that's surprising that they dry clean it everyday, I know in many shows they just sanitize it daily and dry clean once a fortnight as to not damage the costume.
I highly doubt they dry clean it every day, I think they just wanted to show the full process for this video. There is actually no point to dry cleaning it so much, the girls wear undergarments so the dress takes a while to actually get 'dirty'.
Couple of insights for the why: 1: white picks up all colors easily (duh). 2: Christine is thrown around / on the deck of the stage A LOT in this dress. So I am sure it picks up quiet a bit from the stage. 3: other actors (namely the phantom) has a lot of makeup on him (duh) and even with proper setting of the makeup by that point in the show he’s been in it for roughly 2 hours and so I am sure between sweat, oils, humidity and other factors that is a good chance some might get on to any costumes including this on.
The actress is only wearing a corset up top, so the dress is not protected from underarm sweat, odors and stains. Those can't be allowed to set into the garment.
Something hilarious I’d like to point out! She’s wearing a corset and she’s doing just fine. She can sing those high, beautiful notes, no problem. Yet big celebrities will complain so much about having to wear one for historical movies. 😂
Actually, I think it IS kinda hard, but you get used to doing it every night, right? (Oh it rhymed) but it supports your voice quite a bit. Your posture gets better meaning you can breathe better, and it’s a good work out running in it, (lol)
I saw her on Broadway and she is AMAZING! Phantom is the best show ever and costumes are magnificent! I cannot say enough things on how phenomenon Phantom of the Opera is!
Hazel Spark the first musical that I saw on broadway was Hello Dolly with Carol Channing - while the costumes weren't as spectacular as POTO - for the mid-70's they were awesome -esp Ms Channing's costumes - if I remember rightly there was a stupendous hat that gorgeous huge but gorgeous
I was also thinking along those lines: why all this rush? Why don't they have two dresses? What if there is some sort of an accident and the one dress is not available? Then what?
Omg this vid was so interesting! I saw the show a bit ago for my birthday and it was magical, but I didn't know this entire process was behind the dress
wow i always wondred about these kind of changed of costumes! i love theater not just because of acting and singing but because of the costumes make the show!. more complicated process than i thought.
Ok for the record this is done once or twice weekly as each actress has more than one dress of the same copy to alternate each day. I can't imagine the process given to Beauty and Beast's 2 elaborate Belle Gowns.
Whoa. I assumed that a show with as massive of a production as "Phantom" would have several sets of each of the principal characters' costumes. You'd think they'd want to have multiples in case something goes wrong at the dry cleaners or something.
They usually do. Unless the costume is super expensive or elaborate. The wedding dress is probably too expensive to have multiples of. Especially when you factor in that the costumes have to be replaced or refitted when the actresses change.
I love that he has his focus, taking care of the wig, and just stays out of the way as best he can to let the dresser do what she is focusing on. Also note he's wearing a tool belt. I do the same when I'm dressing actors. And when I first had the idea, I thought it was so original and innovative, haha.
In the olden days this was how women would clean their clothes. Before dry cleaning became available, the women or their servants, would take the dress apart and sponge clean it. After the pieces were dry the dress would be re-sewn. No handy hooks or zippers, unfortunately. 🙂
I wish I had fallen into the Phantom's fandom before my wedding. I would have definitely have used something similar to Christine's dress. Although the one that I used was also very... theatrical, I guess, with a victorian style and a top hat.
It can't be white or it is gonna looks blue under the stage lights, so they need to make it off-white. World tour wedding dress is also off-white fainted green dress just to let you know.
it's crazy how they have to make these dresses look elaborate but have to be easy to get in and out of, amazing job whoever designs and sews them
Maria Björnson 😊
Should make it like that for all dresses tbh. After a long day at work nobody wants uncomfortable clothes on longer than necessary

White tends to show sweat stains quickly.

Agreed.

