    I think any potential minority status also has an effect on the first HOH.
    If you’re someone that could immediately be singled out & eliminated as an easy vote in week 1, then definitely go for the win.
    For example, the ‘old’ person normally gets out first/early. But Jerry & Karen won first HOH and made it far.
    So I think if the majority of people wouldn’t instinctually put you in their alliance, definitely win the first HOH.

    • @MsVitaD
      @MsVitaD 4 года назад +8

      Form as many relationships as you can, only win comps when u need them,sometimes it’s best keep your ears and eyes open and your mouth on a temporary mute,especially in the first few weeks. Those are tips to make it far however to win, you need to all of that and then on top of that big and smart moves with good timing, don’t be afraid to lie and manipulate, but also have good jury management and tell all your victims the truth but with sincerity.

      If your goal is just to make it far, be Victoria. Suck at challenges. Be aggressively ditzy. Don’t strategize or make alliances. Be ok with spending a lot of time on the block as a pawn so you never have to vote and make people mad. Make it very clear from as early as possible that you’re not going to win regardless of who takes you to the end. And have an inoffensive enough personality that people aren’t going to get rid of you for quality of life reasons. It helps if you’re physically attractive but otherwise unremarkable. People keep eye candy around but vote out people they respect for things they’ve done outside the game. Who knows? Maybe someone will drag you to the end and a bitter jury will begrudgingly give you the money.

You can get away with your nominations; excusing them off as just not knowing the two as well as the other houseguests; you’re safe the first week no matter what, people will try to bond with you to keep themselves off the block. I really don’t see a downside to winning the first HoH as long as you’re smart about it and stay aloof about the whole situation while the other people around you implode.

  • @LMZ363
    @LMZ363 5 лет назад +11

    Wow and even the HoH’s who didn’t win their season were mostly in a week one alliance with the person who did.
    This video was great and challenged my preconceptions. I think an interesting follow up video, you may need helpers for all the research, would be to analyze the early games of individual alliance members, the nature of these week one alliances, why they’ve gotten better since the Brigade, and form a how-to guide on players who’d throw the first HoH but put themselves in a position to fall into these alliances. Probably a mix of luck and compatibility, but really, Isabella, Christie even, just handed these alliances...if there were a way to cast a wide social net, or a way to integrate into these early alliances without being the heads of them; aka Kacey, Lisa, Hayden, Andy, Derrick, gods there’s almost a recipe for success there I just can’t believe it’s simply the right player being in the right place at the right time...this is too much to grasp, especially with no early live feeds and virtually no worthwhile footage of night one and night two conversations. But there’s so much consistency...I feel like the late game of Big Brother is universal season after season, and this video helps explain universality among the early game despite ludicrous twists and day one boots.
    The only thing this video doesn’t cover which I’ll have to dig through myself is Dr. Will’s original observation. It’s not necessarily the people winning these competitions who are evicted, it’s the people consistently coming close to winning. Too much to think about, but I’ve definitely reconsidered everything I thought about throwing competitions, even later ones.

    Fantastic topic. It's really interesting because there are so many variables to take into account that I think it's impossible to make a blanket statement either way. Are you a more physical or social player? Is the competition more chance-based or endurance? Not to mention that because of the filming schedule, the first HOH is in power for almost two weeks making them prone to HOHitis having never experienced what it's like to sleep downstairs and not have people always coming to them. Also, forming a big alliance is great but it has to be people who work well together. If not, you have The Moving Company. Had Amanda not pulled McCrae away from that group of misfits, he could have easily been an early boot.
    I would say that if there's any sort of general rule it's that as long as you can keep your ego in check and you have a certain level of charm, it's okay to be the week one HOH. People will offer you a lot and you can pick where to go. Just don't be too committal. Plus, like you mentioned Peridiam, the lack of solid bonds makes it easy to sell your nominations with little backlash as long as you aren't obviously gunning for certain people.

    100% I would try to win the first hoh. My game plan would be to wait for someone to come up to me suggesting I target the biggest threat......and that person(s) would become my target. Winning the first hoh makes you a threat so why would I want to keep someone in the house who's targeting threats? I would use this to form a alliance with the biggest threats in the hopes of having a team of comp beasts to watch my back when I'm no longer hoh.

