Iv always been in love with the sound of the steel guitar and iv made it a life goal of mine to master the instrument. So thank you for making this guide. This was a good start.
Obviously the people complaining about this video aren’t interested in learning anything. This is an excellent lesson on what to know about getting the right equipment. And it didn’t cost a dime.
People are justified in their complaints of this video. I don't care personally, but I totally understand why people are complaining. And of course, people are interested in learning; that's why they clicked on the video in the first place! The reason people are complaining is because this is not a lesson, as much as it's an introduction to the lap steel guitar. I'm not sure about you, but I've had lessons before and this is clearly not a lesson. This is an introduction to the instrument, and overview of the particular instrument that he owns, along with some recommendations. An introduction is fine, but let's all admit that this is not a lesson, so it should not be labeled as a lesson. People are complaining because, maybe, the title should reflect exactly what this video is accurately, so people don't waste their time clicking a video that does not serve their purpose. I am sure there would be zero complaints for this video if it just said: "An Introduction to The Lap Steel Guitar". This dude is basically getting tons of views on a misleading video title.
@@RumbleFish69if this is predatory clickbait, I want it. Clickbait is way worse than this guy just saying lesson in the title. Fucking relax and get a life.
I hope it worked out for you. Mountain dulcimer also sits in your lap and you can use just your thumb and one finger to chord or use a noter. so also possibly an option for limited mobility in one arm. another option if your arm permits strumming or finger picking with your left hand, try a left handed guitar. You can try contacting a local music teacher and explain your problem and they can help you find out if you can even comfortable use the information and what alternatives there might be.
Thank you. I'm getting ready to buy a lap steel and was looking for this kind of info so I don't waste my money. I needed to know about strings also. I'm a harp player and it took 2 mistakes before I learned what to look for
as a total beginner never played and wanted to find out ALL about what a steel guitar can do and what to look for when buying etc etc etc - I thought this was a great vid... go look somewhere else if you need more than that cuz obviously you are NOT a beginner ! errrgh shoulda called it INSTRUCTIONS so no asses needed to comment. Oh, and I see... it says at the end>>> full lesson go to : Thanks Dave !!! Exactly what I was looking for !
The reason I'm interested. Years ago I took lead guitar only to find out my left hand pinky refused to move smooth and quick causing issues. That created and issue with my teacher and his attitude. Top it off I had an accident with my hand, hammer and break drum cutting my ligament on the finger next to the same pinky. It never healed right. So here I am at 68 and retired bored out of my mind. Watching you play if I'm correct my 2 bad fingers don't come into play as far as plunking strings.
I completely agree with you about getting what you pay for, but with one exception. The rogue rls 1 lap steel is $80 and I haven't tuned it in months but I have checked and it is very little off. It also sounds great but I can't figure out how to get that pedal steel sound out of it. It sounds more like the lick at the beginning of the ballad of Curtis leow. It doesn't sound bad, but it's not the sound I want. It sounds more like an electrified dobro. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Buy a Peavey Power Slide. I got one and it is miles ahead of anything else. $200.00 with a gig bag and slide. It's a blast. Buy what you want, but I can't recommend them enough. No, I have no stock in Peavey.
harley benton slider ii is pretty sweet too, especially for the 90USD/79EUR price tag. gig bag and slide, too. sounds nice out the box although you'd probably want some better strings to go with it.
Stupid question, but what if I had sharp fingernails instead of the finger picks? Would that effect the sound or is it not advisable? I've seen people use longer sharp finger nails for guitars and was wondering if it would work for these too?
Thanks for doing this video Dave . What's your opinion of the Rondo Music SX Lap 1 and 2 models? Do you know if they hold their tune and have good tone?
Good video. ..I was thinking about getting one of those airline guitars...I was wondering if you think a Duesenburg string bender would fit on your guitar?
Round wound? Never heard or saw any guitarist playing with it on lap steel or pedal steel guitar. Round wound is mostly for jazz guitarist, and less for steel-guitarist. After all... it's evidently a choice you make or not!
I'd like to know whether the guitar matches with all tunings. It seems that there are guitars that are not made for f.i. C6-tuning, or A-tuning etc. Are some guitars only made for 1 tuning ? Is the Airline you use capable for C6-tuning? Thanx in advance.
Oh dear! After this, I moved straight onto another site, where I found a music lesson rather than a long winded talk on equipment. This vid put me off going to the next vid. There is no need whatsoever to drole on and on, people just need to know if it's worth learning to play a particular instrument rather than which one to buy, sorry but far too much talk and not enough musicality!
You guys and the "you taught me nothing but talked about equipment and how it works..." comments? Is it reading comprehension or what? It says for beginners. As a beginner, you ought to learn about the equipment before you can learn to play it. Duh....maybe a better sight for you would be XXX
spends way too much time telling me what I need to buy rather than getting into teaching me how to play. once I learn to play I'll spend my money. this video is worthless to me having never played a lap steel
+Frank Greenway This is about four minutes of a half hour or so lesson. This is just a sample, and I think proper equipment is an important part of getting started. Sorry it had such a negative impact on you. Dave
Equipment and how it works... taught "nothing"?? I need to learn about what equipment to buy, and why... before I can decide if learning lap steel is for me or not, I need to know what to look for, what I should expect to pay for beginner equipment, type of strings, why I can't just use a regular guitar on my lap (which I also don't play, but might have assumed is all I need), etc. Some of us need this sampler intro because we know nothing... If you wanted an actual lesson, you could have gone into the actual lessons themselves. For the rest of us, it is a beginner's blessing.
It's called click-bait. These guys have no intention of giving away their knowledge for free. So they all just ramble for the first ten minutes or so, so that when you see a 10 minute lesson, you think, well, even if they're charging, I might get some little tidbit out of this for free. Uh-uh. It's all about making you come to their site and pay, pay, pay. Which pisses me off. Cause you know they didn't pay for lessons. Somebody they knew showed them stuff and now they want to charge you for all their "work". BS!!
This is an intro to the lessons. A sample of what to learn. I don't have the intrument... I don't know what strings are recommended... I am even less than a beginner because I needed to know even what to look for in a purchase. This was valuable to me, to help me decide if I want to invest and pursue laptop steel guitar lessons. If you wanted an actual lesson you should have paid attention to the instructions to go to the website for actual lessons.
Did you pay attention? This is an introduction, with hints on what type of equipment to look for before even trying to play. I learned high action as opposed to thinking I could just use a regular guitar... heavier strings than a guitar... price range of what to expect to pay for a lap steel guitar... how he has the strings tuned for A tuning... I don't even play a regular guitar, so this was all valuable to me. (I suppose you think learning 1+1=2 in elementary school is a waste of time, because you already know it)
Iv always been in love with the sound of the steel guitar and iv made it a life goal of mine to master the instrument. So thank you for making this guide. This was a good start.

