AMD finally got working drivers by the way, so I'm guessing you were looking at PCs with AMD hardware ;) They ran 40-50% (!) worse than they should have until like today. Hardware may only be as powerful as the software behind it, but the development team is the heart of utilizing that technology. In many cases, the developer is to blame, not the hardware. As proven by ID and Naughty Dog this year.
+Ed Turvey I sold my Xbox One for a PS4, glad I did now. Got doom for free with store credit. I'm tired of the mediocre Xbox experience. Rise Of the TR was one of the best looking game around, but everything now coming out now it's pretty trashy.
Well i do think ID Tech 6 is a voxel based engine which is alot less demanding on the hardware then polygons. But after watching how good the new doom looks i think all engines should be voxel based.
This engine is incredibly well optimized and looks beautiful, I'm rven hitting over 100 fps on my gtx 970, that's incredible! Other developers need to take note, this is how an engine should be.
+Kitty Kat No, it's terribly optimized on PC. Most GPUs that are less powerful than the still very powerful 970 struggle to hit a constant 60 on low settings.
+Mehdi Alfiguigui I don't agree. OpenGL is still a relatively good API. This was a design choice by the programmers. They made a conscious decision to set recommended requirements where they are at. They had a idea how they wanted the game to behave. If you own x < GTX 970, don't buy DOOM, save for a new card instead.
DonRobo Maybe it's time for people to upgrade their toasters? If a GTX 970 can reach into the hundreds on max settings I see no reason why other cards cannot run it well, you must have some crappy 750 Ti to be running it badly.
+Mehdi Alfiguigui Terrible old OpenGL render?! Doom 4 runs on the latest OpenGL 4.x (similar to Dx11). Btw Vulkan existence do not means OpenGL or even DirectX will go away, they will not go anywhere for some more years, if ever, they are easier to work with than Vulkan and there's still plenty of perfectly capable GPU's out there that don't support Vulkan (or Dx12) fully, but support very well OpenGL and DirectX.
+Mehdi Alfiguigui That is not true and khronos never said OpenGL was worse than D3D (directX), OpenGL is equal to D3D11 the only diference between the two is that, OpenGL has to run and be supported everywhere (for example Android and Apple cellphones use OpenGL exclusively) so is more complex and harder to work it, D3D11 only needs to run on Windows and Xbox so is less complex, if that makes it "better" is debatable in functionality they are exactly the same.
+Big Blue Frontend Oh I also think id Tech 5 was interesting but ultimately limited by consoles of last generation. But I think there's more going on with id Tech 6 than just slapping some lighting in there. After all, a lot of the guys that worked on it were responsible for CryEngine going all the way back to its first iteration.
+Eduard Marcinek They are still butthurt over not getting review copies before release. After giving it some thought I think Id made the right decision not giving them out. I am convinced that IGN does not know a good game when they see one anymore. The games that they give perfect scores to suck most of the time and some of the best games in recent memory got a 9.3 at best (Witcher 3). While it is okay not to give perfect scores out to every game I think it is important that you don't give them to games that leave a lot to be desired (The Witness). Hell, the reviewer in the IGN review does not even like run and gun FPS games if you read her review. She basically said she liked the first half of the game and then things started to get old. My question to her would be what did you want them to change in the formula to keep things interesting? If the formula works you do not change it, you just crank the volume up which is what DOOM does throughout it's campaign. I wouldn't give DOOM a perfect 10 because the multiplayer leaves something to be desired but I think the campaign earns it a 9/10 by itself. It doesn't really matter though, I got the game I wanted so I am happy either way. I just wish there was not sites like IGN that fails so miserably at their job. I guess I will stick to Rock, Paper, Shotgun as they seem to be honest and fair with their reviews.
blitzwing1 That is not totally true, The Witness was an indie game that did not deserve a 10. I think The Witness is a neat game but the game play is not even close to deserving a 10. It is so damn subjective though it is ridiculous. I am sure you wouldn't have to look to hard to find someone that enthusiastically disagrees with me on even The Witness. My point is, if that game is a 10, how do you give DOOM a 7.1? Even if you don't like run and gun FPS games I think it would be hard to deny it an 8/10 for single player alone.
