I literally saw a comment recently on a vid where the person said "I'm homophobic but this couple is so cute." It reminded me of the bluntness of the 50s character. I mean at least when people are honest with their bias you know exactly who to avoid lol.

I guess. But then again you can choose not to hook up with people. Maybe some people are just more hypersexual and don't feel the need to have a relationship at the current moment. And maybe some people want to have a fulfilling relationship with someone and share a connection with them. It really depends on what you want in the end

ngl I find hookup culture to be quite damaging to a lot of people. I'm college age and I've been in a few relationships, but I've found quite a few of my friends really struggle with validating themselves through hookups
To have the choice to do what you want and not to be judged for it is incredibly important imo, so I'd never say we should villainise hooking up or anything like that; the main issue is that many people seem to fall into it as a coping mechanism, and for them it can be really destructive
That said, some people just get a lot and feel great and that's Aok

Both parties eventually feel empty afterwards and it’s creating a culture where “the grass is always greener” because of all the dating apps, so nobody wants to commit because there’s so many available options. I’ve been celibate for 2 years because of it. People also automatically assume you’re down to hookup now too and I have to make it explicitly clear I’m not interested in that. People are also much more prone to enter ‘situationships’ now because they can get the good without having to commit and it blurs the lines between partners

I've found I even have to be the one to initiate things all the time or else I go extended periods of time without any friend prospects. And whenever something comes up, I typically forget the lessons I learned from previous experiences because that's what happens when you go months/years without reinforcing a lesson. You repeat the mistake.
Just saying. If one day you decide you want to experience something different, it's on you to make it happen. The waiting game is a lie.

Hookup culture sucks, well it's just not for me. I have only ever slept with one guy but every other guy I meet will eventually or immediately want to talk about sexual things with you. I'm just not interested without forming an emotional bond/connection which I crave from most people.
Also I haven't fully experienced the cutesy, lovey dovey, and wholesome type of relationship. There is absolutely no romance. I really want someone to lean on, hold hands with, peck, and do things that make me FEEL good. I want to feel inspired to make food for someone I deeply care about.
My whole family and friends ask me why I haven't been dating anyone, well, because I just have shit luck. I am not even picky about appearance at all! I like them all sizes, wide or short. I just want a guy who will work his way into my heart, I am not just going to hand my heart to some dude to play with.
The most wholesome guy I ever met was twice my age and he didn't have any relationship experience either, I thought he was perfect. Too bad he was hella older than me. I just want a sweet guy who wont expect sex from me too soon, who tolerates my affectionate side, will eat the food I make, and actually enjoys my company.

    • @YSFmemories

you just wrote out the problem in plain sight yourself. Guys who are wholesome and don't look at women as trophies they get to dominate and take end up being rejected. But that's the kind of personality girls fall for.

It feels close to home. I also think that asking for a relationship with an emotional connection isn’t too much to expect. And I’ve had the same experience as you. When I tried to talk to guys, they start very quickly to show sexual intentions with me, and in all fairness it grosses me out. I know that not all guys are like that but imagine getting 90% of your interactions being guys wanting you as their sex object.
I think if you’re looking for a genuine guy who will respect you and be romantic with you, you should wait for him :). He’s probably out there waiting for you to be the best version of yourself. Stay strong with your values and don’t settle for less. You deserve to be with a guy who’s genuine! Analysis from an older person:
For men, hookup culture creates a division in a small group that gets all the sex they desire and a large group that is invisible to women.
For women, hookup culture makes it really hard to find a romantic partner because the men she has sex with have no intention in forming a relationship. Furthermore the best man she hooked up with will become the entry bar to judge a potential partner, resulting in unrealistic expectations making it even harder to find a boyfriend.
Hookup culture only benefits a small group of men and an even smaller group of promiscuous women who don't want a relation. It complicates things for the rest.

