How an Unknown Car (briefly) Dominated GT Racing

- The Lister Storm appeared right as GT class racing was stepping up after the decline of the Group C sportscar class, and while it may have taken a while for the relatively unknown brand to see success with the project, it deserves its place amongst Britain's coolest racing cars.

I was a fabricator at Lister and helped build 5 of the FIA cars being pit crew aswell.
Nice to see people are still a fan of them today
Sorry for building an fugly car

Man,I would chose a sleeper over a pretty show car any day.
Wouldn't exactly call this thing inconspicuous... But performance is far more important to me than looks.
I have not heard anybody talk about this specific vehicle in a long time, but as soon as I saw GT and storm in the same title the Lister storm popped right into my mind. I always picked that on the old Le Mans 24 hours game when I was a kid.
Lister,Panoz and Marcos really got that mid 90s nostalgia going
The Lister Storm GT1/GTS officially quit racing in 2006, making it the most (if not) one of the oldest modern GT racecars to run in competition.
1995-2006 OVER A DECADE OF GT COMEPTITION!
Zakspeed viper also did a decade dominating the ring
God I remember tearing around a lot of tracks in Gran Tursmo 4 with this thing... oh the nostalgia
Also if you're looking for an absolutely bonkers Group C machine to cover, check out the WM Peugeot P88 AKA the car that set the highest recorded speed at Le Mans that to this day remains unsurpassed
well to be fair, the only reason why it has the highest speed record til this day is due to the changes to the lesarthe circuit
@@TheChill001 yes, but the story behind how it achieved that speed record and the events leading up to it is quite nuts
I've been meaning to make a video about the P88 for months, its difficult because of how little footage there is of the car. It did have a short segment dedicated to it in my video about the Peugeot 905 though
I think it was the most powerful car in arcade mode.
For clarity here the Lister LMP was never considered as a Hybrid EV race car in 2005, but rather the grandfathered cars between 04 and 05 LMP1 regs were called 'hybrids'
The Pescarolo was also a 'hybrid' for 2005
The Assetto Corsa mod for it is a real joy to drive, it's just hungry to go faster and faster
I'd really really love to see also for AC the long-tailed Lister GT1-L from 1998, which appeared at that year's Le Mans, also featured in the nostalgic Test Drive Le Mans PS1.
yes the RSS one
Where can i find the mod? I'm dissapointed at myself for not searching it earlyer, it's a nice adition to my Gran Turismo mod collection
@@rolux4853 yeah, i went looking for it and it's basically a no-go, i'm on a budget and my 17 year old G25 has been screaming to be left in peace for a while, it'll take a bit before buyng it is even an option

Weirdly enough, the Storm GT actually looks really good and memorable. The fact that I remember it strongly being in past Gran Turismo titles means it was successful enough for me.
My only memory of this car back then was from an old amdroid game called "Raging Thunder 2" where there's a car called "Storm FX" which looks very similar to lister storm. After knowing what lister storm is my mind instantly goes "That's the car i played on my old tablet!"
Oh damn, that game is a blast to my childhood!
Great video! The Listers and the Marcos LM600 always stuck out on the grids amongst the slightly more common looking sports cars
I loved that car in GT2. It was really hard to turn but it was a rocket in the straights.
A rocket that got passed by the Saleen, Ferrari 550/575, Murcielago and Viper on the straights.
@@stillious none of those cars were in GT2 but the Viper lol. And it was slower than the Storm, handled way better though.
@@RafitoOoO Misread, my mistake. Thought it said GTR2.
@@stillious all good
700hp was good but the weight is pretty bad. I was using it on Rome 2 hours a few weeks ago, got to lap 90.Did it again in the Super Silohuette Skyline and finished on lap 97...
It was a monster down that back straight though
I first came across the Storm in TOCA 2 Touring cars for the PS1 but you could only race it against other Storms so it was hard to judge how competitive it was.
Also I was 11.