Geometry and textures are pretty average. Not that bad but nothing special either. The main focus is on materials, lighting, particles, and post processing effects. Pretty similar to IW Engine using in Call of Duty games, if you ask me.
@@allancandaza That's probably one of the biggest misunderstandings out there. The first version of IW Engine in COD 1 was noticably based on I'd tech 3, but ever since COD 2 they've changed a lot of the code and went into a completely different direction than I'd tech at the time. By 2010 there was barely anything left from the code. It was in 2011 when BF3's marketing with Frostbite 2 came out that everyone started pointing out COD's "old" engine, when BF3 targeted PC, and MW3 targeted consoles, and also ran at double the frame rate on them. In reality, basing your engine from an already existing one is a common practice. Each CryEngine version is based on the previous one, which traces back to 2003, and CryEngine itself was a significantly modified version of Jedi engine from 1995(which itself was rumored to be based on id tech 1 from 1993) Dunia Engine used in Far Cry games is based on CryEngine 1 so it also traces it's roots there. Obviously all the versions of id tech are also based on previous ones, tracing back to 1993 as well. Unreal does the same. The difference is the frequency at which it's being done, with new CoD releasing every year.
MadPropzBaller Eventhough I'm a performance and graphics snob I'll agree ;p I've played many games at 30fps locked (even on my PC) but all of them were singleplayer games. I mean: Witcher 3? Sure 60 or higher rocks, but it's still an amazing experience at 30 that I'd recommend to anyone!
***** So what's your point ? you just want to show us you are close minded ? religion barriers you put between you and the rest will throw you sooner or later in misery.
The fact that this engine can run at 60 fps on console hardware which were limited when they came out is amazing. Especially when it looks as good as it does with Doom.
ZeniMax is the parent company of both Bethesda Game Studios and id Software (and many others), and Bethesda Softworks is their publishing arm. So Bethesda Game Studios could use id Tech 6 if they wanted to, instead of slapping yet another coat of paint onto their ancient Gamebryo-based Creation Engine. I agree 100%, and have been saying it for a while now, that Bethesda Game Studios needs to work closely with id Software to fork id Tech 6, retooling it where needed to optimize it for open world RPG gameplay. I would *_love_* to see that happen!
If only more Developers would start making engines tailored for the current gen we would have more Games that look visually nice and run great and this is a perfect example. There's no real need for a PS4 Neo or Xbox One Half at this time considering it isn't possible to release a console at the moment for $399 to dish out 4K with current gen visuals. Lets just wait until Nov/Dec of 2019/2020 by then it should be possible with ease.
+BLVDKillz if you check the cost of current 4k cards, you'll find the answer rather quickly. sadly, their cost is rather in the high end, and outside of using more simulation to "amp" the effect of the visuals (which is more taxing in hardware, I might add) you're looking at something that could not hold a $400 price tag. not a chance in hell.
The only reason that the game looks and runs well on consoles is because it's a linear path. The xbone and ps4 are too weak and the upgraded consoles need to come out asap
There's actually a very unique graphical effect I've spotted in Doom which I'm surprised didn't get a mention in this video. Hazy glass. Most modern game engines for a long time have supported refractive transparent surfaces which operate by distorting the base opaque render buffer behind a transparent object. But in Doom, I've noticed there are glass surfaces which seem to blend a sharp and blurred version of the opaque buffer using a mask. It's a great effect, and creates glass surfaces which look realistically weathered or wet with steam.
I remember the animation work in rage was fantastic, with enemies able to climb walls, dodge and duck, roll etc. Its definitely one of their strong points.
Having played through the campaign, I was very impressed by the graphics. Initially I thought it would be all corridors, and that constrictive space was essentially how the game was able to look so good. However there a few times when environments do open up a fair bit and you're able to see a great deal with the frame rate remaining intact. Very cool stuff, I wanna see more from ID cos they've got some real technical mastery.
