My name is Michael Southard and I am a music producer, mastering engineer, and record label owner. The videos I share on my channel are mostly short performances of me trying new production and composition techniques. I also make abstract visualizations for official music releases. Audio for my videos is available as part of my Bandcamp subscription here.

SP404 mkII Ambient Jam 2
Some more SP404 noodling. I'm slowly learning this machine. It's a whole different process to wrap my head around but it's enjoyable. I think it's a good balance between limitations and freedom. Effects and mixing are a little tricky but I'm sure I'll figure it out sooner or later.

So I picked up a new Roland SP404 mkii and I pretty much have no experience with it or anything like it. After watching a bunch of RUclips videos on how this thing works and getting used to the basics, I figured the best way to get comfy with it is to just start making tracks. The pattern sequencer is a little intimidating so this one's pretty loose.

ahh the dramatic pauses.. 🎉
I believe that playing on a traditional piano growing up helped me feel those overtones/harmonies. I wasn’t trained but I heard things. 4ths, 5ths, 7ths, etc…. I just couldn’t explain it thru theory.
I learned music theory in my 20's but I always had an ear for harmonies and intervals. Having any kind of instrument can be really helpful
I’m the same regarding piano skills. I love this idea of doing them on piano. Definitely miss my baby grand that had to be given away when we had real baby.
Haha...yeah real babies take up a surprising amount of space
Great one...
Nice One.....
Nice One .....
Great one!!!!!!!!!
This is epic, epic, epic! Make more live recordings man, you just got yourself a subscriber. How's the DS88, I got the NI S88 mk2 controller but am gonna trade it in for something else....thinking abt DS88. How's the integration with Reaper, feel of the keys (Imp for me), are sliders assignable (I use a lot of spitfire libraries)? Did you play the Felt piano on the DS88. How does the Cassette deck change the recorded sound? What are you doing with your mouse? Thanks for your music.
I've had my DS88 for a while now. The keys are the easily the highlight. The knobs are assignable but the faders aren't. I like running stuff through its vocoder. Not too hard to program, and some of the stock electric piano patches are really nice. Aside from that, it's a great keyboard controller. I like the pitch/mod joystick. If you're looking for a lot of assignable knobs and faders for controlling stuff in a DAW it's not the best for that. Yes I played felt piano on the DS88 The cassette recorder just makes it sound worse in a more interesting way I don't remember what I'm doing with the mouse. I honestly use the mouse a lot more than mapping parameters to knobs. It's just what I'm used to. Probably changing the feedback on a delay if I had to guess. Thanks for subscribing!
You have some really nice Videos..Surprised not to see many view and subs....your work is really wonderful..i subbed..
Awesome...Love when 2:08 starts....omg...I got a rush
that's just lovely
have you ever patched with other modular gear that accepts Dupont Patch cables? like the Olegtron 4060? i know that's 9v but what's the Ellitone...is it safe to patch and interpatch with other modular gear?
Very cool!
Nice.....I'm playing a lot with my Elitone my self - funny friend in the sound arsenal 🎼
Nice....thx 🎼
Nice - it's in Low Light Mixes' most recent playlist, which is where I heard it. I love the electric pianos from around three minutes in.
Cool!
Creative and nice ..... thx 🎼
Awesome, brother!
It sounds great ! Isn't it too difficult to get the Multisynth tuned ?
The pitch isn't quantized, I just go with my ears, you get used to it. That actually comes in handy when playing it with my piano which is out of tune
Dig it.
😎👍🏻
First view/like/comment?!? I’m done with the internet today. 😎👍🏻 Good stuff! Want to be enemies? 😜
Absolutely! Let's start plotting each other's demise
Time Rival done.
The contact plate for sell somewhere ? Or is it home made ?
It's home made, just a blank rack plate sitting on top of some anti vibration blocks and a piezo mic duct taped to the back. Very low budget
Time Rival ......Wow....thx - I have a lot of contact mic. Gona try it out 🎼
Sooo funny 🎼
This is i gem 🎼
Gorgeous!
You liking the synth so far?
Yeah it's unusual and fun. I don't have any soft synths that make sounds like it
@@timerival9540 controllable?
@@LettersFromMouse there's no MIDI or CV, just buttons, knobs and patch cables
@@timerival9540 can you get the noise that you want out of it or is it really quite random?
@@LettersFromMouse it can be as random or as boring as you want it to be. I may do a tutorial on it if there's interest.
