  • Mike and I are back at it again metal detecting for Civil War relics, coins, buttons, and any other artifacts we might find. We each find some gr8 relics and Mike ends up the day with some great relic action.

    Thanks for sharing another adventure with Mike. Always amazed at how easily you identify an object when it's covered with dirt and we can barely make out an outline. It was a fun adventure. Thanks.

    Your finds at 5:30 and 8:45 are most likely related, the use of sickle mowers employed a pitman arm that throughout the years in use of that method usually incorporated a wooden arm that was reinforced at the ends with a similar piece of metal with a bolt through it to stiffen the arm where the connections were made to the machinery and the cutting blade.

      Triangle shaped teeth on hay mowers are still currently made and used on modern equipment.

    Congrats men! Most awesome musket part Chig! Great shoe buckle Mike! I worked an orchard/farm, those sickle bar mowers worked good but they were bad on bedded fawns and friendly farm dogs. Sad. Rk.

    at Number 653 on your veido, is aa tooth for a farm hars Harrow the Harrow woluld have a triangular shape each of roughly 6 ft i
    , made of heavy sood and have around 14 tooth spikes like yo found . My dad used these things to follow in plowed field, to brake up bigs clumps of plowed ground. this type of harrow dates back to the first draft horses, to the late f

    The old rotted trees that go deep are from the tree being backfilled around at some point...it ends up rotting the tree away and leaving a hole

    In the UK our equivalent of that trap would have been a GIN TRAP .

    Re the large "spike" you found..... I found that exact tool at an Irish stonemason camp in KY. They used that to work the rocks for a fence. We also found Irish buttons there.

    Please do a video of why things are so deep in the ground. Say not plowed and so on. May have been plowed under in the past? To me that would be an interesting video.

      It can very from different environmental situations like leaves and other plant growth/decay...

      Gravity in soft moist soils equates to deeper targets.Soil build up from leaf and plant decay.My favorite is deep on edge coins in unplowed soil.When the ground gets dry and cracks open up,items in the ground can fall in deeper and end up on edge.Or get lost in the dry summer.

      I know metal detecting the yard next to mine. I found stuff 2/4 inches in the ground / dirt under the grass not older that 5 years.???? It has always bugged me how it goes so deep into the dirt. Thank you for looking at it. I bet a lot of people have the same question.

    Have you ever detected in Lansing Kansas at there. Civil war battlefield. They let you keep what you find or you can just donate it to the museum on site?

    Spike might have been part of horse drawn farm equipment?. Spring tooth harrow ??? Used to drag the ground.

      Haven't watched him in a while, but those trains are probably running through Baltimore where stobe the hobo got killed in 2017. RIP Jim stobie.

    What was the purpose of the artillery chain? I'm visiting DC from Alaska and, as I've driven around the area, I keep checking fields hoping to catch you guys out digging!

      I might be wrong but from what I've seen the chain was kind of like a parking brake, they loop around the wheel to immobilise it.