I think hookup culture as you said comes with pros and cons. I think it's really dependent on the person, and how secure they are tbh (also… If they have an influence of any kind). Hookup culture does tend to overlap with people who use it as a way to validate themselves and shame others who aren't as sexually active. And it’s not always obvious either, it can be statements that really wear you down over time. It does and can force people to feel that they need to participate in that culture to feel accepted and valid amongst their peers. You have to be a certain kind of person to be okay with consistent hookups, and if you’re not- then you’re not and that’s okay. You don’t really hear that enough imo.
There’s also that weird pressure as a woman where you’re either seen as prudish, or not empowering for not being “sexual” or “kinky” enough; on the flip side you’re seen as “easy”, and all sorts of derogatory terms if you indulge in sexual activities. No winning at all.
Not entirely tied to hookup culture, but I think this all bleeds together. To add onto that bit of empowerment, there’s also this weird dissonance where if you’re not having so-called kinky sex, then you’re not empowered or feminist enough which feels deeply unfeminist in itself lol, but I think that ties into hookup culture because seeing that messaging spread out (far enough for someone really young to see it) is lowkey kind of insidious and grooms a lot of women to feel they need to indulge in bdsm activities both in relationships and casual hookups. AND! For way too many men to think that they can choke women without consent (due in part to this messaging). It’s legitimately dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing, and a little more dangerous when you’re engaging with a stranger. You can seriously hurt somebody!
I think our perception of sex and female sexuality has largely been skewed due to the male gaze. I think a lot of proclamations of being kinky/very into hookup culture are geared towards men in a palatable way :/ instead of sex positivity and enjoying sex in whatever way you want. It always feels pointed towards someone instead of just enjoying sex as it is.
It’s way worse when I see creators casually talk about hookups and bdsm-adjacent things (and often play it as what makes them cool) without ever advocating for safety, consent, comfort zones, and testing. Especially since a lot of younger viewers tune in, and don’t feel comfortable listening to these topics from their teachers, parents etc. I think people should be more cognizant of their words, and that they’re not invalidating people for doing what they want with their bodies. I hope that came across clearly lmao. It’s a complicated topic that could take me hours to write LMAO
    Againnnn, love your videos! :)

To add on your point of bdsm-like practices, it's making me think of ths youtuber Kat Blaque and how she uses the term Vanillas (non bdsm practictioners) in an almost condescending way. Almost how "virgins" is sometimes used in a derogatory way

I definitely agree with you. Hookup culture gave me a lot of fun stories and freedom to explore what I want, but it also made me so, so afraid to feel emotionally attached to people, eventually breaking my heart (because I did usually end up falling for someone who wasn't as committed in the end).
I'm glad I was able to kind of let go of the "I'm not looking for anything serious" mindset, because I was probably restraining myself emotionally more than I initially thought. Being able to let yourself feel those feelings is so much better than constantly worrying about committing to someone (in any way).

But also, you are loved, are valid, and deserve good things because you have a purpose in the world! It really is true, and please stay hydrated, have a bite to eat, maybe stretch to get your blood flowing? Because you are enough. ✿

I totally feel you! This video makes me feel understood. I often go looking for an emotional connection, but end up only getting physical intimacy. It's weird how you are comfortable being naked in front of someone but not dare to text them good night. I'm so tired of the push and pull game in modern dating where you will be seen as needy if you want something stable and serious. I'm taking a break from dating due to the pandemic and some bad experiences in the past. But like you said, liking someone feels good! The butterflies feeling is the best even though you risk getting hurt. I'm talking in circles but I do hope that I can still hopeful about the real kind of love exists in the midst of chaotic hookups.

This was too funny and real. Just taken a big break from relationship stuff and was super happy doing my own thing but I just started talking to someone, and I honestly forgot how nice it is to be messaging someone back and forth and realising you've had a big goofy smile on your face the whole time. You can forgot those amazing little parts of forming a connection with someone after going through a bad relationship and it feels amazing to rediscover them. Thanks for shining a spotlight on this subject :)

I believe it is all personal preference and whatever you need for your current self. If you know that all you want is to try this or that then go for it, but if it is to find a connection then this is not the route to go. Finding a connection through hookup is the same as using porn, at the moment you will feel nice, but right after when the cuddle chemicals kick in you feel even more empty inside.
Personally, I believe the best way to attract long term relationships is to be comfortable with yourself being alone. It is very attractive to see someone passionate and independent. ofc I'm not the best to give advice as my current and only serious relationship. We met on ff14 online as we were in the same guild and they played a female avatar so for a long time I thought they might be a girl. Even then I thought I would become lesbian for them.

Right, this video completely matched my thoughts on this topic. I love body positivity and stuff and I don't see hookups as a bad thing, but I feel like a lot of norms have changed socially in this age. It's odd to find someone. Then again, maybe now we're more selective in who we date and stuff. Since last century things like divorce were such a taboo, I feel like it was more likely to end up with a mismatch and just be satisfied. Because we're so mobile regarding dating this day and age we're allowed to be more selective which I think is great because it gives you better odds of finding someone that really fits you. Lovely video greets from the Netherlands xox.
