in second the traditional default mindset and the distribution of Tory voters may be enough depending on their own behaviour and the ability of Ed Davey to steer clear of trouble. Practically, I think it will take two consecutive third place results or internal infighting and breakup to eliminate the Tories as a party of government for decades to come. I think that's possible
Demographics are against them - young (and even not so young) people are not voting Tory. As an opposition party they could adapt and find a way to appeal to right leaning younger people
As the third or fourth party, what can they offer?
As someone who's going to be voting Lib Dem, this is the most hopeful that I've felt about the party in years and years. I know that they're not going to win this time around, but there's a good chance they could be the opposition party when Labour beat the Tories into the dirt.
(Full disclosure, american, pretty far left). The Lib Dems do not at all excite me, but it's weird to read their platform and think "hey these policies sound like things people would want". If it's an accurate reflection of what that party really stands for, they seem much healthier as part of the national dealmaking than either of Labour or the Conservativse for the last 20 years.

Liz Bates Superstar. Knowledgeable, to the point and drawing attention effectively to real issues that matter.
And has a great sense of humor. Full package.
Glad to see Liz Bates back on the podcast. I find her knowledge and perspective very helpful in understanding the political world in the UK.
I mean, eff JKR.
Will somebody explain to me why political parties in the UK are kowtowing to JK Rowling?
@@KristineMaitland because she's very wealthy and has x number of followers on social media? Fuck knows. It's absurd.
@@KristineMaitland because she's a TERF and the majority of the British Press are TERF's so they continuously promote her as a political figure. She's also got a lot of people in the arts/celebrities defending her, claiming she's a victim.
It's sad but as a trans women who does postal voting I just couldn't convince myself in the end to vote Labour. Sadly in my local area a staunch Tory hot spot my vote is probably wasted without proportional representation.
I appreciate competition as much as most Americans, but UK Conservatives trying to keep up with our bottom-feeding GOP is just sad.
I mean, I don't know if the Tories are as unhinged as the Republican Party in the US, but considering some of the stuff I've heard that lot spout, that's not really saying a lot.
As has been oft-noted, gender is a social construct, whereas sex classification is firmly rooted in science...and science has made it clear unequivocally that sex is NOT binary (i.e., more than two categories exist, everyone cannot be slotted into one bin or the other).
Just the vast majority of people on Earth. Which doesn't at all mean we should pretend minorities don't exist - but it does mean that our policies and customs need to reflect these proportions, if they're going to be relevant to all.
That's precisely how they justified denying equal marriage @@1midnightfish
@@Aarenby Ahh, thanks for demonstrating how the debate on trans rights has become so toxic and extreme over the past few years.
Same sex marriage does not have any repercussions whatsoever on the rights, freedoms and safety of people in opposite-sex marriages (or those of heterosexual people in general), and there was never any indications that it would have. The implementation of trans rights in our deeply mysogynistic society does have potential implications for the rights, freedoms and safety of women and girls.
It doesn't have to be that way. It is possible for trans, intersex and non-binary people to have equal rights *and* for women to hold on the rights they have fought so hard for over decades and they carry on their fight for equal rights - which as we all know is far from over.
A reform candidate gets on stage, and says: I tell you what I want, what I `errr` really really want.... I WANT TO TRUMP!, I WANT TO TRUMP! , I WANT TO REALLY REALLY TRUMP!!!!!
Like a brother egging his sister on, Nish keeps poking at Coco with profanity 😂
Rapidly becoming my favourite podcast on youtube! 💚💚
I don't trust that the labour party will go beyond their manifesto. I also don't trust that Kier will keep any of his promises considering his track record of breaking promises to get what he wants.
same here so i'm voting green and as i don't trust lib dems just as much, due to their collaboration with the tory scumbuckets ,i cant in all good conscience vote for them
I just don't trust him or labour!!! Thrown out all the true Labour mp's and kept the tory ones
It's always a fun time when Liz Bates shows up... she's just delightful.
This is just a seemingly endless game of 'Will THIS actually, finally, do it?' It's like trying to find the bottom of Trump's barrel. It's farcical. In fact, throw a couple vicars accidently trapped in wardrobes (maybe Paula Vennels could stand in?) and you've got a good old fashioned hit for the summer.
But the Tories themselves? Not so much a hit as a splatter. I mean, if they were a dog we'd do the decent thing but obviously ...
I'm fed up now, this election is like watching my kids play monopoly,,, so gonna go and watch some funny cat clips !!! BTW Love Nish he makes me think n laugh
I'm going for 11 in the Nish fucks sweepstake for this episode
Spare me. (Giggle)
Ladbroks reported the tories you couldn’t make it up
Cannon Fodder candidate, interesting term for what is usually called something like a paperless candidate!!! I think I will adopt it the next council elections when I take on that role again :)
What a shambles.😂😂😂
Liz Bates: absolute star ⭐️
Love this show following from New Zealand
You guys are the best. Watching from the U.S.A.
I concur. Watching from Toronto, Canada.
Brilliant. Thank you for your allyship as always 🏳️⚧️✔️
I understand that the movement in the gambling markets was big enough for the Labour Party to start buying advertising space without any other corroborating evidence.
God if Keir did anything like that Minecraft video i would move to the UK immediately lol
I so look forward to this podcast every week, especially when Liz joins Nish and Coco. She’s such a great addition when she guests with our beloved hosts. Or should I say presenters?
Unless we come to grips with the climate, there very well may come a time when we will /have to/ make drastic changes to our lives. How do people not understand the cost of pushing these issues further into the future?
I suspect this has to do with how groups of people handle threats in general that require societel change. We're just super bad at it. We don't like thinking about existential threats. In the face of severe plagues, people usually make up insane conspiracy theories instead of sanely facing the threat.