Beautiful testament of love to the game. I almost cried at the end! :-D Seriously though it's an amazing game that most media didn't review right, because they didn't get what this game is about, but the way you described the game was absolutely perfect! You get it, and so are we! Too bad you didn't talk about the FOV though, I was looking forward to see if changing it on console would affect the performance. It would be a nice way to benchmark the game. Anyway thank you for this video! It was awesome. Lily
+GirlsMeetAdventures Have the FOV @110 all the time...On mission 4 though, bridge section,it does have an impact on fps...Putting it @default does reduce the load on PS4's GPU but not completely.Other than that 1080p 60fps,a blast to play..
#DigitalFoundry - Is it possible for you to render all your videos to high quality 4K 60fps and upload it to RUclips instead, please? This would ensure that we would experience the best quality video out there due to RUclips's low 1080p data-rate. It would be so fantastic if you could do this going forward for ALL videos you do.
+Sir Jarko I'm sorry, but I have to completely disagree with you for unless you know DF's general workflow and network upload speed, I don't think you can say that. If you were generalizing, then depending on the video (using this video as a case-in-point which is 12mins+ in length) it does not take me 12 hrs to upload a lengthy video at 4K, not at all. In the end, all depends on the video size and network speed. 4K MP4 which a nice data-rate is not massively big in comparison to other formats such as DNxHD. Considering the specs of DF machinery (their machines are powerful otherwise they can't consider themselve as a pioneering benchmarking and graphics comparison company, I strongly believe they won't have any issues rendering at that resolution and I'm sure they won't have too much issue in regards to upload. In the end, I strongly believe it is a case of whether they are "bothered" to do it or not, but I believe that they should be very bothered providing high quality video comparison would further benefit their credibility & impression. Anyhow, only a person from that company and working on the videos can actually communicate what the reality is in respect to them. Thank you for chiming in though, much appreciated..
No need to actually RECORD 4k. There is some other youtube videos where they show that due to youtube wonkyness, you get better quality at 1080p if you upscale to 4k and send to youtube, than if you send actual 1080p.
OMFG DigitalFoundry is the fucking best. Very well done analysis! John you have been doing fantastic work, you are the man, excellent work! The game is 10/10 but what i would like to say is that DigitalFoundry needs more credit in the RUclips community. They have been constantly putting out thought provoking, in-depth, bare-bone analysis. Thank you.
This was one of the first Digital Foundry videos I watched. At the time I was so impressed with the graphics of Doom, I played the demo on my first custom PC, and found myself genuinely falling in love with the game. I still prefer 2016 to Eternal mostly for its art direction. This game will always have a special place in my heart. Can’t believe it’s almost been a decade since its release!
the performance of this game is insane! My PC isnt the newest anymore with my Radeon HD 7870 2GB and AMD CPU I can play this game at 60 FPS at all time with Vulkan enabled! Unbelievable.
Im not so sure yes ı haven't played on a console that much and played 99% of my games on PC but around that time new DOOM would come out and PC specs would already be higher ım not saying this to bash at the consoles or at the console players ım just trying to say what ı think so plz no hate only hate them demons and DON'T FORGET TO RIP AND TEAR THEM ALL!!!!
If more Developers would start making engines tailored for the current gen we would have more Games that look visually nice and run great and this is a perfect example. There's no real need for a new PS4 or Xbox One at this time. Lets just wait until Nov/Dec of 2019/2020.
"the current gen" is about ten years ahead of consoles. Consoles are low-end PCs. Consoles limit all games because the games have to be made shitty enough to run on them. If it was financially viable to make a PC-exclusive AAA title, it would look 50x better than Uncharted 4.
I'm really satisfied with this nice looking graphics on consoles, I found it more pleasant to play than Halo 5, I hope developers put on it a time attack mode the game is so enjoyable to replay so make it worthy !
easily the best looking game on xbox one. Stunning game.cannot get enough of the campaign at the moment. Sound , atmosphere, visuals and gameplay are spot on. Everything just "fits" perfectly. other developers should sit up and take notice. This is how its done
I'm glad to see that megatextures have made a return for idTech 6. Hopefully all the ideas that John Carmack had for idTech 6(sparse voxel octrees rendering+raycasting)have made it in as well.
