Theres one stereotype that's if you're a sad and depressed artist, your art is beautiful but in reality you just end up with crap.

Yeah, I like drawing bloody images and kinda gory stuff orr sometimes stuff that are more "sexy" and a lot of times I feel ashamed because of what people are saying to me...... It's just how I express myself....
I have never done drugs in my life and yet I've had people describe some of my work as "trippy" or "fever-dream" or ask if it was inspired by an acid trip. And it's like, nope! My mind is just Like That.
I sometimes suspect that it has to do with inhibition. I think a lot of creative people can just choose to switch on and off their creative inhibition -- the "this makes no sense" instinct. I always have it "switched off" when I am first drafting (I'm more of a writer than a visual artist), and then I switch it on during revision. I think the people who assume that drugs are involved may struggle more with switching off that inhibition on command.

Eliza hamilton, I feel you even though I am in 5th grade ab to go to sixth. Also a lot of people think I'm drawing porn just because I haven't finished the actual piece. Eventually at some point in your life if you go art school or just love to do art in general you will have to learn how to draw anatomy by watching. Well naked people. It's a normal thing not that I do that but some people do have to do that, so if you are going to walk up to me drawing people don't think I'm drawing porn. It's annoying and go away if you re going to say that to me lol

Well the second one is understandable but there are some limits, art is not only about anime (even thought I do mostly that) so yeah I get why this situation can annoy you.
I had one friend who is sometimes a rude person to me and my other friends telling us (me and my group of friend who are boys) that "anime isn't real and the girls in it too", I mean yeah we like anime, but we know it's not real like wtf was she trying to tell us?
Did she really thought she was making us learn something ?
And days after that stupid comment about anime (knowing that I draw only in that style) she asked me at lunch in front of all our friends to draw her in anime style (I don't want to be rude to her but I don't like her look btw and I don't want to do it for free) I flat out said "no" and she got akward for the rest of lunch.

@@fakecubed People put themselves down because they haven't had the amount of progress as others have. That's unfair, because with the same amount of work and effort, you can get similar or even better
Grasboompje you’re taking it too literally, and if they really were going to get good at art they would be self-motivating already enough to do that work. Not everyone cares enough to become an artist themselves, but they do appreciate the work of others, and want to acknowledge that hard work by compliments of this nature.
One common misconception is that as soon as someone hears that you draw, they assume you can draw anything. Like I draw mainly people but dont know JACK SHIT about patterns. Its like asking an abstract artist to draw a hyper realistic piece of artwork its just not their thing

Another stereotype is like whenever you tell someone that you draw, they automatically assume that you are some sort of art goddess that can just draw EVERYTHING PERFECTLY, when in reality every artist is at different stages of their learning process, and usually an artist also have like one or two focus areas and can't draw EVERYTHING. Like for example some artists have trained drawing humans or animals a lot, but they may be really bad at drawing stuff like buildings, cars or nature. And when you then draw something like that, and it doesn't turn out very good they are all like "but I thought you said you could draw?!"
Uni Corn omg right! I draw people and animals, absolutely suck at buildings and plants and stuff. Someone told me to draw a house, I kept saying no gut eventually caved, they get mad at my not being able to even though I TOLD them, I can't draw houses.

One thing that annoys me, is when someone asks "who's that?" And I have to tell them that its just a random girl or something. "No but like what's her name?" They would say. This has only happened like once, but it was annoying lol

one day i was drawing a girl in class because we had free time. Everyone was drawing what they wanted. Anyway, I did her hair and face first, and these girls looked over and went "EWWW she's naked!" And at first I was understanding, "oh, im not done, here.." So I added a sweater and boots. I decided to have her wear jeggings, which from her position, wouldnt have many folds. So i finish this sketch, no coloring or outline, and show them. AND THESE FREAKING GIRLS WENT "she still looks naked.." Pointing to her pants. I colored in her pants with the pencil, showing it AGAIN.
"She still looks-" i just stood, looking over at their drawing "YOUR STICK FIGURE IS NAKED" and walked over to my friends.

I think I know why some people think artists are poor. Because art supplies is so friggin expensive. Like you walk into the store one day, buy a single marker and the cashier's like: "That'll be a hundred thousand dollars, please."

One time I was drawing some of my characters naked so I could get a good grasp of their anatomy and be able to draw them easier (I was planning to use them for a comic, though I ended up scrapping it anyway). My mom saw my sketchbook and asked me why I was drawing porn. The drawings were not sexual in any way... They were just anatomy practice... And I even said that but she still though I was drawing porn...

You found it." It took took the whole class to convince her that I drew it. I just wanted to share this story lol

If you're ever asked to do something you don't particularly want to do, quote a price to make them go away. It should be high enough that if anyone ever does want to pay it, it might actually be worth it to you, and if they're really willing to pay it then your high price is actually a reasonable price and that says something about your value. It's win-win. If you find you're getting more requests from people actually willing to pay your high quote than you can (or want to) handle, raise that quote until you get a number of clients that you are okay with. I know people who have launched very successful side-gigs doing this method, and they were shocked at just what their value really was to other people.
Just be sure to get paid up front.

A lot of these stereotypes are what make me not want to tell people that I consider drawing a hobby, especially since they think I basically make quick, easymoney by doing comissions, since I am relatively good at drawing, they assume that I always find it fun and easy. I find it really frustrating, seeing as it can be just as hard as any other job

Another thing is like, when people hear the word “artist” they just think of realism. Like, they think the only types of true artists are realism artists, when it takes many, many years to get to that style. Most artists don’t even want to draw realism. There’s semi-realism, cubism, abstract, comical, so on, so forth.

