Theres one stereotype that's if you're a sad and depressed artist, your art is beautiful but in reality you just end up with crap.

fiabeans Now that you mention this, back when I was going through depression my art was so terrible, yet now that I'm doing better (emotionally, though I don't know how long that'll last) I do better at art.

Eh to be honest my art ideas and execution got way better once I went through an emotional crisis, it gave me the inspiration to start again on it as a way to express that anguish. But obviously I'm not going to stop now even if I feel better, just saying it inspired me

I have never done drugs in my life and yet I've had people describe some of my work as "trippy" or "fever-dream" or ask if it was inspired by an acid trip. And it's like, nope! My mind is just Like That.
I sometimes suspect that it has to do with inhibition. I think a lot of creative people can just choose to switch on and off their creative inhibition -- the "this makes no sense" instinct. I always have it "switched off" when I am first drafting (I'm more of a writer than a visual artist), and then I switch it on during revision. I think the people who assume that drugs are involved may struggle more with switching off that inhibition on command.

Eliza hamilton, I feel you even though I am in 5th grade ab to go to sixth. Also a lot of people think I'm drawing porn just because I haven't finished the actual piece. Eventually at some point in your life if you go art school or just love to do art in general you will have to learn how to draw anatomy by watching. Well naked people. It's a normal thing not that I do that but some people do have to do that, so if you are going to walk up to me drawing people don't think I'm drawing porn. It's annoying and go away if you re going to say that to me lol

    • @elizahamilton6265
      @elizahamilton6265 3 года назад +65

@@idontactlikethisanymoreyal6577 yea it's pretty annoying even though I don't draw people I draw animals instead but when I put down the basic guidelines they're like "Why are u just drawing shapes?" and it's the same goD DAMNED PEOPLE EVERY TIME LIKE bruh please just LEARN
and especially in my AFJROTC class (I plan to join the military after high school) I get made fun of so much for drawing like a couple of guys called me a furry and I was like "Ok..? and am I supposed to be offended? So what if I am one? Just cause I specialize in animals doesn't mean I'm a furry"
doesn't help that i have general anxiety disorder so these confrontations that I get make me incredibly nervous and they're just standing there like "y u sweating so much u good?"
but yea. There's gonna be nice people and mean people. Ever since quarantine started, I've been experimenting with a whole bunch of new mediums, my favorites being acrylic and oil paints
I even made a painting for my crush and gave it to him on his birthday

    • @mathieuw3899
      @mathieuw3899 3 года назад +29

Well the second one is understandable but there are some limits, art is not only about anime (even thought I do mostly that) so yeah I get why this situation can annoy you.
I had one friend who is sometimes a rude person to me and my other friends telling us (me and my group of friend who are boys) that "anime isn't real and the girls in it too", I mean yeah we like anime, but we know it's not real like wtf was she trying to tell us?
Did she really thought she was making us learn something ?
And days after that stupid comment about anime (knowing that I draw only in that style) she asked me at lunch in front of all our friends to draw her in anime style (I don't want to be rude to her but I don't like her look btw and I don't want to do it for free) I flat out said "no" and she got akward for the rest of lunch.
*it happened during my first year of college*
And if she is going to make stupid comments "reminding us" that anime girls aren't real then she shouldn't ask me to draw her in anime style with such enjoyement without me judging a little bit her IQ because she annoyed us good times with her BS.

Another stereotype is like whenever you tell someone that you draw, they automatically assume that you are some sort of art goddess that can just draw EVERYTHING PERFECTLY, when in reality every artist is at different stages of their learning process, and usually an artist also have like one or two focus areas and can't draw EVERYTHING. Like for example some artists have trained drawing humans or animals a lot, but they may be really bad at drawing stuff like buildings, cars or nature. IM NOT THE ONLY ONE
one day i was drawing a girl in class because we had free time. Everyone was drawing what they wanted. Anyway, I did her hair and face first, and these girls looked over and went "EWWW she's naked!" And at first I was understanding, "oh, im not done, here.." So I added a sweater and boots. I decided to have her wear jeggings, which from her position, wouldnt have many folds. So i finish this sketch, no coloring or outline, and show them. AND THESE FREAKING GIRLS WENT "she still looks naked.." Pointing to her pants. I colored in her pants with the pencil, showing it AGAIN.
"She still looks-" i just stood, looking over at their drawing "YOUR STICK FIGURE IS NAKED" and walked over to my friends.
      SORRY
i had to get that out because i hate it when people do that to SUCH an extent. -_-

