I liked that episode too, but it seemed like the focus was more on saying goodbye to Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, and Kyle Mooney (this was before we discovered that there'd be more cast members leaving, like Alex Moffat, Chris Redd, Melissa Villasenor, and Aristotle Athari).

Yeah, but just cause a creator says something doesn't mean it holds much meaning. At some point, when you release something in the public, you lose control over it. I'm pretty sure JK Rowling has said some crazy stuff about Harry Potter characters, and the fanbase was just like "No"

I had no idea I was a year older than Hello Kitty - I mean I knew I had gotten older, but that kind of thing is really disturbing? At least I'm married to a human that looks human, we have a kid who's 21 (we're all allergic to cats too) - but I've never made millions on useless crap & will never get back the birthday money I spent on stickers, stampers, candy, or grab bags with useless tiny coin purses, melted lip glosses, mis-shaped erasers or broken jump ropes 😂

Keke Palmer has to host again asap. She is incredible in these sketches - one of the few guests who absolutely steals each scene she's in.
I got invested in Hello Kitty during Sanrio's Collaboration with Animal Crossing, and I too, was shocked to learn that she was supposed to be a Human Little Girl. But after a while, I just figured Kitty was a child playing pretend who simply saw herself as a Cartoon Cat. As for her age, it's likely a Peter Pan situation where she doesn't really age. Still, it was absolutely priceless to see these employees freak out about Hello Kitty's species, age, and race. 🤣

@@gir5o1she’s never been human, when the creator that she wasn’t a cat it was translated into saying that she was human. What he really meant was that she was not a literal cat but a anthropomorphic cat.

some have called to ask sanrio about this and they confirm she isn't human. my bf tried to tell me shes human and still denies my counterclaims. some say it would make sense to say shes a cat in America but in japan no, which is where the creator is from. things can get mixed up in translation as well. people perceive things differently.

🐱~ As a serious Hello Kitty aficianado myself, I love how melodramatic this sketch is ~ and Cecily shouting, "Natasha Leone, what~ what do you want?!?"~ (And Natasha is perfect for this!)~ It also speaks to how the modern-day Hello Kitty designers will dress her up in almost any costume, to sell her more~ and most of them are great, but...~ It is also funny to see grown-up adults arguing so emphatically over Hello Kitty, because when I worked at a preschool, the toddlers there were the only people whom I could discuss Hello Kitty with!~

Any thoughts on the recent growth and popularity of Hello Kitty?
I’ve seen Sanrio characters pop up in weird places, for instance, I’m a self-taught artist [my life dream is to be an expressionist painter!], I like anime and fashion and I draw a lot of Japanese street art fashion, I’ve seen Kuromi become super popular online especially among the more “edgy” aesthetics like Jirai Kei fashion, also weirdcore art, not sure if you have any idea what that is.
Any way, pardon my rambling, I just like art and aesthetics and trends.
I consider myself a sanrio lore scholar (I'm 19 and this is my hyper fixation). There are 3 stages in the main hello kitty timeline. The primary colors in her town with her family is her actual third grade life. In this part, she's a tomboy (something I see mentioned often but she's in the girliest dresses most of the time), she lives with her parents and has a twin sister as well as friends who aren't individual mascots yet. I think the time line advances during the game "hello kitty big city dreams" where she goes to the big city and gets her apartment for the first time and that's where she becomes the celebrity she is now (modelling and piano most likely). The pastel stuff with other sanrio characters (as would be seen in sanrio puroland) is her equivalent of hollywood life and being friends with other influencers/celebrities and it's why we don't see mimi in that scenario as often. The hyperfeminine pink aesthetic as seen in universal Studios hello kitty is her in universe branding. There's some stuff I missed, like how she dated Tuxedo Sam before she dated Dear Daniel but this is a very rough draft of a timeline

I knew I wasn't the only one pondering that. If they're short on space, given they're in NYC, I'd be happy to take some (as long as it's not pink).
I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think we can rule out the possibility of the merch being lent to the show by someone. Years ago, when SNL did a sketch about Star Wars toys, many of the items were from the personal collection of Bobby Moynihan, who was in the cast at the time and is quite a geek himself in real life.

In the 2000s there was a blog called Hello Kitty Hell written by the husband of a woman who was a collector of HK stuff. Guns, cars, toilet seats. It was so hilarious. (I think he probably offed himself by now, and if so, she probably keeps his ashes in a Hello Kitty urn.)

She's a "gijinka", the Japanese term for an anthropomorphic cat. She's not a human, never has been, and both the creator and Sanrio themselves have stated as such.