Was thinking of learning guitar. Can’t supronate my left arm, so need flat guitar. Just love that twang, lights my soul!
I hope it worked out for you. Thanks for the great lesson! I’ve tried learning from books but without success. Your method of teaching really helps.
Thank you. I'm getting ready to buy a lap steel and was looking for this kind of info so I don't waste my money. I needed to know about strings also. I'm a harp player and it took 2 mistakes before I learned what to look for
What about the tone bar, or the finger picks? Those are important too.
5 minutes, and my only take-away is to get "dobro-gauge" strings. can anyone recommend a video where they show you how to play it?
Thank you so much! Really appreciate this video.
There sure wasn't much information on this video clip. It makes me wonder whether the $10 is money well spent or not....
Get to how to play
I like the fret markers they look really cool.
as a total beginner never played and wanted to find out ALL about what a steel guitar can do and what to look for when buying etc etc etc - I thought this was a great vid... go look somewhere else if you need more than that cuz obviously you are NOT a beginner ! errrgh shoulda called it INSTRUCTIONS so no asses needed to comment. Should I learn to play acoustic before I learn lap steel or dobro?
What is the rest of the videos for beginners?
There are too much. I’d like to have a playlist
Start with 6 or 8 string decision. Then guages then tuning... Thanks.
Im going to learn that Instrument i need it for my video game soundtrack.
Same here 😭😅
Did you get it?
Ayoooo same
I use a Martin backpacker

