Very good video. I just sent my Cobra 148FGTL DX+ in for alignment for exact same problem your video showed fixing but only difference is mine came back still off alignment. Technician said he aligned it but get same radio reports back that I had before sending in and paying to be fixed. We need more real radio repair people for sure. But really a great tutorial.
Here's a great tip,if you use a PTC soldered to xtal @13.8V dC it will keep it nice and warm,PTC will saturate and keep xtal at constant temperature. I have fitted this to many ssb rigs to help keep them stable, esp in cold cars. They also work in cheap cb freq internal or external 6 dig counters connected to rig SS3900 RS Stock No.191-1721 Brand Epcos Mfr. Part No.B59901D60A40 It also removes problem when covers are off.Fit PTC to the 10.240mhz and 10.695mhz xtal, leave for about 15-30mins to warm up then set xtals freq's.These do not over heat xtals. A flux pen helps when soldering PTC to xtal, make sure both parts are cleaned and tinned when soldering.Surface area of PTC should cover can of xtal body. This mod will give you poor-mans Temp controlled Xtals and very little drift issues once realignment done. THis was done on my SS3900V9,they keep them bang on. Havnt tried my SS6900V3 but should be same effect.
Great video, reminds me of my Icom IC-735, same thing when adjusting the reference frequency, impossible to do with the PA unit off, took me about a week twiddling with it, setting it a bit high or a bit low so that when I put the PA unit back in, I finally got it to zero beat, tnx for sharing... budleyca1 Hi Bud, yes I'm complaining exactly this issue with my IC 735 repair.... , therefore we have to manage it with a different method.. Thanks for watching!
great video, good explanation, I took my first steps in aligning cb radio as well. using the Marconi 2955. great job hope you make some more with president radio's 73
I used to have a Ham International SSB 480 Channel with a large burner. The sunspot activity was peaking in the early 80s and I used to get some strange people, even on 4 Watts.
Great vid,Ive found that if you make thermal jackets made from plastic foam packaging that slide over and enclose the crystals. They work extremely well and help keep thermal internal changes to a minimum on my CRT-6900-V3.1 PCB.Ive seen this trick used on Yaesu FT-840 HF radio as poormans Crystal heater.Give it a go next time round. rob 73's
Hi Peter! thanks for this nice video. I'm learning a lot watching it. I also own a CMT 54 but before to do the alignement of a Kenwood TS 430S USB and LSB mode I should be sure about the CMT 54 frequency. Any suggestion to know if it is in good calibration? I mean if CMT frequency is exactly as what displayed. Unfortunately i don't have yet a calibrated frequency meter at home (in Lab where I was working before covid I have same Racal Dana 1999 you show ). kind reagards Antonio
jjmtzama Well, you can pull the knob and put it back that it is centre position. But more important is that you read 00 on the display for no activation of the clarifier. Thanks for asking and comment!

Wondering if you could do the SSB alignment by ear using another radio as receiver?
