    JOE SHIRIMANI (PROFILE)
Joe Shirimani started music at the tender age of 8 when his father boughta guitar that he used to play in the evening to entertain at home. Every day when he came from school, Joe would take his fathersguitar and try to play the songs that he had heard after meals in the evening.
It was tough in the beginning but as time went by, Joe learnt to compose his own songs not only play other people’s - which convinced him to attempt a career in the music business. Joe decided to buy his own guitar to practice his songs; then decided to form his own youth band by bringing friends together. They called themselves “KIMAYOS” (short for ‘kind masters of youth sound’).The band was famous in their village and used to play at weddings, halls and at school concerts. People loved what they were doing.
In 1987 they decided to drop their own record under ShandelMusic, and it was well received in the marketplace.
In 1992 Joe released a solo album under the name of Joe Shirimani-‘Black is Beautiful’.The album was released by BMB records, and it kicked started his music career as a solo artist with the album introducing him to the Xitsonga market, whereafter record companies started to truly recognise his abilities as an artist and producer.
In 1994 he discovered and produced Esta M's album ‘Sakamela’, which sold in excess of 50000 copies (platinum sales status). In the same year he discovered and produced Penny Penny's album, which sold in excess of 150000 copies (triple platinum). That was the beginning of his true success in the music industry - what a way to begin!
Joe went on to Discover and Produce Artists such as JK Khazamula and Hasani, who also achieved Gold status. Year after year platinum albums and productions have kept flying out of Joe Shirimani’s studios. In the ‘90’s every album Joe Shirimani produced managed to reach gold sales status or better (25 000 units).
In 1997 Joe Shirimani released his solo album called “Hambanini” which had a hit track called “Notshi”. It managed to sell more than 50000 units. In 1998 Joe released “Marabastad” and managed +40 000 pieces. In 1999 it was the turn of the album “Jele”, which also managed to reach gold sales status..
Innumerable Munghana Lonene FM Xitsonga Music Awards, SATMAs (South African Traditional Music Awards), as well as SAMA wins and nominations really do paint the picture of the towering talent and market force that Joe Shirimani is in South Africa (and in particular in the Tsonga sector of the marketplace).
After a massive success, and the problems and demands that so often come along with that; Joe left the music business to answer to his ancestral calling to become a traditional healer, and took a complete break from the industry for several years.
Joe Shirimanihas now returned, and has provento the music game with a bang, that he is still the undisputed king of Xitsonga music as both a producer and recording artist- with a new musical approach and the full blessings of his ancestors - that have led to the massive successes generated from his own Joe Shirimani na Bangoni Bandawu and Joe Shirimani Na Vana Va Ndoda collaboration constructs, also with the albums he has recently produced for the likes of Prince Rhangane, Sayicology and Benny Mayengani.
in 2011 he released Banana which won him Album of the Year and the Best duo or Group on Munghana Lonene FM Xitsonga Music Awards.
2012 he released Hawu Ra Mina which also won him the Best Dou or Group

Joe Shirimani’s latest solo offering released very late in 2013 called Ka Tika which is currently number 1 in Xitsonga Tradtional music industry in term of sales, radio play/charts,Joe Shirimani recently won the best Xitsonga Album 2014 SATMA Awards and Dr Thomas Chauke Artist of the Year at the Munghana Lonene FM Xitsonga Music Awards .- KaTika is no exception to this standard and level of achievement - and yet again sets the benchmark, for others to follow and try to achieve -
