I have to admit my ignorance and that I was wrong in a prior comment I posted. I couldn’t get my head around what was being taught here. Now that I have taken lessons from a true LPGA senior touring pro, I now understand what this video is teaching and it is 100% correct! My apologies and a great explanation and demonstration.
If you want to allow for more hinge at the top, you can take your thumb off, itll give the feel of a more hinge set wrist. When people have a poor hinge, this is the first step. I also like to grab the club head with my off hand (when I do just the top half of this drill) so I can use tha thand to force the lead hand to not cup. You are the most knowledgeable instruction on youtube. Every action you mention is based on logic and functional movement.
Berdie, I have been using your split hand drill for a week on the range. My ball strike through ball with all my clubs has dramatically improved. Currently increased ball on target with 10 consecutive iron swings from 3 -8. All irons. My pitching and wedges drastically improved to 10 out of 10 swings. From 4 out of 10. Driver increased from 3- to 8 on target. Thank you. I plan to use this drill as part of of my pre shot on the tee.
Today ‘s the day of this drill, since Kawamura28 post it a day ago! It’s the second golf channel i see recommend it today. Kawamura28 has been teaching this . At last!
As a teaching pro, that focuses (and gives you credit whenever I go into detail on one of my videos), I have to tell you that when I found your first 'if you play golf you need' video, it changed how I taught golf. I made a recent video that talks about Phil Mickelson making comments that directly support this exacty philosophy. In the video I explain how having the hands forward does a few things, that Phil didn't mention, but helps to explain the physics and mechanics of the human body during the golf swing. In my opinion, forward press and a shortened back swing is the key to mid handicap golf. Until someone reaches a single digit handicap the more complicated techniques are wasted. One thing people dont mention enough is the newest 'tilt and cover' lingo that is going around. Without your hands forward, there is literally no way to hit a ball from the middle to front of the stance, without thinning or scooping. Another is the 'miss' scenario. If you can have your hands in front of the ball at all times, and you have a moderately consistent path, you can force your miss to be left or right every time as the club head remains in control. I play a cut both in my rounds, and in Long Drive Competition. I allows me to know exactly where my club face is and gives me a starting point to every day. Thanks so much for what you do. You motivated me to start my channel, and if you ever get to the states / South Florida please look me up. I would love to just talk golf with someone I consider transformative in this space.
Expecting my DST Compressor on Wednesday. I spent an hour chipping and hitting irons today swinging split grip 20 times between shots. First time I got benefit and understanding from the drill. No flip and a lot of very well struck shots.
One thing I've learned using the DST is proper grip pressure. I've noticed if it's a little soft or loose I have a harder time keeping the face square thru impact.
I have had your clubs for several years. Whenever I practice with them I am always more comfortable with the straight shafted wedge rather than the bowed 8 iron. When practicing with the 8i I always feel as though my hands are too far forward in order to get the lines matched where they should. I noticed you are using the straight shaft in this video, wondered whether this drill will work with either club.
Hello Hakirk1, Yes you can do the split hand grip drill with either a straight club or the compressor. Remember you're not hitting a ball in this drill, it's just supposed to help you engage and synchronise your body rotation with your arm structure and movement. With regards to the handle position at impact that both the Compressor and CR-10 promote, the challenge is to reach a lag impact position and that is much more extreme than people imagine. You’ve clearly heard the expression, “The difference between feel and real” well reaching a lag impact is the ultimate example of this. When golfers are asked to demonstrate a lag impact position they tend to get nowhere close to it, and when they reach a simulated lag impact using the Impact Line they can’t believe how exaggerated it feels. I hope this helps.
Split hand drill is used for many reasons. I'm a low single, and I still use it to feel more open at impact. He does say he's targetting this drill to casters. It's the opposite of what a caster does. If you are a caster, this drill will not make you drag the handle. It will make you cast less. And you're not going to start presenting the hosel, as you suggest.
absolutely no release of the club. If you are going to recommend a drill, you should recommend one that shows the proper release. If you swing a club like he is recommending, your ball isn't going very far.
He said 96% release before impact.... That drill is to help get the 4% feeling. "The proper release" can be held off (speith) or rolled (scott)... It's irrelevant... They all have their hands ahead of the ball at impact. I think that's what his clubs help train....

Berdie, I've been using the DST and split hand drill. Shot 73! This is the best trainer.

I have gone from 20hcap to 11 hcap since watching your videos and focusing on your principles. Amazing. Thank you
Just an EXCELLENT description of how this drill helps- from the backswing to body 'hip turn through the ball to finish.
Glad it helped.

Can`t wait to give this a try
Worked for me mclroys favourite drill
So good!!!!
Great video. what about the release? Thank you
Excellent
Great drill tips
Thanks 👍
I need more instruction hitting a low fade when the dst 8i.
can you shape shots with this club also? or is it designed to hit the ball straight?
Split hand drill is used to square the face. In this video you drag the handle and you can see the hosel of the club is way ahead of the toe.