    It's always good to win the first HOH, because it means you aren't the first person to go home. The only person who's game was completely destroyed after a week 1 HOH was Cody. But that was due to him trying to backdoor his own alliance member, Paul. There was no saving his game after that. He ended up getting evicted the next week.

When we get to the jury stage, I will pick 2 or 3 other people and simply dominate the game. I won’t win competitions then until I absolutely need to. Then, I select a possible goat and cut my last remains of the alliance until I bring my goat to the finals. My reason to actually go for the first HoH is that my social game would be my weak spot, and forcing people to come talk to me (Hi, Kemi! Hello, Steve!) would help cover that hole in my game. Also, you brought up the inverse of a point I think applies here. While you would throw the first HoH if you didn't plan on winning many comps, if you feel you might have to (for example, you know you'll be viewed as a physical threat), then the same applies. If you feel like you're pretty safe the first couple of weeks without doing too much, there is absolutely no reason to win HoH.

    I know this is an old video, but it's new to me. :-) I just wanted to say great video! I've been in love with Big Brother since season 2, and I consider myself a student of the game in terms of tactics and gameplay. People who say that you should lose the first HOH, well, that's Big Brother 101. Advanced tactics suggest that it all depends on you. You ultimately have to know yourself. A person who has really good people skills and can make friends and alliances easily, they don't need to win the first HOH necessarily. I'm not that easy to get to know, I'm shy, so winning the first HOH would be crucial. Because once a person wins HOH, everyone comes out of the woodwork to make an alliance with them. And I would need that protection to have that wiggle room to make meaningful connections. As an aside, I believe that the smartest person to not win Big Brother is Danielle. Just sayin.' :-)

So you've gotta use this power to make friends and alliances early on. But if by the time you nominated your houseguests and have nobody backing you, you're an easy target for an HoH next week to get the least amount of blood on your hands. Personally, my strategy going in would to feel everybody out, and work with people I like (not who I think are beasts, but who I like, because if you have strength in numbers, trust and reliability is more important than bron.) Once/if I'm apart of, lets say, a 6 man alliance, I try my best for HoH, and work from there, knowing I have support and that I'm not an easy target next week. In fact, I think this puts the 2nd HoH in a tougher position if not in my alliance (The Sexy 6). That's just my thoughts on it though, I could be totally fooling myself :)

    i think judge it based on how well you've bonded with the other houseguests (and judge it as the comp continues). do you think you'd be included in an alliance with any of the people remaining? if there's someone who isn't out yet that might not want to align with you (or that you know will target you) then stay in at least until they get out.

    Like i said in the poll, the absolute smartest move you can make in Week 1 is throw that HOH comp but be in that majority alliance being formed around the HOH

    • @mikereick6019
      @mikereick6019 5 лет назад

      KingMattXL The only problem I have with this is, if you are the HOH, you almost guarantee your spot in that majority alliance. Whereas if you are not HOH, it kind of has to fall to you. If it doesn’t, you could easily find yourself on the outs and in a bad spot early. I do agree though, if you can avoid HOH and still be in that “First HOH alliance”, that is the best case scenario.

    • @BigMattXXL
      @BigMattXXL 5 лет назад

      @@mikereick6019 I think the easiest way to have it fall to you is form some sort of friendship with the HOH and just stay in or near the HOH Room where the alliance creation usually happens

    I would want to lose because I don't want that target. I would not just win it for a big alliance at the beginning because we have seen some of those fall apart very quickly and could potentially disintegrate everyone's game in that alliance.

  • @hannahkelly3913

    I think if you have any “easy” reason that you might be put up week one (being the “old guy”, the big physical threat, etc.), then it makes sense to go for that first HoH. It’s definitely more important to form a strong alliance week one which typically includes whoever wins that first HoH. I personally wouldn’t go for it because I don’t think I’d have an easy target week one, but it always depends on who’s in the house with you so it’s impossible to say. If I felt like I could be an “outsider” with the cast then I’d try for it to be safe.