I've heard opera singers actually like to wear them for the support! I cringed slightly at her wearing it against her skin though
Alessandra Hayes I’d like to try a corset one day. I wonder if it’d support my diaphragm. I also sing, you see.
I'm currently trying to make myself one for that reason 😄

• Purple Panda Playz • Yeah, i could definitely see the appeal of that.
So much bts action for one dress but one very important dress.
Props to the dress maker(s) who made a wedding dress strong enough to be dry cleaned every day.
Jean the Second they even hand sew jewels etc,
I saw her on Broadway and she is AMAZING! Phantom is the best show ever and costumes are magnificent! I cannot say enough things on how phenomenon Phantom of the Opera is!
**PHANTOMenon (sorry that was horrible but I couldnt help it)
It was my very first Broadway show ever and I was front row, everything was amazing!
omg it must have been great! I saw it in Toronto for my birthday a bit ago and it was magical but I've never seen a musical on broadway
same I saw her in NYC >\\\
Hazel Spark the first musical that I saw on broadway was Hello Dolly with Carol Channing - while the costumes weren't as spectacular as POTO - for the mid-70's they were awesome -esp Ms Channing's costumes - if I remember rightly there was a stupendous hat that gorgeous huge but gorgeous
I always thought more than one copy of a dress was made, due to wear and tear and washing time.
Traybuff There is! Usually one dress works nightly, though, unless another actress is going on (who has her own dress).
I was also thinking along those lines: why all this rush? Why don't they have two dresses? What if there is some sort of an accident and the one dress is not available? Then what?
Each actress should have a spare, I believe.
This is a way more complicated process than I expected
People never realize now much work goes into costumes!
That fact that u don't realize isn't mean that all other people are a same idiots!
There's a really great documentary about the Dry cleaners of Broadway. I highly recommend it!
Wow that was so interesting!! Would love to see more videos like this!!
lo ed this. I always wondered hownshe managed to get from the Don Juan dress to the Wedding dress so fast.
Merthurmad And she does it multiple times during the show, too.
Meg has even quicker changes.
Omg this vid was so interesting! I saw the show a bit ago for my birthday and it was magical, but I didn't know this entire process was behind the dress
So true. When I saw phantom, the wedding dress was jaw dropping and I cried watching her in it
There’s so much action for this one important dress it’s amazing
Gosh, I watched this before I got into the Phans community, and this actually kinda got me in! The costume design
It's amazing how oblivious we in the audience are to all this. It's gotten me thinking about all the quick changes she and other actors must have.
The real magic happens backstage!Wonderful video!
wow i always wondred about these kind of changed of costumes! i love theater not just because of acting and singing but because of the costumes make the show!. more complicated process than i thought.
I love costumes so much 😭😭😭. It’s the only award for the tonys I genuinely care about.
the dress is even better seeing how much went into it
So many people putting their efforts into this art piece
I want my Wedding Dress to look like Christine's.
i’ve thought that they’d had 2 dresses meaning that they don’t have to dry clean and bring back the same dress every day
I can’t believe they wash the dress after every shows. That’s crazy! 😊
Can't believe they send it without a guard. Someone could hold it for ransom! I hope they have a spare.
Such a massive skirt. Interesting footwork necessary to back up in that dress at the curtain call.
I could just sit here and watch and watch this!!
Ok for the record this is done once or twice weekly as each actress has more than one dress of the same copy to alternate each day.
I can't imagine the process given to Beauty and Beast's 2 elaborate Belle Gowns.
It takes that much work to care for one dress...damn that's amazing.
They do, possibly excluding the wedding dress. There are multiple iterations of each costume, and there is at least one double for the mirror bride.
They probably also have another one for two show days.
Amazing how much work this goes into a dress!
It gets dry cleaned every night? wow!
I want to wear dresses like this, can we bring this back in fashion??
YESSS
I'm in
so then.... wear one?
no
Cannot wait to see Phantom come to Playhouse Square in July!!!!!
