Castle of illusion on the sms was a masterpiece. Many deem it better than the megadrive version and I agree. Thank you for giving the Master System the love it deserves. It was my first console and I have fond memories playing these classic games.
Castle of Illusion definitely has my interest the most of the bunch here, especially since I like the Genesis version quite a bit. Montezuma's Revenge is a good time, and didn't realize there was an SMS version of it. The Alex Kidd games I tried before...but those definitely didn't click with me lol. A platformer that NEEDS to be covered here is Ninja Gaiden on SMS! Such an underappreciated installment! Great video, TC!
Try these fantastic platformers for the SMS: - Wonderboy 3; top tier game, still is today - Ninja Gaiden; different and waaay better than the NES version - Psychic World; such smooth gameplay - Asterix; platforming pur-sang - Land of Illusion; better than Castle of Illusuon - Sonic 1, 2, and Chaos; unique and more platform gameplay than the Megadrive/Genesis And there are even so much more great platformers on the SMS. Keep up the good work!
Amazing choices for platformers! Many of these will be covered in upcoming videos that I have scheduled. I'd love to fully play through Ninja Gaiden and experience all the differences from the NES version. Psychic World is top-notch and I love the atmosphere and plot. Thanks for watching!
The paper, scissors, rock boss battles in Miracle World are not chance. You can get the Telepathy Ball in one of the stages to see what the boss is thinking. Prior to that, there's a pattern they always follow so you just need to remember for next time.
Wonder Boy III ("The Dragon's Trap") was actually pretty cool. I can't remember if it was on both SMS and Genesis or only one, but it was quite a game.
The Alex the kid series looks like I could get some enjoyment out of it. I remember playing it at your house but I remember getting stuck. The mickey game was tough as nails when we played it but I do love platformers
Nice review, platformers are more of my type of game and I've even played a few of these! Also I just googled this- did you know Alex Kidd is NOT a monkey?? 😮🤯
I've played all of these. Ghouls 'n Ghosts is wonderful. The shop/power-up system is a nice wrinkle, and it starts to feel really good after you upgrade your boots. Alex Kidd in Miracle World is my favorite of the series. I know that it's objectively worse than Shinobi World, but I have a ton of nostalgia for it. Counterpoint, though- I like Zillion II way better than the first. The first Zillion feels like a less fun clone of Impossible Mission, and I never liked having to keep my manual handy to remember the computer sequences. Zillion II, however, is fast-paced and considerably more true to the anime. It could use a little more background variety, but then again, the first Zillion has zero variety in its backgrounds after you leave the surface in the opening.
I don't think anyone would consider Alex Kidd in Shinobi World to be better than Miracle World. Miracle World is easily in the top 5 of most people's list. Well it certainly is in mine.
I love the counterpoint. Comments like these are why I enjoy making these videos as we all have different opinions and thoughts. I fully agree that Zillion is a Impossible Mission clone although much more polished. I think I was just hoping for more of the same since I enjoyed the game a ton. When I played Zillion II, I was surprised by the gameplay change, although I fully recognize that it's a very good game. Just different. Thanks for the great comment!
I've played them all. I've only beat ghouls 'n ghosts and castle of illusion. The rock paper sciccors fights have a set pattern at the start. If you loose a round it is random after that.
I love this guy, nobody else ( u know , almost ) loves to hash out great SMS information/ topics as much as myself and I was playing this console when my big br😮ther and I received the Hang On / Safari Hunt ,zapper inc.set for Christmas,in late 1988 , thanks to our brilliant mother ,may she rest peacefully, and never looked back, cept for all the looking back nostalgically and appreciatively, but I think you know what i mean, and yes T.C. you should definitely take a run at Psycho 🦊, just don't let his jumping ability drive you insane, like it did to me when I originally borrowed it off my best Sega friend,Darren, back in 1990. Anyway love channel, you great ,sega awesome, keep up good work and thanks
Great videobuddy. I really enjoyed that. I'm in the middle of listing my games for an action platformer vid myself. We really were spoilt for choice on master system for this genre. Some cracking games you've included. Definitely recommend Land of Illusion as well for you to try. 👌 Keep the master system flame burning bright Seth 🔥
We are very spoiled for platformers on the SMS. I have four more videos on this topic haha. I'll be sure to keep my eyes peeled for yours! Land of Illusion is also top notch! I grabbed that last year. Thanks for watching buddy.
I'm a complete Ghouls n Ghosts freak. I've played every game, and nearly all ports. I have the arcade PCB even. :D I always really liked the SMS interpretation though. It was close to the original, while adding in a few kind of cool things like the armor types, etc.
The SMS port of Ghouls N' Ghosts was my first and I played it until I finished it (though I can't remember if I did the play through twice - I think I did). All the other ports are just too hard for me. Especially the C64 port - I can't get past the third level on that one.
I love a good platformer. They have fallen out of favor, but I think there is a lot of value there. 1:11 whoa, this is triggering some childhood memories. I must have seen this one somewhere when I was a kid. I don't think I played it, just saw someone else playing it. 2:02 the backgrounds on this one are a little abrasively solid, haha. It looks like a fun one though. I like the destructible floors. 2:58 classic! I've played a little of this as an adult, but I really need to go through it all. 3:52 this one makes me think of Adventure Island on the NES, haha and there you called it out 5:04 there is value in an easier title meant for kids... but they are harder for me to want to go back to unless I already have nostalgia there 5:58 always sad when a sequel strays too far 6:55 wait! I've played the MSDOS version and the GB version, but I've never seen this version... and it looks better than those 2 versions I'm familiar with! I'll have to try this port. 7:48 while this looks like a cute one for kids, it actually looks really solid too. The graphics seem really polished. Yeah, infinite continues is definitely a kid-title. 9:20 I only tried this one as an adult, and it was crazy hard! I think I did the SNES version though. 10:24 I played the remake, but I need to play the orig platformer still. Looks awesome and highly polished! Excellent list, man! Hopefully there are enough of us oldies nostalgic about platformers to make this video work out for ya 😀
Platformers are one of my favorite genres! I really enjoyed watching you play Super Lucky's Tale. LOL at the background comment, yes they can be a bit harsh. Yes, Adventure Island on the NES and Wonder Boy on the SMS have one of the most confusing fates. It's a fascinating business decision. I agree I hate when sequels change it up too much but it's still a good game, I just wish they didn't name is Zillion II. Ha! That is really cool you've played it on the MSDOS and GB!! Psycho Fox is awesome and it has unique physics with the running and jumping. Ghouls N Ghosts is brutal! I'm not very good at it. Thanks for watching buddy!
Excellent list , I played almost all of these . The nolstalgia for the Master System makes me wish that Sega and other companies would keep making new Master System games .
I can't wait to see you cover the best Alex Kidd, which is undeniably Alex Kidd in Shinobi World 👌 Watching Castle of Illusion with the Alex Kidd music was a little weird 😅
Haha I never thought about how weird that might be to hear other music. Alex Kidd is a cool franchise, I wish the PS5 remake would have sold better... but still. Thanks for watching!
Don't forget to cover the Korean exclusive Super Boy series (kidding). In case you haven't heard of them, they're essentially bootlegs of the Super Mario series. The first two look like SMB1, while the third has some of the same graphics as the previous two while trying to make it look like Super Mario World. The fourth (and final?) one has better graphics and a stronger SMW look to it.
Great Topic, i love SMS Platformers, did grow up with the system, but Ghost House (i do love it and have the Sega Card Complete), Alex Kidd 2 and Teddy Boy are definetly not Top 10 material. Asterix, Lucky Dime Caper and Sonic 1 need to be there. Wonder Boy 3 - you can argue is it an adventure game or platformer... I played through Ghouls n Ghosts on Master System this week once again, such a great, approachable port with unlimited continues and permanent power ups, giving you different magic (shield is a life saver), more hit points, faster boots and stronger weapons to gradually upgrade and keep even after continuing. Everyone can finish it eventually. I love to play through Psycho Fox, Castle of Illusion, Lucky Dime Caper, Sonic 1, Asterix or Smurfs when i have 30-45 minutes to waste, very enjoyable games.
That is awesome you've had a lot of experience with platformers on the SMS. This is just part 1 of 5, so I'll be covering the others soon so stay tuned! Wonder Boy III is my favorite game of all-time on the SMS, and I covered that one in my RPG SMS video, but I'll be touching a lot more on it soon with some personal videos. Cool to hear how much you enjoy Ghouls N Ghosts. I need to play the Smurfs game more and give them a shot. Thanks for watching!

