Really good, humorous, unpretentious "sampler" . I really enjoyed it. I have a Sailor Professional Gear with 21k fine nib, and it's just brilliant. I'm always a bit wary of very fine nibs because they can be scratchy. The Sailor fine nib was a delight, right out f the box, Many thanks again, Leo
Just bought the exact same pen and love it already. I didn't have an adapter at first so I used the Sailor black cartridge that came with it. When my adapter came a couple of days later I put one of my favorite inks (Iroshizuku Tsuki-Yo) in it. The feel from the nib is perfect - just the right amount of feedback.
Just heard your interview on Tokyo Inklings, so I'm late to the show. Nice cafe and street scene. Is that HK? I also like Sailor Pro Gears, although mine is only 14K. I also like the Rhodium look (not too bling bling). It writes and feels perfect, and I like the look -- like the Pilot 91/92/912. Happy writing!
I bought this exact pen because of your review! Now I am so addicted with Sailor. Please, can you review all your Sailor Pens and your favorite fountain pens
A pen store, or a online vendor should be okay. I haven't heard of any fake 14k/21k Sailors so you should be okay wherever you go. Some of the US sellers now carry special edition colours, or you might want to go on ebay or rakuten to get one from Japan. I am not against paying a little more if you can try them out in person first.
Right now, I'm looking at a Conid, or Kanilea. I love the design of the Conid pens but Jonathan Brooks makes amazing acrylic blanks which many different pen turners are using, like Kanilea or F-C. And then there's the elephant in the room, which is Hakase. Buffalo horn feels amazing to the touch and their black horn material is beautiful.
Sailor is one of my firm favorites among fountain pens. I have the Pro Gear and Pro Gear II - both in black, regular size, with silver/rhodium trim. One with an ‘M’ and the other ‘B’ nib. It’s such an understated, but classic design. I love the 21k nib and the way it writes. I use both my Pro Gear pens regularly as every day carry pens. Now, I want to get the Sailor Realo. That promises to be even better. Imagine that! 🙂
I am not sure if you've had the chance to try the Pilot Elite (E) 95S - I am referring to the Japanese manufactured pens (not the Korean licensed versions). In case you have, though, I would like to ask you the following: - which one is the smoother pen - the Pilot or the Sailor here reviewed? Of course, I don't intend to compare apples and oranges, so I mean it caeteris paribus (i.e within the same nib class (EF, F, M, B) or better yet, within the same line width class - if possible, as it happens). Thank you so much!
I have a E95s - it is a stiff nib that gets smoother as the nib width increases. The Sailor 21K nibs all have a little spring and the pencilly feedback sort of finish on their nibs that is very different from a a regular smooth Pilot or Platinum, so they're hard to compare. Because the Pilot E95s nib is stiffer, the 14k EF writes a finer line than a Sailor 21K EF, which is springy and wetter by comparison. They are both smooth, Pilot more so in the traditional sense and Sailor in the way the Sailors can be. Hope that helps.
Inquisitive Quill No problem! You should try a Platinum some day though :P I wish I could acquire more Japanese pens, but they get so expensive when buying from Europe, because of duties/taxes :)
Inquisitive Quill I have pens from all three brands, 2 Sailors, 2 Pilots and 5 or 6 Platinums. I think Platinum has more feedback when writing and Sailor is more smooth. The 2 Pilots I've got are not good though, probably had bad luck with those. By the way is that Takeshi Kaneshiro in 0:09? :P
Is it right to say that many (scratch many "all") japanese (made in Japan not that is) products are probably best in the world? I own a sailor 21k nib pen myself ... good quality
Their middle to higher end products are typically very good quality and value for money. The Germans can sometimes give them some stiff competition though!
Thank you for your nice review, I enjoyed it so much. I've got a question perhaps you could answer, this Sailor fountain pen is the one I'm interested in, but I would like to know if the fine nib in your Sailor is finer or broader than the nib on a Platinum Preppy 03F (which happens to be the line width I prefer)? Thank you very much in advance.
They are around the same, but the Sailor writes a little wetter so it ends up being broader. The default Preppy 03 is fine and leans towards the dry side, so the line is finer. Also, the difference between the F and EF is so minimal you might as well get the EF. Also I have some comparisons here - instagram.com/p/BOuhzBwA6qQ/?taken-by=inquisitivequill and here - instagram.com/p/BNww4gOAlG6/?taken-by=inquisitivequill hope that helps!
How would you weigh the looks of a pen to the nib of one? I am balancing between two pens within my budget, one being a platinum 3776 maki e soryu which has a nice detailing though an ugly nib in my opinion and also a pop cap. The other is a sailor pro gear small with a 14k nib but I like maki e detailing.
Steel nib vs 14k nib. It's really not my job to convince you one way or another, of course I would suggest to buy the pen you would use the most, but the maki-e you see here is screen-printed and mass produced. Steel Platinum nib is okay, but a MF/M/B 14K Sailor nib probably performs better. I would suggest going for value in a gold nib more. Even better - save up for a 21k Sailor! Best of course if you can try them all before hand. Hope that helps!
Nakaya is handmade and uses traditional materials, the Sailor is mass produced from fancy plastic until you get to the urushi, ebonite, or maki-e versions. Then they are comparable in price quality.
Your pen here seems to be Pro gear large I think. I have several Sailor, Proft ST and pro gear slim. and a 21k M. They are great writers. I was trying to get a sailor large but it is hard to get them as mostly in Ebay or Amazon they just list them as pro gear never as a pro gear large.
The 21K is larger and thicker than the Pilot Custom 74. Try one out in a store or something and buy whichever fits your hand better! I would consider the Sailor 21K slightly better quality than the 74 though, but the nib feel of the 21K is not for everyone.