+Rudis that's not exactly accurate. I'm not sure why this information keeps circulating but GNM has a lot more in common with Mantle and Vulkan, an example the command buffer management that the developer has to do. GNM is a departure from PSGL, which was used on the PS3. They wanted a shading language that was contemporary (PSSL) and in order to do that they needed a more modernized API. It was AMD's work on both GNM and the Xbone's hybrid DX11 API (prior to the transition to DX12) that resulted in Mantle. GNM is very much not OpenGL.
+Rudis given that details of the API are only given under the pretense of an NDA, I'd like to see the source for your claims that it was ever based on OpenGL. If you're in an actual position of authority to discuss it without delving into abstracts you'd be violating your NDA.
In my opinion, it's more a bad thing for amd users! because AMD drivers a very very bad on OpenGL site! Also don't let You blend from marketing bullshit, like dx12 features and so on! All that counts is the Shader model!
+oldsk00l Consoles are out of this question! They go with a unique perfectly optimized driver! And if it allowed, the developer's can go ahead using the Hardware directly, without any driver translation! And that's the answer, why Consoles are that efficient!
I thought this game kicked ass visually and game play wise on my 4 year old original Xbox one and 1080p tv. But today, my brand new Xbox One X and Samsung Q70 said hold my beer. 👍 So good.
A small touch that I noticed. If you shoot an imp while it's in the middle of throwing the fireball, it will fling the fireball back in response to damage.
Would be interesting to see how this engine performs outdoor, tropical environments including large scale maps like GTA 5. It's not designed to create such so I suspect it wouldn't be pretty.
Pimphand Gamester Well, the game opens up a few times and it looks great! And in the Lazarus labs one room displays plants, behind blurred glass but looks very convincing. Samuel Hayden's potted plants in his office may be a better example.
+Rudis Doom maxed out on PC makes Uncharted 4 look like a Last gen game these new consoles were out dated before they even released. BTW before you get a head of yourself Uncharted 4 is awsome Iv'e completed it but graphically it wasn't impressive probably because I play PC more than anything.
+Jai Gray I played a long time on PC, but it's a few years ago now! So maybe I passed some very cool and good looking games? Tell me one or more, that looks better as Uncharted 4. But be realistic and objective! I just was blown away, from some scenes of the Uncharted game, if there are a better or much better looking Game out there, please let me know! Me and PC would be lucky! Thanks...
Christian M Crysis 3 maxed out in 4k looks so real you wouldn't believe it unless u see it for yourself, Almost any of the Total war games maxed out with 36000 men slugging it out on the screen is breath taking. Game like Star citizen, witcher 3 maxed out, division on Pc looks like a gen ahead compared to it's console counter part, etc nearly every game I play looks better than 99.9% of the best looking console games.
11:16-11:52 That music sounded a lot like a retro acoustic take on Pantera's This Love. Was that the idea or just coincidence? As far as DOOM goes, I was stunned at just how good it look and more importantly, how smoothly it played, and that was on a standard PS4, coming from a PC with a 4GHz CPU, 980Ti GPU... and a GSync monitor. id know their shit, along with Naughty Dog, and having just finished Outlast 2 minutes ago, Red Barrels.
And you? just getting >60 fps while using old games or low settings or expensive Hardware! What would you go for, if you have to decide between 60fps or much better graphics? Are you really think, you are a special one, while playing on PC? I have both, but the consoles, just win! - Turn on, and just play as comfortable as possible!
i swear to god, DF nails it. those "big names" in gaming reviews and what not, probably didnt even played the game, just watch the IGN or polygon shit (probably the worse possible channels) i honestly thought they will fuck this up, but man was i wrong, ID came back and blew everyone away, technically this is how its done, not telling that console and pc should be equal but this game looks and plays so good on all platforms, all those sceptical "the console versions pulled the pc version down" sayers are gone, well done ID, well freaking done!