If you're ever asked to do something you don't particularly want to do, quote a price to make them go away. It should be high enough that if anyone ever does want to pay it, it might actually be worth it to you, and if they're really willing to pay it then your high price is actually a reasonable price and that says something about your value. It's win-win. If you find you're getting more requests from people actually willing to pay your high quote than you can (or want to) handle, raise that quote until you get a number of clients that you are okay with. I know people who have launched very successful side-gigs doing this method, and they were shocked at just what their value really was to other people.

Me: *A music nerd/drawer/writer/introvert that wears the same grey sweatshirt all the time, a t-shirt, black leggings, and black fuzzy boots.* “Yeah, totally” (Fun Fact: my family jokes that this is my “uniform” since it’s what I wear almost year-round until summer. They even tell me that I need to expand my wardrobe. The thing is, if I wasn’t so lazy and focused on my art and school, then I would wear more interesting clothes. But I am lazy, not just to put interesting clothes on, like dresses and skirts for example, but wearing them through the day. YOU'RE GONNA BURN IN HELL FOR THIS!!!" and I look at her and go "Welp, I'll be happy to go to hell for that and meet other artists who drew things like that. I can't wait to meet Michel Angelo" and she just looked at me with a weird stare, not knowing what I meant.
I am an introvert and all my artist friends are also introverts. But I wouldn't be surprised if there was in extroverted artist.
Yeah, I got that once. Once, I was drawing a rather curvy girl, and one guy came up, when I wasn't even done and started going "Where are her eyes? Where are her hands? Where are her clothes? Are you drawing some messed up kinky porn?". By them I wanted to rip my drawing to shreds.
Well... I kinda do that... But it's probably because I don't expect people to pay much for my art ^^' And maybe because I'm also too kind... ._.

no dude society eats, sleeps n breathes actual artwork.
everyone is addicted to tv, the internet, phones, the world arnd them, u know how much of that artists r responsible for? nobody would have cartoons, tv shows would be fucking awful, product design would be white labels with black times new roman letters n thats it
artists designed every car, sets in movies, clothes, cartoons, album artwork for music, prolly every website u use, all the art everyone looks at, even if they dont know it
lots of architecture is designed by artists, i mean artists also literally design products n parts for stuff. not just artists but it runs deep thru fucking everything. tons of things in movies, i mean ppl design all those monsters, its all art. concept artists etc. everything in video games even the ui. artists r literally one of the most necessary jobs n there r *tons* of different types
n yeah im talking abt visual 2d artists. if u wanna widen the definition of artists, to like, music, acting, all housing n innovation
oh yeah n i didnt even get into the ideas that come FROM art thatve brought society *tons* of things. i mean art is responsible for so much culture, expression, forward thought, social change, yeah 2d visual art. like, drawing. painting. etc.
n thats not even counting the fact that tons of ppl just love looking at it, n tons of ppl feel less alone, etc. etc. etc seriously its right up there with doctors.
life would be shit without it. its literally paramount to almost everything that even exists to us, at some point or another. half the things that give any given person any amt of joy, involve a huge amt of art.
n society should want them to be paid better, incentivized more, have an easier time getting careers, etc. cuz u want the ppl in those places to do as good of a job as possible. u dont want it to be difficult for an unknown super skilled artist to design a creature for ur new favorite movie.
some of the most legendary movies have literally been built arnd a monster design from an artist. who do u think did all the creatures for star wars? the arts in general r insanely paramount to every single person to such an extreme extent, n nobody even rly realizes how true that is.