Great video and I love the music. Very proffessional, indeed!
haha..ha...I'll never live this down!

You are most definitely my favorite fountain pen reviewer.
Leo, where have you gone. We'd love to hear from you again.

I will eventually get around to doing so! But for now, enjoy the trip videos!
Fantastic review! Do you think amazon is the best way to go for a pen like this?

Thanks! I will definitely try and find some local stores in my area.
when are you going to get a custom made pen for yourself from edison pens or scriptorium pens, i wonder what kind of material you would select

wow, so you're going for your most expensive fountain pen then, you're doing a great job giving us all this information
Haha. I think my love of Sailors is well known. Anything else I get is just icing or frills around the edges.

really hope you can teach us on writting
Nice review! What's your favourite fountain pen brand between the Big Three in Japan? :)
I like my Pilots and my Sailor so far. Won't be able to give a proper reply till I get my hands on a Platinum, sorry!
Inquisitive Quill
No problem! You should try a Platinum some day though :P
I wish I could acquire more Japanese pens, but they get so expensive when buying from Europe, because of duties/taxes :)
Can I give my 2 cents? Sailor > Platinum > Pilot. Funny, since considering the size of the manufacturer, Pilot >>>>> Platinum > Sailor.
*laughs* I can neither agree or disagree with you till I get my hands on F/EF nibs of all three. Soon!
Inquisitive Quill I have pens from all three brands, 2 Sailors, 2 Pilots and 5 or 6 Platinums. I think Platinum has more feedback when writing and Sailor is more smooth. The 2 Pilots I've got are not good though, probably had bad luck with those.

Your handwriting is awesome...............just awesome
Congratulations on the awesome pen. How did you decide on the F nib over the EF? Fear of too much feedback on the EF? Something else?
I was afraid the EF might be too thin and paper-cutting, so went with F first. First. Probably implies I'm going to try an EF at some point!
Hello
I am not good at English to hear, but I enjoying your the review.
I want to know your best rankings of fountainpen .
One day! I'm a bit biased towards Sailor though, so keep that in mind for when it finally comes!
Is it right to say that many (scratch many "all") japanese (made in Japan not that is) products are probably best in the world? I own a sailor 21k nib pen myself ... good quality
Their middle to higher end products are typically very good quality and value for money. The Germans can sometimes give them some stiff competition though!

Thanks a lot for answering, but I guess it won't be a lot broader than the preppy after judging from your Instagram pictures, is it?
You are correct, it won't be that much broader. :)
Thank you again.
Great review as always!
Best of course if you can try them all before hand. Hope that helps!
Thanks! I have changed my mind and am now looking forward towards the 1911L. I have heard too much about Sailor nibs and want to try one for myself.
Good good! Great goals.
What is your opinion between Sailot KOP versus Nakaya fountantain pens. Are they the same quality or is one brand superior? Thanks.
Nakaya is handmade and uses traditional materials, the Sailor is mass produced from fancy plastic until you get to the urushi, ebonite, or maki-e versions. Then they are comparable in price quality.
Do you actually live in Hong Kong!?
I did not see you spell proffesional with two "f's"...
hehehehe thanks.
dude 15,900? That's a steal! But I just spent all my money on a Pilot capless :'(
+Matthew Franklin Worth saving up for then! It'll at the very least stave off other pen purchases for the while.
Inquisitive Quill But I'm addicted to buying pens :'(
Matthew Franklin You have to put up the facade of self-restraint!
Inquisitive Quill But the first step to solving a problem is realising there is a problem.
Beautiful.
Correct. The easiest way to identify them is by their 21K nib. Most 21K nib Sailors are the full size pro gear/profits.
Thanks for your review!支持华人做钢笔测评 加油!
Thank you thank you!
sailor professional gear( 21K ) or pilot custom 74 ? plz help me to pick one.
The 21K is larger and thicker than the Pilot Custom 74. Try one out in a store or something and buy whichever fits your hand better! I would consider the Sailor 21K slightly better quality than the 74 though, but the nib feel of the 21K is not for everyone.
too much professional.... :D
*proffesional you mean
hahahah Your drawing is so cute!
Thank you! Gad you enjoyed it.
Good video

+Manivannan Arjunan Thanks!