It does look good and run good on console, well the ps4 version atleast. But it still plays crappy because of the controller. This game is to fast for console to truly take advantage. It needs to be played with mouse and keyboard to fully experience the fast gameplay effectively.
+Hagg Son I was thinking that might be the case (as the controls are sublime on PC) but it actually DOES play very well on a pad. It's still possible to perform nicely since extreme accuracy isn't really required. I think they did a good job adapting it to a pad, though obviously the mouse is best.
+John Linneman Doom, like Battlefront, has a surprisingly high level of input latency for a 60fps game. There's a night and day difference between those two games and cod for instance.
John Linneman Perhaps, but I do think it needs a little more skill from the player than slower shooters on console. Atleast of what I have seen from most console footage of this game, players seem to struggle more with this game than other shooters. Go look at examples of game streams from pc gamers and console gamers from this game and you will notice what I mean. Even compare other standard slow shooters on console to this game. I don't think console gamers are very used to this speed.
+Hagg Son The problems with the controller are mostly from bad controller programming. Most of the gamepad gameplay are with users using aim smoothing, which makes aiming inconsistent. That's partially why you see some jerky movements. I'm not sure if they're aware of the option to disable it. The other reason is the deadzone and acceleration. The deadzone is 20% and square. It's too big for easy precise aiming and the square shape forces missing diagonals. The acceleration curve seems fine, but it's slightly inconsistent likely because it uses the same 'square' logic that causes the deadzone. Much of these issues aren't solely id's fault. It's basically standard to program controller wrong. The console version is perfectly playable, but the aiming controls could be better.
This company deserves legit sales. I wasn't too keen on outright buying it straight away, before knowing what performance I could expect from it, but seeing this background of what half-complete (half-not-as-good looking as this) project they cancelled, only to jump so much in everything (quality, performance), I am checking Steam right now to buy it.
+Pauls Uhh dude, shut up please. You resort to personal attacks, this is extremely childish. And straight away in your first comment you start shouting illogical things: "IF YOU THINK YOUR OPINION IS A FACT, IT STILL ISN'T. " and go on being a smartass on what objectivity and subjectivity is. Clearly people know that other people have different opinions. Being subjective is the default. By your logic, everyone who says something should start with "my personal opinion is that..." - no, the opposite is the exception, when people claim objective facts, they should point out that the comment is based on real, measurable data, and NOT a subjective opinion. If they fail to emphasize that, it is taken as a subjective opinion by default. Besides, why can't you comment normally?
I play this game on a 120 inch screen via Projector and Xbox One and it looks absolutely stunning! I could not imagine having better graphics, and I would never trade for playing this on a tiny computer screen!
The only point you mentioned I disagreed on some level with is the texture quality of the game. You didn't mention the disparity between texture quality between PC and console, but Doom may have every other aspect going for it, but it's textures took quite a big compression hit on the PS4 version to accomodate for the 1080p, 60 frames per second gameplay.
Id Tech 6 is a brilliant engine. I'm glad they fixed the issues that the previous versions had especially the texture streaming problem, now it's very minimum especially compared to rage. Runs like a dream on pc as well
I do wonder though what approach they took with the global illumination in this game. As far as i know it is not baked but dynamic. Couldn't find any information about it so far.
I hate to say it, but Doom 4 or 2016 was saved when John Carmack left his company to pursue VR. Hopefully ID Tech6 engine can become the power house it once was back in the late 90's to mid 2000's.
Love this game... And runs great as well... Using Vulkan at 1440p, high-ultra settings (a step above console's medium-high settings) and TSSAA 8x, you're getting rock solid 60fps 99% of the time on an OC'd 970/i5 machine...
Great stuff and insights well explained! Keep it up! I am just sorry that the weapons and explosion sounds of Doom seem to lack impact. Maybe that's worth a video?
RE4 Original Demo Trailer was actually the game I wanted to play. Even though it turned out to become a different RE4, still good but not the tech we were shown. I guess the limits of GC made Shinji Mikami rethink the initial design approach.
