On the one hand, it's nice they took care of it for you. On the other hand, it's a shame they only took care of it for you because you have a RUclips channel with some presence. If you had been a regular consumer, it seems like they would have just ignored you.

    Mike,
Thank you so much for putting out these videos and for introducing me to this microphone. I was looking for a microphone for podcasting and making audio books and this is the one I went with. I bought it off Massdrop and I did have to return it to CAD because the noise floor was high, but now it is incredibly quiet and makes listening to the audiobook I'm making, so much better.

Not only is it a shame that you had to send your mic back twice, worse is that CAD sells mics that don't match their own specs in the first place. I sent mine back immediately. It was horribly noisy. The fact that CAD made your mic so quiet just makes them seem more sleazy. It tells me they know how to make them quiet before they send them out the first time. But, apparently, they just don't care enough to live up to their own advertising.

We picked up one of these at the BH daily special at $199.00 after watching your videos. Oh, thx btw for taking the time to produce these videos. Anyway, thought we’d take a chance at that price plus BH has an excellent return policy. Hooked it up to a Tascam dr-40 to see If there was any crazy noise and was none that I could hear. The number 5391 was affixed to mic if that means anything. Thx again for your time and talent. 😷

Last I looked (a while back) CAD were assembled in the U.S., but were actually among the first mics with-all Chinese guts-so whatever the CAD marketing department would have you believe, they are Chinese mics. That doesn't mean that, therefore, they are bad mics, but it's unlikely the e100 would ever be as quiet or as good sounding overall as, for example, a KSM32.

Sounds like a hassle with all of the back and forth shipping. I really want to like this mic, but it sounds like a gamble. When I upgrade from my nt1, it'll be to a mkh416 I think. I'll choose reliability and QC any day.

My almost new E100s was noisy. Sent it back at a cost of almost AUS $100 with insurance, tracking, sign on delivery. Came back a couple of days ago much quieter, similar to your second return. But now it has developed a new noise issue, sounds like low-level rolling thunder or wind buffeting. I love this mic when it works but sheesh, this is too much.

Mike! You mentioned in this video that this mic has a 5 year warranty. I ordered mine through the Massdrop offer and when it arrived I noted that there were two warranty terms mentioned in the accompanying literature. The warranty card states in large letters at the top "5 Year Limited Warranty." However there is an asterisk at the bottom of the card stating " 2 year warranty on all products classified as Personal Audio." It also says on the same card, "See product specification sheet, included with your microphone for warranty details." My enclosed spec sheet states "Two Year Limited Warranty."
Did you get yours serviced within 2 years? Do you happen to have any clarity on this apparent conflict of statements?
I'm just trying to sort this out.
    ******************* UPDATE *******************

Also, the front of the mic, the black plastic/rubbery part looks scuffed up a bit ... my guess is I got a refurbished unit. I've emailed MassDrop asking for a refund. I'm likely done with CAD and might be done with MassDrop, depending on how they handle my situation. Thanks all.

The repair landscape has changed dramatically in the time since this video was made. My e-100s has been sitting at the Southaven, MS repair depot for two months. The communication with the staff there is hit-and-miss at best. The e-100s is a great mic, no doubt about it, but proceed with extreme caution if you're considering buying one, as the service operation of American Music and Sound is laughably incompetent.

They finally did conclude that my unit could not be fixed and sent me a new one. Why that process took two months is beyond me. I had not noticed the "self noise" issue that Mike spoke about, either in the original or the replacement, although it is my understanding that many have experienced that issue. Still, great mic. As Mike stated on his recent VOBS appearance, it does capture the low end exceptionally well for someone with a rich, deep, bassy voice like myself.

Dan Hankiewicz thank you for the prompt reply. As it is, I find myself torn between this and the Neumann 103. I like the sound of both, but at less than half the price, the e100s is really attractive. The sound issues seem to be pretty normal, however, and that gives me pause.

Hey Mike, Since you did this video in 2017 have they corrected the problem with the 2020 to 2021 mics they sell know. It would be a shame if customers still have to send their mics in to be service 3 1/2 years later.

For anyone out there, just get rode nt1 2014. It is almost the best mic out there for anything.

RUclips Channel nt1 2014 is different from nt1a, which has fuller sound and lower noise(actually almost the lowest noise of all condenser mic).

RUclips Channel I think you were talking about nt1a not nt1 2014. Nt2a has more presence than nt1 2014.

Are you in a sound treated space? If you are this would be a logical reason for better mic performance.

Someone in the QA/repair is a deadbeat! Had you not pressed in the video (which somehow got back to other than a minion) you'd have a junkie mic! Point in favor of NOT getting a CAD!!

+1 interested in follow-up to hear what CAD said was the issue. Great videos!

Sending mics for repair would be a horror show for someone in a different country!

I didn't hear any noise at all in the 1st part. Perhaps RUclips doesn't reproduce this alleged noise? The 1 st part sounds 100% fine to me. And there are TONS of videos on RUclips by some pretty knowledgeable music producers whose voice tracks don't sound as good as the 1st part of the video.

    • @Hugmir

RUclips does reproduce that noise. Turn the volume up, and you should hear it (in that older video) even on medium-grade headphones - I can easily hear it even on my cheap-old ones.

The Neumann has a low frequency rumble.
