- Mr. MockRock himself put out a vide on the top 10 buffs and nerfs given to characters throughout Smash Ultimate's lifespan before its final patch. I wanted to review some of the choices he made for his list and see whether or not any of them were actually that impactful to the game's meta!

Pulls out the MockRockGlock
One of the biggest nerfs I remember was in the very first patch, where King K. Rool’s down-throw got absurdly nerfed so it didn’t guarantee a combo into a smash attack at mid-high percent.
His back throw was also buffed from being IRRELEVANT to being absolutely insane in a later patch.
Fun fact, Kaboom from Hero got buffed. Before, if you got caught while on the ground from the vortex portion first before the explosion, you could still shield it if you were grounded. But after a patch if you get caught by the “suck” you can no longer shield it.
Pichu was hilariously overnerfed
For no reason his hurtbox is now bigger than PIKACHU'S

@@xolotltolox7626the bury was long thats true, but roller is quite easy to dodge and inkling has to heavily rely on it, it was overnerfed almost as much as my boi pichu was.

A nerf literally no one remembers is in patch 2.0 Mega Man lost the ability to cancel pellets. I still think about it considering what other characters got and the dlc characters that got added.

What they did to pichu was CRIMINAL
I’m a falcon main… his best buff wasn’t upsmash knockback or 2 less frames on down B. It was changing the positive knockback on upsmash 1 to negative. Every character used to fall out of upsmash with 0 sdi. Now only certain characters get out of it WITH sdi.
I use to main captain falcon in smash 4 and his down tilt sending up to no combo was what got me off him this game, glad its back to sending out and down but it was too late by then for me

Sonic up air buff, they added a second hit box for consistency
Mii Brawler went from bottom 5 to high tier, with some people swearing up and down that he could be top tier. He basically wasn't a character before his buffs lmao.
No idea how Minmin and Byleth weren't on this.
Also K Rool at least deserved a MENTION because of how funny it was that he even got nerfed at all, as that kneejerk reaction to scrubs playing online week 1. It's amazing how that happens in games all the time (looking at you, Sentinel in MvC3). He did then get some pretty decent buffs later on too.
The cloud buffs coincided with sparg0s rise during the covid era. I legit believe without the recovery buffs, we wouldn’t have had the sparg0 we have today
nearly blew a speaker out because of how high I need to crank the volume up for this channel, then an ad played at 'normal' volume and my neighbors are upset.

Ryu had an insane buff to hado letting it clank with most projectiles and Luigis double down air 0-death caused all luigi players to learn 3 new routes for it

"Did Corrin get buffed" literally has some of the most buffs for a single character in the game. The buffs are why Corrin is good because she got a lot more consistent.

Captain Falcon definitely got good treatment with the added super armor on side B and also the up B buff adding more time to act out of it. Definitely at least put him from low tier to a mid tier.

Yeah... kinda sucks when you get mad buffed, but they don't actually fix the character's real issues, opting to instead add on and strengthen gimmicks. Falcon is so crusty in Ultimate compared to 4, but instead of fixing his clunky movement they just made him a cheeser. A pretty good online cheeser, but not one thats winning tournaments.
Byleth got buffed? I just remember faster up b and stronger fsmash, did that changed a lot Byleth viability?

I really think the biggest thing for Ike in the 8.0 patch was his d-tilt buff it let him combo in other ways besides nair. but even then he doesn't really deserve to be on the list

Smash has become so punishing to play casually. Looking for friendlies online? If you’re not willing to sit through an 8 man arena to play once then hopefully you’re willing to sit through someone’s elite smash rule set. Wanna leave that match? Someone being openly toxic and farming annoying matchups? Doesn’t matter, you are timed out not them. Feels like many balance choices have raised obnoxious characters and pushed down rewarding characters that might take time to learn. Super frustrating and disappointing :/
