I grew up in Odessa and lived across the street from a drycleaner and laundromat. I worked there in 73-74 washing the Air Force fatigues of the personnel from Webb AFB. Did not know at the time they were considering shutting down the base. I also worked in Big Spring for several years with an oil and gas company in 2016 and the downtown part of BS is sad with many shuttered businesses and buildings falling into disrepair. From a story I heard from one of the old-timers living in BS, the State of Texas offered BS the chance to be the host town of Texas Tech. They turned it down because they thought it would make the town too big and lose its small town charm. Bad decision. Big win for Lubbock.

The old base now houses several prisons, as well as a municipal airport.

76 was a great year. I wasn't even a teen yet. Everyone was pro America, and life was so simple back then.

I grew up in Big Spring and I remember this. It pretty much killed our town. It was sad.
