"Softly" is a solo piano project that features reinterpretations and rearrangements of some of my pieces from my catalog. It was recorded in its entirety on March 11th, 2023 on my antique upright piano in my home studio.
I'm not a pianist. I love the sound of piano and I use it as a way to sketch out melodies and chord progressions, I use it as a sound design tool, and it usually makes its way into my compositions with little embellishments and textures here and there.
Over the years I've written a lot of music for piano, some of it impossible to play without overdubbing or having three hands. But...here are a few pieces I wrote that only require the two hands and not much in the way of skill, there's more of an emphasis on texture and emotion.
A little bit about my piano:
It was made by the Cable Company of Chicago in 1903, and I was lucky enough to get it for free from a couple in the area that was moving and needed to get rid of it. I was also lucky to pick it up right before Covid in March of 2020, which gave me something to noodle around on while stuck inside. I have all of the panels off, it makes it easier to record, it also makes it easier to get inside of there and put foam and braces in strategic places to cut down on some buzzing and unwanted vibrations.
These songs were recorded using a spaced stereo pair of Neat Worker Bee condenser microphones going directly into a Steinberg UR28M audio interface, with very minimal post processing
I'm particularly proud of these and I hope you enjoy them.
