    Chod my man you are sitting on a gold mine now. Spectres is a masterpiece, one of the best albums of the 70s. BOC has never really gotten the credit they deserve as an all time great band, but I think at least you're starting to catch on.

  • @redahroun
    @redahroun 2 года назад +10

    BOC is a band that you can't judge by their radio hits. So much of what DIDN'T get play are their best works

  • @toddymac
    @toddymac 2 года назад +26

    This same album, 'Spectres' ends with a brilliant (IMO) two song set, both related with their supernatural 'vampire' context. The first and the penultimate album track is a called "I Love The Night" with a beautiful riff (actually a slowed down and slightly re-tempo version of the riff from Don't Fear The Reaper) within a 'love' song as the main protagonist finds himself being transformed into a vampire. This is immediately segued into the final song "Nosferatu". A strong rocker which not only has a great melody, but also with a wonderfully haunting undergroove of prime eeriness. The rolling piano work is genius! The song, lyrically, is the Dracula story as Nosferatu the vampire visits Lucy and slowly drains her lifeblood until she eventually is able to overpower him in a moment of passionate weakness, it truly must be heard to appreciate the musicality and storytelling this band possesses
    I've felt these songs were two of the most perfectly entwined in theme and as companion pieces are a brilliant masterpiece. For me one of the great album closures of the rock era.

      So true!
      There are so many great songs on Spectres. Only BOC would put two vampire songs back to back.

      @@toddymac Yeah. I remember the critics of the time bagging on them for two vampire songs in a row. Yeah two great songs that are totally different musically and ideologically. 'I Love the Night' is pro-vampire, and 'Nosferatu' is anti-vampire!

    Before there was Metallica, there was Blue Oyster Cult! The first time I heard them was in late 1972 as I’m walking down my barracks hallway at Fort Hood, Texas. It was their first album blaring out of an Army buddy’s barracks room and I stopped dead in my tracks to ask him who they were. From that first album I’ve been hooked ever since.😊❤

  • @JohnHoulgate
    @JohnHoulgate Год назад +2

    One of the things that makes Blue Oyster Cult stand out is that some of the members are heavily jazz influenced. Albert Bouchard, the drummer, was inspired to play drums by Gene Krupa. Donald Roeser (Buck Dharma), lead guitarist, was the son of a weekend jazz Sax player.
    Making shifts and transitions, building up to crescendoes is in the band's musical DNA. Lyrically, they go places other bands of their era would never think to go.
    Highly recommend listening to their second album Tyranny & Mutation. You'll hear Albert Bouchard's jazz infused drumming on songs like Baby Ice Dog, OD'ed on Life and Teen Archer. If you get their first live album, On Your Feet or On Your Knees, you'll hear Buck wail on his leads like a Jazz trumpeter. Truly remarkable stuff you won't hear from just any Hard Rock band.

    BOC can and proves they can do it all. I remember getting into them in the early 80's and how fun it was exploring all their albums. Each one was a completely different adventure. Those were fun times as a teen. No band quite like them ever and they are sadly underrated and under appreciated still.

    Great choice from, IMO, their greatest "commercial" release, "Spectres". Show me another tune from a rock band that features vocals from a boy's choir. And never has their been a greater BOC tune that nicely displays both Buck's vocals and a bit of Eric's. "I Love The Night", also from this release, was sometimes referred to as "son of Reaper" when this album was released in 1977. I always thought it stood out on its own.

    You should also check out a solo album by BOC guitarist Buck Dharma (Donald Roeser) from 1982 titled ‘Flat Out’. The song ‘That Summer Night’ is easily as good as anything he’s done with BOC. Keep bringing these lost gems back in the spotlight. These songs remind me of vivid memories from school, thanks so much.

    It was interesting watching your reaction, but it seems you only reacted to the musicianship and the singing, while either missing or ignoring the dark tragedy of the story.
    If you read the lyrics, this is all about the finalization of a suicide pact of a group of 94 motorcycle gang members, all veterans, who had chosen to die in a final battle, even if it had to be among themselves, rather than fall further to age, illness, and weakness. Some died during the drunken events of the night (they were buried with their bikes), the rest took sides by pulling colored cloths from a sack before their final fight began. Regardless of which side won the battle, the final killer was a desert sandstorm.