The Illusion games are master pieces. I have a grudge against Psycho Fox because the game is great, but I just can't handle it correctly; the fox just slides around.
Haunted House has me convinced how we'll leave OUR worldy possessions to be claimed. Worst case of Montezuma's Revenge was that place and 3rd and Maple.... I almost bought Psycho Fox but was told it's good, but not quite to the price it sometimes goes for. GnG games, oh how I adore but am terrible at thee....

Wonderboy 3 was lightyears ahead of its time and the first true metroidvania. I've played through it 80 times, at least. It's the best sms game IMO.
The paper, scissors, rock boss battles in Miracle World are not chance. You can get the Telepathy Ball in one of the stages to see what the boss is thinking. Prior to that, there's a pattern they always follow so you just need to remember for next time.

Master System fun! Some great games here 👍
Platformers are a blast, thanks for watching buddy.
“Ghoul Luck?” Really? Ugh. SUBSCRIBED! lol
Haha terrible puns and mispronouncing words are what I'm infamous for. Thanks for watching and subbing!
The Alex the kid series looks like I could get some enjoyment out of it. I remember playing it at your house but I remember getting stuck. The mickey game was tough as nails when we played it but I do love platformers
It's a really polished platforming game, but Sega kinda abandoned it for Sonic. That mickey game is awesome, I love it. You should try it out again.
Nice list. I could not get passed the Ro Sham Bo boss battles for Alex Kidd.
Yeah I don't like that gimmick.... I'd rather win from skill than my luck.