Really love they went back to more Serious Sam type of experience,.. It is frantic and fun as hell... Got it on PS4 and actually plays remarkably well with controller (which was quite surprising,.. managed to finish it on hard (ultra violence)) Also Platinum-ed it today. Only ran UAC on ultra nightmare,.. Really doubt anyone can finish it with a controller though,.. It plays perfectly fine,.. but Ultra nightmare is really hard as hell,.. It takes insane amount of skill just to stay alive trough 1st mission (maybe there is a way to backup saves after each mission)
That's what it's all about, a stable, fast, easy on hardware and impeccable looking engine. A marvelous thing indeed.
+Necris Couldn't agree more!
+Kind Old Raven Seriously, this looks better than any other current engine!

It is so damn subjective though it is ridiculous. I am sure you wouldn't have to look to hard to find someone that enthusiastically disagrees with me on even The Witness. My point is, if that game is a 10, how do you give DOOM a 7.1? Even if you don't like run and gun FPS games I think it would be hard to deny it an 8/10 for single player alone.
id Tech 6 looks like the result of UE4 and CryEngine 3 having a baby with the optimization for Uncharted 4 and Halo 5.
unreal engine ewwww with flipping assets hahahaha i go for cryengine not unreal engine hahaha
Geometry and textures are pretty average. Not that bad but nothing special either. The main focus is on materials, lighting, particles, and post processing effects. Pretty similar to IW Engine using in Call of Duty games, if you ask me.
Agree
@@okaybutwhythough7456 iw engine is derived from id software's Quake 3 engine hahahaha!
@@allancandaza
That's probably one of the biggest misunderstandings out there.
Each CryEngine version is based on the previous one, which traces back to 2003, and CryEngine itself was a significantly modified version of Jedi engine from 1995(which itself was rumored to be based on id tech 1 from 1993)
Dunia Engine used in Far Cry games is based on CryEngine 1 so it also traces it's roots there.
Obviously all the versions of id tech are also based on previous ones, tracing back to 1993 as well.
Unreal does the same.
The difference is the frequency at which it's being done, with new CoD releasing every year.
60 FPS is DEFINITELY PLAYABLE!
+BLACKB0ND Doesn't matter since our eyes can't see pass 14 FPS.
Bond tales
+Bestgameplayer10 13... n00b
+BLACKB0ND I usually don't mind 30fps in single player games, but the fact that DOOM runs at 60fps is a huge deal and adds a lot to the experience.
Playing Doom 1080p max settings and 165Hz is so insanely amazing.
Hoffy C.H idc
1440p 144hz max for me and the game runs like an absolute fucking dream

The fact that this engine can run at 60 fps on console hardware which were limited when they came out is amazing. Especially when it looks as good as it does with Doom.
Here's hoping for a new Quake!
Man they would be heroes if they did that straight after crafting such a good Doom game.
+Nomad quake is not much of a diffrent then doom
+Shadowriver Quake is about Mythology, Doom is about demons and shit.
+mrpositronia They would be crazy if they dont do a Quake game after the amount of prize they are getting now.
+mrpositronia please no, they'll casualize the fuck out of it.
6 years later and Doom still looks amazing
See the quality on "weak" consoles is all down to developer wizadry. Job well done id.
good guys id joines the "not lazy ass game developers list"
Bethesda Game Studios needs to use this engine for future Fallout and Elder Scrolls titles.
It belongs to Id software not Bethesda they just published these titles.
@@Harv-E Bethesda owns Id and the engine
ZeniMax is the parent company of both Bethesda Game Studios and id Software (and many others), and Bethesda Softworks is their publishing arm. So Bethesda Game Studios could use id Tech 6 if they wanted to, instead of slapping yet another coat of paint onto their ancient Gamebryo-based Creation Engine.
I agree 100%, and have been saying it for a while now, that Bethesda Game Studios needs to work closely with id Software to fork id Tech 6, retooling it where needed to optimize it for open world RPG gameplay. I would *_love_* to see that happen!
@@HickoryDickory86 id tech are allways masters of engine technology so it would be interesting to see if they did.
4K was never intended to be the target game resolution for PS4 NEO lol
It plays UHD blu-rays and streaming services in 4K, that's it.