There is a reason why most historical painters are men. Same with musicians. We are very fortunate that we are beginning to live in a society where a person's sex has less weight in their choice of profession.

One thing that seriously bothers me (is not a stereotype though) is when people constantly ask to see my art, but keep asking after I say no once. It's not inappropriate, it's just very personal to me, I don't share that stuff with people. If you keep asking, my response will continue to get harsher. Also, DON'T LOOK THROUGH SOMEONES SKETCHBOOK WITHOUT PERMISSION. You have no idea how many times someone has snatched my sketchbook and flipped through it without me knowing, and then returning it to me a few minutes later saying "oh wow you're really good!" like I can't even accept your compliment. No joke, I legit drew a 'Get Well' Card for my grandma while she was in the hospital and EVERYONE praised it. The art was only a quick sketch (I did it in only 5 minutes as my mom was rushing out the door to go see grandma that day), and even then it was based on some anime chibi nurse I found on the internet so it wasn't even original. I wasn't proud of it, but turns out that someone liked it so much that they STOLE it. I think it was one of the nurses who did it, she was even asking my grandma if I could draw for their son (who I guess was also in the hospital at the time) and I said 'no'. It was the craziest thing that's ever happened to me, but now I truly believe that people in my area have little to no talent with art (except for a few people I knew in highschool seriously one girl drew Invader Zim styled stuff that looked legit like it could've actually been in the cartoon itself). I just don't get how an adult would steal such a thing..I mean, I did say 'no' but that's still not a very good reason. I made that card for my grandma, not for you or your son.
So i guess the stereotype I hate most is 'hey can you draw me and/or do art for this person for FREE?'. And then, even when the artist says 'NO' (whether it be their actual job or just not doing every free request they get), the person goes into a psychotic rage and says some crap about how the artist is a 'scammer' or something. It's even worse in real life, because someone can just come along and steal/ruin anything you've made (though it's also just as bad online). Seriously, art is a LUXURY. You don't need to physically consume it to survive, it's only a decoration and something pretty to look at. But some people...it just boggels me what they'll do for free art.

A stereo type that I see a lot that really annoys me and also doesn't make sense is, "Every artist is depressed and they draw to cheer themselves up." Well, some artists may be like this, but I mean SOME people may wear blue and be sad and wear yellow and be happy, vise versa, doesn't make sense? Exactly. I think we just really need to get out there that artists create art because that is what they choose to do, not because they're ALWAYS venting or ALWAYS depressed and cheering themselves up. I think this is a really messed up assumption and that also might be why some parents are scared for their children going to art school or getting really into art.

my dad asked me yesterday "not to be rude but dont you want to do an actual career and have art as a passion?"
and i replied with "I would rather do something i love and that im passionet (idk how to spell either XD) about than doing a job which i dread to do every morning"
My brother also told me "Im going to be an engineer, I help society and what you do is just draw how is that going to help anyone? imagine being stranded on an island what are you gonna do? draw? oh wow so helpful, do it as a passion not as a career!"
my mom is the only one supporting me with my decision to be an artist because she kinda was one two and she is the most amazing mom in the world

There are over 7 Billion people in the world and your brother is saying that? Does he know that there are over 50,000 engineers already? Maybe even over a million
You can help with art by selling it and donate to a homeless shelter, and you can retrace your steps in that stranded island to make a map and sketch the island to tell future people that it looked like that a long time ago.
Artist don’t only draw anime neko girls all day.
Show your brother this reply so that he’ll understand.

I generally don't like art classes.. They say working with other people inspires you to work harder, but it's the opposite for me.. I know I know, I need to get over it, but seeing better artists then me just brings me down.. I know, there will always be people who are better artists then me. But I perder to work alone, I enjoy art, but working with people in art discourages me. (One last irrelevant thing) since I don't have much confidence in my art abilities. I am IN FURY when people snatch my sketchbook. It's my personal property. Thats like seeing somebody on their phone, snatching it from a COMPLETE STRANGER to see what they're doing.. 😡😠