I have a Rogue as well! Blue. I have it tuned to an open C, because I’m trying learn Hawaiian tunes and surf anthems.
Puoi indicare dei libri in italiano per imparare a suonare la lap steel? Grazie mille
Buy a Peavey Power Slide. I got one and it is miles ahead of anything else. $200.00 with a gig bag and slide. It's a blast. Buy what you want, but I can't recommend them enough. No, I have no stock in Peavey.
what about Gretsch?
harley benton slider ii is pretty sweet too, especially for the 90USD/79EUR price tag. gig bag and slide, too. sounds nice out the box although you'd probably want some better strings to go with it.
Does anyone knows if it's okay to play with a regular folk guitar ?
+Silver12331 Not sure what you mean? On your lap with the strings raised? Will work, but the spacing is a bit close together.
I don't use flat wound strings on the lap steel...due to the fact that I prefer the roundwounds whenusd with overdrive. Dave
I have an Eight string Lap steel Supra. Where can I find lessons for this?
Google
+Nick Brown Not sure, maybe look into the Steel Guitar Forum. Good Luck! Dave
Stupid question, but what if I had sharp fingernails instead of the finger picks? Would that effect the sound or is it not advisable? I've seen people use longer sharp finger nails for guitars and was wondering if it would work for these too?
I build my own sets and they are Heavy! I can't remember the exact gauge, but it's similar to a dobro gauged set.
Hey pal! Are you still actively building?
What pedal are you using? I love this sound, but I'm musically illiterate.
No pedal on a lap steel guitar.
Thanks for doing this video Dave . What's your opinion of the Rondo Music SX Lap 1 and 2 models? Do you know if they hold their tune and have good tone?
Who else felt like they were watching spongebob in that intro? Lol
I’d love to learn how to play Santo n Johnny

I use the Nickel Wound EXL148 Daddario String on My Lap Steel Guitars Nice Video ( Great Hat )
30 yrs, never had, leaned thaank you
I wonder...what lap steel would sound closer to Hank Williams' sort if sound? Below $500...
amp and pedals have a lot to do with that also.
Gold tone
what if you have a 1930s lap steel looks way different to that and its not electric worth a bundle
You, my friend, must be a mediocrity afflicted neophyte.
Basically, you're a dumb bitch. I bet your life is a three ring shit show.
Jonathan Swanson my good Jonathan
Gorgeous.
its so nice

You have to go to: www.onlinelessonvideos.com to get the full lesson
I wish I had one :/
It would be nice to tell people to get flat wound strings and not round wound.
👍👍👍👌
lol. That sounds like Spongebob-music.
me too lol
hoyl so accurate
Dunno lap steels were originally used for Hawaiian music which makes sense for spongebob music haha
I think that hawaiian music does not fit into spongebob.
yeah it should be native american music or heavy metal
No lesson here; just ad for buy my lessons
I’m off to look for a proper tutor 😋
This is a Slight Technical intro, not a Lap Steel Lesson!
This isn't a lesson it's a sales pitch.
you taught me nothing but talked about equipment and how it works...
You have to go to: www.onlinelessonvideos.com to get the full lesson

Fallout...
You didn't show a goddamn thing
That's not a lap steel guitar lesson.
just wasted 2 mins of my life click bate
Not a lesson.

ok...most people allready have the instrument with the strings..too much talk about nothing and string gauges. Get to the lessons.

All these clowns with these videos talk for 20 minutes before they show you anything then they talk and talk and talk waste of time

As a lesson its useless
Waste of time.

Thanks for nothin! Waste of time!
