    This is the Docker St level crossing at Wagga Wagga NSW, Australia. It is located in southern NSW on the main line from Sydney to Melbourne.
    The original gated signals were installed here in December 1969, and the current signals most likely replaced them around 1983/84 when CTC was installed in the area. It's possible that the median signals here used equipment recycled from the original crossing.
    Both gated signals have Safetran gate mechanisms (which recently replaced the previous Harmon ones), Harmon 8 inch lights with large backgrounds, and Modern Industries mechanical bells. The bell on the northern side of the crossing rings until the gates have lowered, while the bell on the southern side rings until the gates rise.
    The median signal on the northern side of the crossing has a pair of Westinghouse lights, while the southern median signal has a pair of McKenzie & Holland lights. Both bases are unmarked.
    Train info:
    1st train - ST24 XPT service from Melbourne to Sydney. Filmed on February 15, 2017.
    2nd train - 3WM2 freight from Port Kembla to Melbourne via Sydney, with locomotives NR114, NR100, 9316 and 9310. Filmed on February 15, 1017.
    3rd train - ST23 XPT service from Sydney to Melbourne. Filmed on February 15, 2017.
    4th train - 4MC2 freight from Melbourne to Griffith, with locomotives NR66, G526 and NR10. Filmed on February 15, 2017.
    5th train - 5MW2 freight from Melbourne to Port Kembla via Sydney, with locomotives NR94, NR52, NR78, NR16 and NR72. Filmed on February 16, 2017.

    I knew Australian grade crossings used some American made parts like gate mechanisms and bells. I never thought I would see one that uses all American made parts. That's very interesting.

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  6 лет назад +4

      Most of the parts used on Australian crossings now come from America. The only Australian parts today are lights which are made by Westinghouse (owned by Siemens) or United Group. American lights such as WC Hayes and Harmon are also very common.

    It's so refreshing to see cars stop for the *lights* like they should, not the *gates* like they always do around here. Awesome video!

      PeachtreeSirens thankyou. It is nice to see the cars stop, but it's a different story at the crossings without gates!

    This is a fine example is to why Docker St is my favourite crossing. Was the first time I saw the crossing in activation back in the SRA era. those Modern Industries bells make a fine classic ding sound to them to make it sound very classical.
    On a side note, thanks for doing this one especially as it's my favourite Level crossing of them all in NSW.

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  7 лет назад +1

      It was a pleasure to film this crossing, I really like it too. The Modern Industries bells certainly have a nice sound, and this must be the only crossing in Australia to have two of them. Hopefully they don't rush out and replace them with e-bells. Another interesting thing I noticed about this crossing is it must be one of the few in NSW that does not have any WC Hayes equipment.

    • @JRussellProductions
      @JRussellProductions 7 лет назад

      I haven't seen any other crossings apart from this one and The Rock with no gates with the MI Bells.
      As for the upgrades. The one I knew that was upgraded last Year was Culcairn's Balfour Street as that's now all new (Which is a shame) as before the upgrade it was a good one, before the upgrade in Culcairn it has WRRS Gate mechanism on both east and west signals which also use to have the old wishbone gates) a McKenzie & Holland Teardrop bell with the Westingouse logo on the door of the teardrop bell, with Westinghouse Lights on the east side, whilst the west had a Harmon lights with big background and a WC Hayes bell which has a lighter pitch to it than the usual WC Hayes Bells.
      Now it's all upgraded with the new E-bells and new gates, lights and signs.

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  7 лет назад +1

      I saw the new gates at Culcairn a few weeks ago, it's a shame because I really wanted to film the old equipment there. The new signals have WC Hayes E-bells and gate mechanisms, as does the crossing at Table Top which was recently upgraded. I also noticed that Urana St crossing at The Rock has new gate mechanisms and E-bells, so does the crossing at Uranquinty. It seems like they are slowly upgrading all the crossings in the area.

    • @JRussellProductions
      @JRussellProductions 7 лет назад

      Yeah. I notice it has been happening slowly. I wouldn't be suprised if Henty's Sladen Street crossing is on the list for upgrade to that. (Although I haven't heard about it if it is in the plans.)
      I'd be devastated if Docker Street Wagga Wagga will be upgraded too as that one has the good MI bells.

      There used to be loads of nice gates country crossings in Victoria (such as Wallan, Maryborough, Sheppartion, & Wodonga) but they've been trashed by either the V/line nazis or a rail bypass in the case of the last one.

      TrickyMario7654 yes I thought it was amusing. There isn't much room between the gate mech and the fence, must be tricky for the signal maintainers.

      Nolman0001 Reminds me of how there's still a few old Connex, M>Train, and The Met related signs still left over on the rail network. There's also an old Met Bus Stop sign near the intersection of the Princes Highway & McGregor Road in Pakenham.

    0:31 so you found another MI bell in use!
    0:43 first time I've seen that warning label there!
    6:15 nice two-tone horn! I thought the XPTs had normal horns!
    7:13 that horn should be on a XPT!
    11:57 that horn sounds nice!
    12:11 nice catch of an engine in the old Pacific national livery!

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  7 лет назад +1

      Yes the crossing has two MI bells, it's hard enough finding one so two is a big bonus! I've never seen one of those labels before either, I guess it's there because the counterweights go very close to the fence when the gate is lowered.
      The XPT's have both a town and a country horn, when used together it makes the two-tone sound. That's actually not an old Pacific National livery, it's the livery of Freight Australia (formerly Freight Victoria). They were another operator who were taken over by Pacific National at least ten years ago.

    Great video! Despite all of the ex-L&N crossings here in the southeastern US with Modern Industries bells, I have yet to find a crossing with two of them. I must say, they sound rather nice here! Wonder if the one you recorded in Henty would've originally had a pair of MI bells?

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  7 лет назад +2

      Thankyou! I like the sound of these bells too, and they both seem to be fairly healthy. Not sure about the crossing at Henty, most other crossings in the area were installed around the same time and they all have (or had) WCH bells.

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  7 лет назад +2

      There were two other crossings at Wagga Wagga, both with "lights only" installations. One was closed (in the 1990's I believe) and the other has since been upgraded with gates and newer WCH m-bells (Fernleigh Rd). It's possible that one or both of them had Modern Industries bells.

    • @JRussellProductions
      @JRussellProductions 7 лет назад

      Before the gates were installed at Fernleigh Road it was all McKenzie & Holland signals without gates, including the McK & Holland teardrop bell which was on the east side. However it was upgraded to what it is now since 2001

    • @JRussellProductions
      @JRussellProductions 7 лет назад

      As for Henty. when first installed they had McKenzie & Holland lights and teardrop bells with Harmon Gate Mechanism, until the late 1980's when the lights had the big backgrounds with harmon lights (Except for the middle signal which is still original. then replacesd the McKenzie & Holland Teardrops to WC Hayes Bells.

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  7 лет назад +1

      It would have been interesting to see Fernleigh Rd before it was upgraded, but having been to Wagga Wagga and seeing how busy the roads are I think the gates were a good idea!

      Thanks. Those lights certainly look strange, they take a bit of getting used to. I think there are only 6 or 7 crossings left with them. I wonder what caused the swelling, hopefully they're not allergic to trains lol