Was looking for the fellow TOCA 2 players😂
Today's GT3 cars are cool but the 90s-00s GT cars were on a whole different level
I'll always remember my Dad taking me to British GT in the early 2000's where the Lister was always a threat to win, great times! I also remember the crazy TVR Cerbera Speed 12 and the strange Quaife R4 GTS, it was an interesting time!
Loved the Storm in GTR/GTR2. Absolute beast of a car
Tiff Needell-approved, also kicked ass in GT2!
As a jaguar enthusiast this made me happy
I know everyone remembers this car from GT2 but who remembers it from NFS III Hot Pursuit?! That's where I was first introduced to Lister and I've been a huge fan ever since. What a glorious car!
Also, I love your humorous commentary mate! Makes these videos so much more fun!
I remember it from GTR 2. Even there it was an amazing car.
I can't say why I liked the car so much in Gran Turismo 4.
I do know that it would haul the mail if you told it to go in a straight line. Loved that thing.
It’s thanks to Gran Turismo 3 that my younger self not only knew about this car, but was also fascinated by it as a whole and wanted to learn more about it. The thing just looked cool as fuck to my 9 year old mind and eyes. But finding out about the technical side of it makes it that much more significant to me.
I fell in love with the Lister Storm when I played GT2 when I was 9 years old, it just looks like a Hotwheels car
It showed up, replete with iconic Newcastle United livery in Sports Car GT. I got really really really good at using that thing and could school the Porsches/Mercedes around most tracks, bar Mosport because I don't know why.
Also ToCA 2, full grid of Lister Storms flying around any of those tracks, fun times. Equaly as good as the Ffords in that game, ah late 90s Lister Storm
Why does everyone just casually mention the 96 daytona 24 hr crash and never say what happened? It was epic. It was my 1st ever daytona 24 id ever watched and was 11 so ill never forget it. Coming off nascar turn 2, a tire blew, it slid down in to the infield (back when it was grass), dug in, barrel rolled several times and was completely destroyed. It was insane. Its hard to find vids of it now but it was shown live
Thx 4 sharing the memory
I used to play Total Immersion Racing (2002) on the PC and I was introduced to Lister Storm GT. What a machine.
Samee!!!! I found out about alot of cars from that game when I was very young
i first learned about the lister storm from an old game known as gtr2 and to say i loved the thing then was a understatement. didnt think it was so forgotten
Loved the BTCC era - it was great watching the Storm GT dice it up with McLarens. My personal favorite was the Lotus Esprit GT1 though it sadly didn't see too much success... occasionally it did hang up front but couldn't seem to do so on a regular basis.
The road going version is my 'money no object' dream car - don't know why, but it enamoured me instantly
One of my favourite cars from GT4
The storm has brewed. And the lightning has struck at their a long hiatus. It's one of those rare gems of British Motorsports.
Love this car, was one I always wanted to buy on GT2 back in the day. Looking forward to the next video!😊
Loved driving this in Total Immersion Racing! Great video man 👍🏻
this is the best Gran Turismo lore channel on RUclips
Another banger! Keep them coming! Love the mix with video games!
One of my favourite cars
Amazing as always!
This brings back memories. I only know this car from the GTR/GTR2 games. In those games they weren't competetive either but had the best engine sounds! ;)
The Mclaren 1997 and the Mercedes CLK 1998 are my Favorites for 1 hour of Spa in Gran Turismo 7. Its amazing to see them both in One Video.
I was obseesed with the Storm in old Gran Turismo games, always one of my favourite racing cars. This is also the first video I've watched of yours and I really enjoyed it! Subscribed.
I thought this car was a part of my imagination in GT. Thanks
Awesome video as always I can't wait to see your next video I hope for more group B cars like the Lancia Delta S4 when you have the time.
I'll get around to all the group B cars eventually haha, the stories are always great
Great video! I love these cars.
Never knew how this always finished last on gran turismo 3 despite always having way more power than the gt500 cars
I've always wondered about the history of this car.. thank you for this video and the research you did to produce it. Very well done!!
Hi, i worked as race mechanic om gt2 storm in british championship, way back late 90s and early 2000s etc...