They even tell me that I need to expand my wardrobe. The thing is, if I wasn’t so lazy and focused on my art and school, then I would wear more interesting clothes. But I am lazy, not just to put interesting clothes on, like dresses and skirts for example, but wearing them through the day. Also, my “uniform” makes me blend in so much that people leave me alone: introvert tip there 😎)

I once was drawing something gruesome on one lesson (Religion lesson, because buck that) and one girls saw this and screamed "OH MY GOD, SHE'S DRAWING HELLISH THINGS!! there are a lot of ways art is involved with things that “help society” too, art is part of so many different things! you can have jobs like police sketch artist, art therapist, courtroom sketch artist, etc! it’s very cool to see the wide variety of art jobs that most people don’t know about :)
When I went to therapy (before Corona) I would draw stuff there and I made stuff for my dog, it was cool. One thing that seriously bothers me (is not a stereotype though) is when people constantly ask to see my art, but keep asking after I say no once. It's not inappropriate, it's just very personal to me, I don't share that stuff with people. If you keep asking, my response will continue to get harsher. Also, DON'T LOOK THROUGH SOMEONES SKETCHBOOK WITHOUT PERMISSION. You have no idea how many times someone has snatched my sketchbook and flipped through it without me knowing, and then returning it to me a few minutes later saying "oh wow you're really good!" like I can't even accept your compliment. No joke, I legit drew a 'Get Well' Card for my grandma while she was in the hospital and EVERYONE praised it. The art was only a quick sketch (I did it in only 5 minutes as my mom was rushing out the door to go see grandma that day), and even then it was based on some anime chibi nurse I found on the internet so it wasn't even original. I wasn't proud of it, but turns out that someone liked it so much that they STOLE it. I think it was one of the nurses who did it, she was even asking my grandma if I could draw for their son (who I guess was also in the hospital at the time) and I said 'no'. It was the craziest thing that's ever happened to me, but now I truly believe that people in my area have little to no talent with art (except for a few people I knew in highschool seriously one girl drew Invader Zim styled stuff that looked legit like it could've actually been in the cartoon itself). I just don't get how an adult would steal such a thing..I mean, I did say 'no' but that's still not a very good reason. I made that card for my grandma, not for you or your son.
So i guess the stereotype I hate most is 'hey can you draw me and/or do art for this person for FREE?'. And then, even when the artist says 'NO' (whether it be their actual job or just not doing every free request they get), the person goes into a psychotic rage and says some crap about how the artist is a 'scammer' or something. It's even worse in real life, because someone can just come along and steal/ruin anything you've made (though it's also just as bad online). Seriously, art is a LUXURY. You don't need to physically consume it to survive, it's only a decoration and something pretty to look at. But some people...it just boggels me what they'll do for free art.
When people think that artists wake up at 9 am and go to sleep at 8pm or something around that time, and then we draw a little but otherwise just relax... No, we draw at least like 8 hours every day and go to sleep super late
I sometimes have what I call "art rushes" , in these moments I can draw kinda good, when this is over I can't draw at all ...

A stereo type that I see a lot that really annoys me and also doesn't make sense is, "Every artist is depressed and they draw to cheer themselves up." Well, some artists may be like this, but I mean SOME people may wear blue and be sad and wear yellow and be happy, vise versa, doesn't make sense? Exactly. I think we just really need to get out there that artists create art because that is what they choose to do, not because they're ALWAYS venting or ALWAYS depressed and cheering themselves up. I think this is a really messed up assumption and that also might be why some parents are scared for their children going to art school or getting really into art.
My favorite color is blue and I love drawing but I'm definitely not depressed
As an artist who has depression that makes me mad because depression makes it a LOT HARDER for me to draw not a lot easier. I wish I could motivate myself to draw more.
They've told me that before, and i am kinda depressed because of personal matters but i dont vent all the time, and i dont wear dark colors, i try to wear yellows, reds, and vibrant colors.

I’m an artist and when I was in 3rd grade I had this really artsy sequined backpack and people used to not believe it was mine because I looked so normal
I mean I'm an artist myself and I love doing cool stuff with my hair, nails, and body, I have dozens of tattoos, black and purple hair with bangs, a nose and lip piercing, and acrylic nails, but not because I'm an eccentric artist, it's because I like to experiment to find what styles suit me best :)
Yeah there's also the "All artists have mental illness" stereotype and "They get their creativity from it" which is honestly pretty problematic as my experience being in a healthy state of mind get creativity flowing and shit done. Then there's also the "all artists are gay" which ... yeah I personally can't argue against because I am a gay artist but I am constantly surrounded by straight artists.

A stereotype that I see often from ignorant students in my school is that all artists have to master hyper realism and that they only draw still life or portraits of themselves. Like yeah, we have to practice realism, but after we learn it we bend it to make it fun, and it's still art.
I don't think it's ignorant, i think it's the fact that the teachers try to mostly push onto their students to do realism so it can help them in the longrun but the students can convert it into "always be like 4chan's /IC Board"( or however the hell you call it )

LazerE lol Tell them you are already working on at least like 10 commissions and you’re booked. Notice you said commissions. This will tell the person that they have to pay for a drawing and they probably wont want to. If they dont know what commissions are remember to ask them if they do. If they dont tell them and make sure to exaggerate that part about it costing money! ;)

I generally don't like art classes.. They say working with other people inspires you to work harder, but it's the opposite for me.. I know I know, I need to get over it, but seeing better artists then me just brings me down.. I know, there will always be people who are better artists then me. But I perder to work alone, I enjoy art, but working with people in art discourages me. (One last irrelevant thing) since I don't have much confidence in my art abilities. I am IN FURY when people snatch my sketchbook. It's my personal property. Thats like seeing somebody on their phone, snatching it from a COMPLETE STRANGER to see what they're doing.. 😡😠
