He added that she'd often wake him in the middle of the night to view particularly spectacular full moons. In an interview on Midway Atoll with National Geographic environment writer Craig Welch, the President reflected on his legacy and how he thinks we should focus efforts to save natural places. This interview came during his trip to Hawaii in early September, 2016, and just days after he expanded the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument surrounding the Hawaiian islands, a pristine expanse of coral reefs and seamounts.

Of all the presidents, Obama is the most fascinating one. His complicated childhood, his mother's belief in his capabilities all gave him this perfect mixture of confidence and humility and extreme intelligence. He's cool without being arrogant. I personally think he's an anomaly in the series of presidents we've had atleast personality wise. When he got elected I think it was the first true sign of changing attitudes in the country. Irrespective of politics I'm glad to have lived when he was president and I think history will be kind to him.

Coming from Serbia here, i kinda have mixed feelings when it comes to this man's political carrier. That being said, i still give him the benefit of a doubt, for he was doing work on a behalf of greater lobby of people then i would really get to know in my time. His charisma and intellect made him the best president of the USA in my time. Mr. Obama, i salute you, sir. I will miss seing you daily in the news.

Stunning. I have been to Hawaii once as a student and I loved it!!! Super expensive, but worth it. I saved up my money for the trip and I never regretted it.

I agree on Hawaii's beauty & of course trying to preserve that as soon as possible, as well as wild places worldwide. In all fairness, Obama did sign bills to protect certain ecosystems. But unfortunately, the US is far from being number one in making the transition to clean energy (no thanks to Trump), and the US military remains the single biggest 'group' user of fossil fuels. Our species is far slower than a limping horse when it comes to making the transition in time. We are, in fact, very late, ecologically speaking.