    I know that may late to comment on this, but after thinking about, while I like the video, there is one area where I think your thought process, though I see where you were going, is a little incomplete; comparing the success of the 1st HoH to the 2nd HoH. I where you were coming from to compared, and I feel like there needs to more of a discussion, like another video, of when someone needs to win HoH or any competition in order to make it to the end and win the game. Although Big Brother is a game of social strategy, as you stressed, but comps as big part of the game since that is main source of power to primarily either name or alter the noms for eviction. As a result, I would love for you to do a history of the past BB winners (and possibly runner-up) comp wins (focus on HoH and Veto) in order to gauge the statistics for BBUS and BBCan (separate and combined):
    1. When to start winning comps to get your self to the end to plead for jury votes.
    2. How many HoH and Veto comps one should win based on the past winner (and possibly runner-up)
    3. Your overall thought and how much that matter (both in your opinion and jury perception/management)

  • @kaitlynbannon4567

    If you think winning the first HOH is dangerous, drink this in: no one who has ever won the second HOH has gone on to win the game in the U.S. version. They have in Canada, but not in the U.S.
    As for my first week strategy, I would probably not even worry about it. I would likely follow Will and Dan's examples, only win the competitions I need to win, and rely on social connections and strategic skills to make it to the end.

    If I am eligible, I would gun for the first that HoH. That tends to have the most opportunities to create and advance your game out of any comp in any given season for the most part. Although I get the mindset of win only if necessary, but winning comps provide a risk/reward situation of increasing the target your back while that is the main form of obtaining power in the game, and if used right, power in Big Brother yield opportunities. If used incorrectly, power can backfire and lead to a flameout

    I would love it if you could do a video about diversity in the casting. With the David and Kemi situation, I think right now a lot of people are really talking about the lack of diversity (specifically in black people) in BB21 and in Big Brother in general and the fact that a black person has never won in 21 seasons of the main show (there's CBB but like that doesn't' really count in my opinion).

  • @alexhirsch5738

    In the four years since this video, we've had Michie who did kind of win the first HoH by being elected the Camp Director and we had Cody win the week 1 HoH and then steamroll. But then we had the Epic Frenchie flameout of BB23, the power flipping on Daniel in BB24, and a relatively underbaked HoH power in BB25. The first HoH is certainly over-represented among winners and presents a strong path to the end, but there's also now a stronger sense that in order to find a dominant alliance and run the season, you don't NEED to include the HoH or even form week 1.

  • @alexhirsch5738
    @alexhirsch5738 5 лет назад

    Mix it into both of these two strategies. Win the first (or second) HOH because you want the power dynamic to revolve around you. But throw stuff after week one or two once you have the safety because it won't matter if you look unthreatening. Take Jessica from BB19 for example. She was part of a strong alliance, but once things started to fall apart, the house had a real chance to evict her, and chose a floater instead because she was unthreatening to them and weak at the time. Cody coming back was the worst thing for her game, otherwise she could have been swalloed as a number for another stronger alliance. Win the first HOH not as a competition-based strategy, but as an alliance-based strategy. You get the best of both options: either a strong alliance to carry you, or an under the radar game to float you. there's mo reason you cant have both

    I think that as First HOH you automatically emerge as a leader personality. Sometimes that goes well i.e. Tyler, and sometimes it goes horribly i.e. Mike Boogie. It’s up to the first HOH to prove to the house that they are not a target and that they are approachable and not just considered as a threat.

    I keep seeing today many articles about racism on the show. Instead of blaming the guy that won, why don't people blame the producers for not having a more inclusive cast?
    Because to say that guy should have stayed because he was black, is racist.
    Don't single someone out for their skin, whether it's in a good way or bad. They are more than their skin color.
    And picking someone because they are black, means not choosing someone else because they aren't black. Which is, surprise, also racist.

    • @susanramirez
      @susanramirez 4 года назад

      In that case wouldn't the producers be doing exactly what you're saying is wrong? It looks like they try to cast based on the the actual demographics of the country. So if they're looking to cast more minorities they would probably be going out of their way to find more while throwing out the majority of applications because they aren't the right color or LGBT.

    So it entirely depends on the player. If someone knows they are strong at endurance/athletic comps, or someone knows they are good at the social stuff, forming friendships, hiding behind others players, then throw the first HOH. But if your goal is to form alliances through power, then go for it.

  • @CalamariAtari
    @CalamariAtari 5 лет назад +1

    I voted that I would throw the first hoh, but after watching this video, I have changed my mind. Only because I think savvy players will realize I'm trying to throw it. Ovi did a good job of throwing it in the middle of the pack. But if I was a player, I'd be very suspicious of Tommy throwing it right at the end. I suppose throwing it can be a good move, but it also depends on how it's thrown.
