That’s tough. I’ve been there. My 2 cents is to keep looking for an intake. Could always post to one of the forums and see if someone has one to sell. Looks like a decent mower.
I eventually found a replacement manifold for it at a much lower cost than it’d cost to have someone weld the old one. Part 3 of this video series shows this tractor all finished up and running. I sold this tractor shortly afterwards and moved on to other projects.
Shame that it doesn't have its original engine anymore, I would hate to see this thing go to waste. If you want to find a replacement engine for it if you can't find the correct intake manifold for this engine at a reasonable price (if you go that route, I would also search for a manifold that will fit an FD501v since it's the same displacement as the FD440v), if you decide to replace the engine, I do know Small Engine Warehouse has a kit that will swap a Briggs & Stratton V-twin in place.
I'd probably be more inclined to find a steel cam FD611V out of a 345 or GX345 to swap into it. The liquid cooling is part of what makes the 320 unique, so swapping an air-cooled engine into it would lose some of the charm.
Good point on the FD501v. I was comparing specs on that engine last night and noticed they were the same. I was able to find a manifold on eBay so I have it ordered along with gaskets and a carb since the carbs the PO bought are for the original engine.

Yep, I think I found one from an FD501v that will work, we’ll see.
What a royal pain...makes me wonder what happened to the original engine that resulted in the previous owner(s) having to swap this one into it.
Same here, but a lot can happen in nearly 30 years, who knows. The tractor has less than 700 hours on a working hour meter.
Find a welder to add new aluminum to what is missing then drill and tap it , put the stud in and away you go.