Great video! Thanks for sharing! Wish they could do similar videos about the rest of the dresses and costumes!
Wow okay that is my future wedding dress....if I ever make it that far.... :)
I was always curious as to how do they change from the dress she wears in Point of No Return to the heavy wedding dress so quickly.
Wow! This is super cool!!!!! I wish I could see Phantom ;( I keep asking to go for my birthday so hopefully I think I might go for my b-day!!! :)
Yay to the wardrobe team!
Omg I want tht dress I'm going to c this show this summer I saved money and I'm so excited
Such a beautiful dress!
I’m not even gonna get married but I want that dress
There is LEON😂
Lydia Rose langdon WE'RE ON WITH LEON
I love that he has his focus, taking care of the wig, and just stays out of the way as best he can to let the dresser do what she is focusing on. Also note he's wearing a tool belt. I do the same when I'm dressing actors. And when I first had the idea, I thought it was so original and innovative, haha.
Leon love leon #leonators
Really interesting and neat to watch!
In the olden days this was how women would clean their clothes. Before dry cleaning became available, the women or their servants, would take the dress apart and sponge clean it. After the pieces were dry the dress would be re-sewn. No handy hooks or zippers, unfortunately. 🙂
Every single day?? That's crazy!
Leone! I knew I saw him!
Fun fact: Christine’s Wedding Dress alone is about 35 Pounds!
I wish I had fallen into the Phantom's fandom before my wedding. I would have definitely have used something similar to Christine's dress. Although the one that I used was also very... theatrical, I guess, with a victorian style and a top hat.
If Angelina Jolie did Christine as a musical actor.
I thought it took alot of time and it was hard to put it on but now i see it only takes 15 seconds.
*50 seconds
Wow. I wanna wear it. 😍😍😍😍
that's my dream wedding dress!!! XD
heartbreaking knowing these dresses will only be making this round-trip for a few more months. 😢
Imagine if Julia Udine accidentally sprinkled some juices water on the dress😅 Nice dresses❤
I wish I was Christine
so complicated... no wonder it is CD's wedding dress
I prefer her blue dress but, this is definitely more important
I thought she looked like Anne Hathaway in the thumbnail....
LEONNNNNNNN!!!
Eu amo esse espetáculo
Omg yeah julia udine love 😍💟💟💟💟
Wish my gf/wife could quick change like that!
I'd be so worried that the dry cleaners would be late or something would go wrong while the dress wasn't with them
I think the hardest part is the one who has to hand iron it.
I want this drss
WOW
imagine having a budget for theater
does she only wear it to bow? or for other scenes?
She wears it for probably the last 15 minutes of the show, as well.
Heaven help the dry cleaners if someone accidentally drops a red sock in with the dress :-P
Muito legal!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wow
2:38 LEONE
I went to high school with Julia. Fun fact.
Blimey, that dress looks like it weighs quite a bit. 👗
Jonathan Parks, wow. 😧
How do you get this job?? I want it!
What about two show days?
ok!🤗
Lady Musical
O Dios 😲
HOW are the actresses of christine EVEN ABLE to sing the high notes in a freaking CORSETTE
*Corset oops
Is it just me that i think the dress is kinda off white and stained.
You can even tell on stage. It would distract me.
30 foot rule. You see way less from your seat. Also, real life. Things get dirty.
It’s been used for years and years. It’s a special garment.
It’s intentionally yellowed- it’s supposed to look like it’s been kept under an opera house in the sewer area
It can't be white or it is gonna looks blue under the stage lights, so they need to make it off-white. World tour wedding dress is also off-white fainted green dress just to let you know.
Who's the raoul?
Wow, this is a lot maintenance for 1 dress. 👗😧
am I dumb or does she seem to me anne hathawai?
I have to clean it every night and she seemed kind of overkill
It needs to be washed everyday? Seems a bit excessive.
Boyfriend
wow