If u would like any further info, I would be more than happy to fill u in with my inside knowledge of the storm. One thing people need to be aware of, at this time Lister were relatively poor compared to other Gt cars of this era. Workshop (Base) was in Leatherhead on an unassuming small business estate just off J9 M25. The workshop was extremely small, having to keep the unused GT1 car (Newcsstle sponsor car0 permanently up on a car lift etc... and none of this McLaren like spotless workshop floor, more like a rabbit hutch with debris all over the place, lol...
Had an amazing time there.
Oh, another thing, 2002 season, we managed to go the entire championship without ever opening up that huge Jaguar 7 litre engine, not even to inspect the heads! Crazy, lol
Beautiful video as always! can you do a video about miscellaneous gt1 cars??
yeah I really liked the [road version of the] Storm in NFS III as DLC. yeah, they had DLC in 1998! it was one of 4 free cars you could download from EA's site, and if I remember correctly, it was by far the best. the brand new (at the time of course) 360 Modena was one of the others.
This is a top channel. The bloke is hilarious. One of the best on the Internet.
Can you include exhaust sounds / race audio from the cars please? I like to hear the cars a bit.
Just for your algorithm.
Another very interesting video and you need far more views
Thanks for your efforts
The only time I have seen the Lister Storm is in Gran Turismo 4. That car have been buried deep in my memories until you dug it up
Another banger video
Test drive Le Man's was my first experience with this car. I loved it.
It was one of my favorite cars to drive in GTR 2, the power delivery was very good
I got to see one race at Pikes Peak International Raceway in a World Sports Car Series race. It sounded epic.
ah yes my favorite gt racing doorstop
seriously though, it's an awesome car. great video as always!
Ayyy new video!!
I was recently watching a play through of a game called total Immersion racing. It features a bunch of uncommon cars including the lmp lister
I remember this car from the video clip of Superfunk “Last Dance”.
I used to love this thing as a kid back in Gran Turismo 4 and it had simply vanished from my mind, I’m having mad flashbacks rn lol
One of if not THE all time favorite car/s of my puberty - and will always be.
Gran Turismo 4 is probably the only reason I know of this car and this manufacturer, since I was born around the middle of its competitive career (and not in the UK). But I gotta say, I used the Lister Storm so much, especially back when I played the game as a kid. It was probably my favorite car in that game.
Wen i was younger I call this car the lister strange
Lister Storm had a brutal Jaguar V12! A big 7 liter V12 Jag!
Good to see you back! Truth be told, the Storm is a fascinating car, its looks alone should make it memorable. I assume the fact so little were made kind of hurts its image, as very few people know them. One of those cars which owe part of their image to Gran Tursimo. However... If I'm honest, it's racing endeavors were doomed from the start. The car is rather heavy and while the Jaguar V12 is a brilliant engine, a bulky front-engine car will struggle against mid-engine race-cars. As you said, brands wanted to use as many Group C parts for GT1, it takes something else to cut it against these icons.
Great content as always. Do you think you’d do videos covering any current cars racing in the WEC, IMSA, etc? Would love to hear your thoughts on the hypercar and gtp classes
Brewing up a storm😅😊 great work sir respect 🙏
The OG will remember this car from gran turismo 2
Driving the storm in Gran Turismo 4 without traction control on the nurburgring and slinging it around corners barely in control is one of the best feelings in gaming
I'd love to see a video on the Marcos LM600, another forgotten race car of the same era.
I had a dream cars book as a child. The Storm was towards the back of the book and had relatively little written about it, at least when compared the McLaren F1 which had launched that year. However I expect owing to the ubiquity of the F1 (I grew up 2 miles from Woking) the Storm always fascinated me to a far greater degree.
OH the 190 =))
mr.

so good to see a jung man knowing about cool cars and present them here in your style !
cars we never again will see in real live? OK if i look out of my window i see a 190 2.6 but here is no Diff in wohle wide germany? :(
keep ypu your great work! thank you !
greetings
This is my favourite memory from Gran Turismo. Stonking that thing round the Nurburgring like a bat out of hell. I used to think the yellow and green colour scheme was weird but considering it’s why I remember the car, possibly a good choice by them… If only I could actually own a lister storm gt lol
Got to see this race against the tvr speed 12. Have you done a video on that yet ?
