  • This talk was called 'Some Objections' in Chapter 2 of Lewis' book 'Mere Christianity'.
Illustrations of the Moral Law/Natural Law found in other times and cultures are taken from the appendix to the book 'The Abolition of Man' by C.S. Lewis and is available for viewing here: www.amazon.com/...
You can find the book here: www.amazon.com/...
You can find the audio track here: www.amazon.com....
(This broadcast took place at the zenith of Nazi power, with the rapid invasion of Russia in full swing and hundreds of thousands of Soviet soldiers being taken prisoner.)
Correction: I discovered from old magazines that this broadcast was actually made on the 3rd of September, 1941 and was Broadcast #5 in series called 'Listener’s Questions'.

20 years ago a friend gave me this book, I started reading it and a few chapters in the Lord took hold of me and I knew at that very moment he was Lord and Saviour. I'll thank Lewis when I get to heaven.

What can I say except thank you for uploading these videos. it is not easy to read C.S. Lewis but your work make it so accessible into his thoughts. C.S.Lewis is so relevant to our days than ever before. The more I know God the more I love Him----God is awesome and most beautiful and may all praise and worship belong to Him. And we thank God for given us His Son Jesus Christ who'se immaculate moral life beyond reproach. And we thank God for C.S. Lewis to have used his intelligence to the "praise of His glory."

Lewis answers a common query here:
Q: What of the modern objection - that the ethical standards of different cultures differ so widely that there is no common tradition at all?
A: "The answer is that this is a lie - a good, solid, resounding lie. If a man will go into a library and spend a few days with the Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics he will soon discover the massive unanimity of the practical reason in man. From the Babylonian Hymn to Samos, from the Laws of Manu, the Book of the Dead, the Analects, the Stoics, the Platonists, from Australian aborigines and Redskins, he will collect the same triumphantly monotonous denunciations of oppression, murder, treachery, and falsehood, the same injunctions of kindness to the aged, the young, and the weak, of almsgiving and impartiality and honesty. He may be a little surprised (I certainly was) to find that precepts of mercy are more frequent than precepts of justice; but he will no longer doubt that there is such a thing as the Law of Nature. There are, of course, differences. There are even blindnesses in particular cultures - just as there are savages who cannot count up to twenty. But the pretence that we are presented with a mere chaos - that no outline of universally accepted value shows through - is simply false and should be contradicted in season and out of season wherever it is met. Far from finding a chaos, we find exactly what we should expect if good is indeed something objective and reason the organ whereby it is apprehended - that is, a substantial agreement with considerable local differences of emphasis and, perhaps, no one code that includes everything. (Lewis, ‘The Poison of Subjectivism’).
If you would like to see actual instances of the ‘Universal Moral Law’ found at all times and in all places, I have included C.S. Lewis’ list from ‘The Abolition of Man’: drive.google.com/file/d/1HkHEBgXDPIOZhNMahUfWADYaCGckjIO0/view?usp=sharing

I have just one question. Let’s say I value the morals of one society as better than my own, based off of that society. Would that be the “better” society as the standard that I measure my own “worse” one off of? Or would I need another standard (an absolute morality) to choose the “better” one as a measuring stick to use on the “worse” one? I guess that would mean that to choose a better measurement as being better, you need something original to base it off of.