I was taught about the greenhouse effect in science class as a young child in 1984. I've watched us to effective nothing about it for 40 years. I don't really this to change until lots of people are dying. Granted, that's already starting, but it's going to take a while to get bad enough, in my guesstimation.
Such a relief to hear someone talk about the fraud. Look at Cameron's compulsory tender, also. The worst of it has been baked into the system and normalised. Legalised crime.
Starmer was locking up kids for nothing during the riots and consistently pushed for harder sentences.
"The man with the least fun job in the western world" if you don't count whoever has to unblock the toilets in mar-a-lago.
UK: £20 bets by aides become a national scandal.
US: Supreme Court says a $13000 kickback to an elected mayor is totally fine.
Don't get me wrong, I mean, people placing bets based on inside information is bad, but like, shit, could you guys ship us some of that "taking corruption seriously" stuff across the pond?!?!
We don’t have enough to spare. As they said, billions of £ wasted on contracts to their mates (for equipping that wasn’t up to code) isn’t even being examined. I recommend the podcast called “British Scandal: Michelle Mone” for a bit more insight into that.
Absolutely LOVE Liz!
18:00 I think part of it, is that JK Rowling is the UK's 31st highest tax payer. Apparently paying 40m in tax. So that's a few schools gone if she decides to move her cash abroad.
Gauntlet thrown down, lets see Rishi Sunak dawning the Union Jack dress next !!
That panorama interview was utter dogshite. It was just right wing dog whistle after right wing dog whistle that just made me appreciate how the greens must be some of the most patient people in politics.
Adore the podcast and I have to say, all my favourite episodes seem to involve Liz Bates. If this were to become a permanent arrangement I would not be disappointed.
I'd so be an SNP cannon fodder candidate in north east England!
With brexit being the prequel to trump, I do see this election being hopefully our prequel for November
The JK meeting reminds me of Ed Milliband going to talk to Russel Brand before an election since Brand was wittering on trying to encourage people not to vote at all. I mean why bother? Pointless and dull so doesn't really work as an eye-catching stunt
Labour offering private briefings to TERFs is a bit naff.
Quality. Absolute quality. Love you guys :)
I heard Rishi has a poster of Paula Vennells on his wall, she is his inspiration.
They missed a trick really, they could've placed a huge bet then pledged the winnings to river shit removal
As I'm in Australia, these episodes pop up Friday mornings. And you know what? This has been a great way to start my Fridays every week for the last year or so.
Make the burgers smaller?
I hear you about the lack of attention paid to climate policies, Nish
That burger bit was like a Chris morris sketch
thank you
Can anyone explain why it's a good thing that betting on elections is legal? Seems like an open door for bad things happening.
Can we jumble up the name J K Rowling and form Lord Voldermort? Because i think we're there with this woman...
I'd like to see how you'd deal with David Lammy's echoing of Keir Starmer's nothingness compared to your deferential American colleague. Whenever the riots are mentioned I will forever remember he blamed them on the fact that you're not allowed to beat children anymore.
That was hilarious. 😂😂
New segment for the show: Karaoke Nights with Coco!
I am really conflicted on the whole gamblegate thing. The gambling industry is moaning about someone weighting the game in their favour, but actually the whole premise of their industry is to weight the game heavily in their own favour while making people believe it's otherwise.
They will do literally anything they can to avoid paying out on bets. Like the insurance industry too. So when someone finds a way to swing the benefit away from them I kind of want to say "well done". But...
I'm vegan at home, vegetarian outside home (especially if the only vegan options are boring). One meal around each of the solstices and equinoxes I celebrate by eating meat - generally pork with crackling.
In the past ive burnt myself badly by trying to be too extremely pure, and I dont want to do that again.
Guys in india our PM and home minister have openly asked people to bet on the stock market. So we are in a better place. Socialist heaven
Not a single reference to a particular one of the 5 sense with Liz joining. Nice to see Crooked's HR have stepped in to protect Liz!
Has Nick Robinson been watching Brass Eye and Day Today?
I'd love to have Nish as a cannon-fodder candidate for the greens. Can be local as well as parliamentary.
I've been a cannon-fodder candidate a couple of times. (We prefer the term non-target!) It's still a bit of work, with hustings and answering prospective constituent's emails - but definitely doable.
Rawlings has a massive fan base so of course Labour will offer her a meeting. How do you think politics work?
The tories are done for
This podcast is so energising despite all the crap in the world.Coco snd Nish make other podcasts look even more dour and boring.
You should get some cannon fodder candidates on - I've stood for the Green Party in the last 3 general elections, and in numerous local elections (although I've won some local elections) and I think cannon fodder candidates would probably have a lot to say on what it's like and the work they put in.
❤❤❤
I’m with you regarding using “super” in front of anything like “supermajority”. It’s like when people say “oh it’s super annoying”. It’s annoying and now I think you’re annoying for saying it 😂
Dear whoever manages these videos. Your timestamps are currently broken.
Hi!
its double D 80B
Liz is great, how have you managed to find a political commentator who's both funny *and* relatable?!
(just realised I have implied nish and coco are not that. I didn't mean to! I will rephrase: how have you managed to find *another* political commentator who's both funny and relatable?)
Nish "Cheese Love" Kumar.
Are these guys sponsored by BP?

Does that shirt say "CHEESE"? Oh, from a different angle, it looks like it says "CHOOSE LOVE". "CHEESE LIFE" would be better. Quit wearing shirts that we can't read because the mic is in the way.
Nish, be weary of cannon fodder seats (named paper candidates here, or stick figures), we had in Canada, in 2011, many of them get elected in a wave election. Ruth Ellen Brosseau en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruth_Ellen_Brosseau in particular.