+MrSlashStudios You known this how? lol
+BLVDKillz if you check the cost of current 4k cards, you'll find the answer rather quickly. sadly, their cost is rather in the high end, and outside of using more simulation to "amp" the effect of the visuals (which is more taxing in hardware, I might add) you're looking at something that could not hold a $400 price tag. not a chance in hell.
berzu21
Well, it isn't much different when we talk about open-world games.
The only reason that the game looks and runs well on consoles is because it's a linear path. The xbone and ps4 are too weak and the upgraded consoles need to come out asap
These videos are my new favorite series... So happy ID and DooM are back...
I can't get over just how much I love everything about the new Doom. A masterpiece iD, a masterpiece.
I love these types videos that go into detail about what's powering today's games, it's fascinating. Great video guys
AND NOW THIS AMAZING GAME IS COMNG TO SWITCH
I remember the animation work in rage was fantastic, with enemies able to climb walls, dodge and duck, roll etc. Its definitely one of their strong points.
FOV slider and graphics options on a console game? What is this heresy?
Lily
I actually did test FOV but forgot to include it in the video. I found that the performance was basically identical at all FOV settings, thankfully!
Hahaha, ok. :) Lily
+GirlsMeetAdventures Have the FOV @110 all the time...On mission 4 though, bridge section,it does have an impact on fps...Putting it @default does reduce the load on PS4's GPU but not completely.Other than that 1080p 60fps,a blast to play..
+Vagelis C Thanks for the info :)
4:00 The song is called "At DOOM's Gate" in case anyone is wondering. :)

LOVE these console analysis videos. Keep it up, DigitalFoundry!
In my opinion it's the best shooting vidgoame in years. It's so much fun.
Bought the game on steam as I support the developer. I work an honest job so that I can pay honest developers for their work

Thank you.
This game looks so good and realistic that it makes the saturated, grainy looking 30 fps uncharted 4 look like a saturday morning cartoon.
Hey DigitalFoundry, are you guys going to test DOOM with the budget PC? Thanks!
the performance of this game is insane! My PC isnt the newest anymore with my Radeon HD 7870 2GB and AMD CPU I can play this game at 60 FPS at all time with Vulkan enabled! Unbelievable.
wow at this rate, if this game gets a Neo upgrade, it should be identical to PC Ultra settings at 1080p/60fps. kudos to Id.
Can you also cover the graphics on PC after you unlock the extra setting above ultra via console command, I wonder?

+Flying Snail Agreed
+Santiago Andres Sandoval it is because the game is linear
"the current gen" is about ten years ahead of consoles. Consoles are low-end PCs. Consoles limit all games because the games have to be made shitty enough to run on them. If it was financially viable to make a PC-exclusive AAA title, it would look 50x better than Uncharted 4.
We got the Xbox one X and it does 4k
So be happy
Perfect Analysis as always!
That music at 11:16 reminds me so much of "This Love" by Pantera.
Doom and Uncharted really show that console devs aren't even trying to be good at game development.
+MagnaSonic3000 The fuck you talking about?
Something you are clearly too stupid to understand.
+MagnaSonic3000 I wonder the same about PC devs when I see Star Citizen.
Yeah, honestly these companies pushed the boundaries of what you'd expect, so it's nice to see some devs not cutting corners.
No shit, that's why it's in beta.
God, I can't believe it's already been eight years.
I'm really satisfied with this nice looking graphics on consoles, I found it more pleasant to play than Halo 5, I hope developers put on it a time attack mode the game is so enjoyable to replay so make it worthy !
I played this game @ 1080p 75hz. It ran absolutely flawless on my 4670k GTX 970.

easily the best looking game on xbox one. Stunning game.cannot get enough of the campaign at the moment. Sound , atmosphere, visuals and gameplay are spot on. Everything just "fits" perfectly. other developers should sit up and take notice. This is how its done
One word: Beautiful!
I'm glad to see that megatextures have made a return for idTech 6. Hopefully all the ideas that John Carmack had for idTech 6(sparse voxel octrees rendering+raycasting)have made it in as well.