So, ive watched a few videos and my only critique is video length(from the few I watched) and only because I could talk and listen to people talk about racing indefinitely. Of course, we don't have time for that kind of stuff but nonetheless good sir, you've earned a sub.
You're glasses are 🔥🔥
Loved the Lister Storm back in the day :)
I loved this car once I saw it on Gran Turismo 3 and had fun with it too in time trials. But when I raced with it, it seemed to have a hard time catching up with the other cars on the straights (like the Dodge Viper GTSR, Mazda 787, Corvette C5-R, and the Toyota GT-one). Of course I was around 7 and cheated to try out the many cool and unique looking cars that Gran Turismo 3 had. But, I still love the livery design and the bodywork, it always make me happy to see.
This car was included in 'NEED FOR SPEED/HOT PURSIUT' along with the CLK-GTR, which, unfortunately I couldn't get airborne.:)
Yep !
one of the homologated madness is the BMW e 46 M3 GTR, i really love your videos on the C class or the GT1. and all about le mans. keep the god job and if you can make a video of the BMW that will be grate. thx for your time
Recent sub thanks to these videos and that oh so nostalgic gt music. Do you think you could do a piece on either the Zonda R or the suzuki cultus/escudo
All three are on my list! I'll get around to them at some point
While I admire the persistence and passion behind it, you can't deny the Storm never won when facing serious competition.
Man i remember this car in Gran Turismo 4 and it was favorite for me and i always thought the Lister Storm was some kind of twin to the McLaren F1 GTR or something like that
That thing soumded Awesome,
These are still badass cars , has a cool name also.
Now idk if you cover cool cars that weren't in GT games, but the Sintura S99 is a cool car as well. I've not seen any video of this kind talking about it.
I always remember it in the Newcastle United livery.
Love these vids! What mic do you use? I thought this narration sounded so old-school like 90s Era
I always thought that the engine was in the rear of the car giving the look of it
I always loved the Lister Storm in Gran Turismo 3, but even then it wasn't that good either. I vaguely remember the LMP from Total Immersion Racing if i remember right. It was a 10 lap race at Monza
Gran turismo 2 one of my favourite cars
I remember drawing this car, and reading some articles about it and just found it so damn cool, was gonna post a video about it as well, but i just lost the motivation to continue to make the video, despite having all the footage ready
That car has a really cool name 👍🏽
I didn't expect Lister to be around these days!
Yet another underrated car from the good old sim GTR 2 😅
The Lister Storm was my favorite gt car in gt4, just beating the Tom's Castrol Supra and the Pennzoil R34
Was my favorite car in grant Turismo
I think these videos are awesome. Really glad I found your channel.
Have you done the Mercedes 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II? The black one with the red writing on the bonnet was in one of the GT games. Would like to see a video on that if you haven't and are interested?
Great content 👍
190E Evo II is on the list! I'll get around to it eventually
Awesome! Also can I cheekily ask for the Team Orca (think it was called that) Dodge Viper video? 😬😄 I played alot of GT as a kid and that Dodge Viper was my all time favourite car. I even had a model of it on my bedroom side! 😄
Anyway really looking forward to more, glad I found this channel!
When I hear Lister Storm, the first name I think of is Jamie Campbell-Walter.
Fun fact : on gt4, without playing the gt mode ,the storm is the fastest car in arcade mode
I love the GT-one Racecar...🤌
5:36 what kind of car drove Klaus Ludwig ?
do great how you present that stuff here ! i like it so much ! =))
and yes i have some Lister here... but just in 1/32 scale ;)
Will there be an Gilliet video in the works soon? Those cars were pretty damn weird looking but cool looking as well.
I have done a video on Gillet! Very weird, but pretty cool
this car is one of the cars that i forget the name but looks fricking cool.