Yeah also the death of id tech 5 due to megatexture you weeb hahaha
Oh, and it runs in OpenGL on PC. :v (Not sure if it does so on the consoles as well.) I see that as a good thing.
***** Ah, thanks!
+oldsk00l
Consoles are out of this question!
They go with a unique perfectly optimized driver!
And if it allowed, the developer's can go ahead using the Hardware directly, without any driver translation!
And that's the answer, why Consoles are that efficient!

+TecnoMercy exactly. Doom also has it's own "Mouth for War" and a little bit of "Rise", that's all I can remember right now.
+TecnoMercy yaaaa man!

That music sounded a lot like a retro acoustic take on Pantera's This Love. Was that the idea or just coincidence?
As far as DOOM goes, I was stunned at just how good it look and more importantly, how smoothly it played, and that was on a standard PS4, coming from a PC with a 4GHz CPU, 980Ti GPU... and a GSync monitor.

those "big names" in gaming reviews and what not, probably didnt even played the game, just watch the IGN or polygon shit (probably the worse possible channels)
i honestly thought they will fuck this up, but man was i wrong, ID came back and blew everyone away, technically this is how its done, not telling that console and pc should be equal but this game looks and plays so good on all platforms, all those sceptical "the console versions pulled the pc version down" sayers are gone, well done ID, well freaking done!
+Hagg Son
The problems with the controller are mostly from bad controller programming.
I do 1440p at 125 fps...

Nobody is talking about Doom 3. You seem like a dumb person.
+Pauls Uhh dude, shut up please. You resort to personal attacks, this is extremely childish.
And straight away in your first comment you start shouting illogical things:
"IF YOU THINK YOUR OPINION IS A FACT, IT STILL ISN'T.
Bought it yesterday for PC, and im freaking loving it!
battlefield 4 and battlefront have better graphics
not running at 1080 , ut yes , their pc version is far superior
+Slayer4640 i think so too

Nearly unbelievable
Bf4 runs at 900p on ps4. It's a blur fest. Jaggies everywhere. Battlefront mp only trash that no one is playing anymore.
+Just BringIt I disagree with the jaggies and blurry claim. It looks crisp and clean like lime battlefront.
Looks incredible. Same for gameplay. I'm definitely getting this.
I play this game on a 120 inch screen via Projector and Xbox One and it looks absolutely stunning! I could not imagine having better graphics, and I would never trade for playing this on a tiny computer screen!
It's so refreshing to hear that new AAA game works and looks as it should... X1... 720p lol
Nice DOS touch... great content as always DigitalFoundry... Keep up the good work.
The only point you mentioned I disagreed on some level with is the texture quality of the game. You didn't mention the disparity between texture quality between PC and console, but Doom may have every other aspect going for it, but it's textures took quite a big compression hit on the PS4 version to accomodate for the 1080p, 60 frames per second gameplay.
i just got this game for a few bucks. i cant believe its that good!
It's not until after we beat it once did it start crashing to the desktop randomly. It's still not enough to stop us from playing. Excellent game.
I sure will get this game. I played the MP beta and it was fun as HELL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
Wow! I learned so much more than what I thought I would! Great video.
I hate to say it, but Doom 4 or 2016 was saved when John Carmack left his company to pursue VR. Hopefully ID Tech6 engine can become the power house it once was back in the late 90's to mid 2000's.
YES new DOOM is just brillant , i LOVE this game , i make a Platinum trophy because i play it so much that it pops-up :P
When can we expect a Digital Foundry Retro take on the original Doom?
Mythos there is already a 56 minutes DOOM episode (Df Retro).
They made Doom great again! Great job guy at id! id tech 6 FTW!
Amazing video man, thumbs up!
Hermoso trabajo, ya no hay excusas para los desarrolladores. Cada mes vamos viendo mejores juegos graficamente en todas las plataformas.
Looking forward for that switch performance video in a couple months! Fuck yeaaah
Honestly right now I'm VERY intrigued by the scrapped Doom 4. No matter how bad the build was I would give it a try just out of curiosity.
