I've got used to the glazed eye look of family and friends every time I mention my latest race. Part of the delight of Parkrun is being able to run a steady 5k and have a chat with a complete stranger about running!

Plenty of people with the same likes out there, but a stranger is just someone you haven't met yet.

I accidentally fell in love with running after wanting to do a half for a bucket list and during training i realized i actually really liked it. Now i'm running a full marathon this year and a 20 miler in April! I never even thought my body was capable of doing these kinds of things a year ago and now i feel like running has changed my life

      @nicksmith4507 18 дней назад +2

Excellent! There is really no reason to be terrified, as long as you do some reasonable prep. It's a cliche but take it easy for the first half at least. If it's your first, any time will be a PB! I wish I had known about fueling: on my first (MiltonK) I got terrible cramp but have been using salt tablets since and never had it again. You will be amazed how fun it is 😀

As a long distance runner who did his first 800m last season, I think you'll find it a breeze! How anyone runs such short distance I have no idea - 800 felt insane, and much scarier than my last marathon. Just start running and don't stop 👍

    I finished the 29km today!
Pray for me on my next, 32km ❤

Happy places are songs strategically positioned on a playlist. I finished my 1st sub 2hr ½ marathon to Oasis' Don't look back in anger, and it has become a key song on my list as a constant reminder of how good running can make you feel. Also running as a pacer runner in mass start events gives a huge sense of satisfaction when you cross that line dragging someone to a PB only to be greeted by people you spent the majority of the event with helping them to their own goals..... no feeling better as a pacer than getting told of by a finish funnel manager because you've stopped for hugs, and thanks from the group you paced. Everyone should try pacing once, even if at a parkrun it will provide a whole different outlook to your runs 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃🏃‍♂️🚩🚩🚩

Running my first marathon in April. The longest I have run is 3 half marathons and I have never run longer than that in training. So my first ever 14, 16, 18, and 20 mile runs will be my longest runs ever. It's a little bit daunting, but luckily I am running all my long runs with my local run club to make it easier.

I ran my first marathon last October. I ran/walked the distance and only just made the cut off of 7 hours. I did train, but the last couple of months before the race, I had injuries, so didn't get to the longest runs I would have liked. Whilst the first half was ok, the second half was torturous, so I would definitely;y agree that it is hard to enjoy the run if you haven't done sufficient training. I've entered for this year, so whilst it wasn't as enjoyable as it could have been - it is still a great thing to do :)

Great episode! I’m running my first marathon in April.
Training has somewhat started - I’m doing a speed block, then a build block off the back of a flu and winter sads related rebuild.
Really resonated with what Andy said about the distances being intimidating. I know I’m okay until a half marathon. But 23km+ is terrifying.
Rick should do Cape Town, I think it’s meant for him. If Andy can do one, he can do another one!

Manchester marathon will be my first one. I’m aiming for under 2hrs 50. I covered the distance at an easy pace (for me) back in October in 3hrs 36, with my 2nd half being faster than my first. Done plenty of training at goal pace and faster since too, so I’m confident I’ll be able to do it.

Such a brilliant episode, my favourite so far! 18:30 I've heard a dietician advise: You need to train your stomach and guts just like all your other muscles. You should start practice one's marathon nutrition AT LEAST 1 year before one's first marathon, starting at low levels. Why? You need to try different foods, gels, chews, brands, coffeine or not and how much one can stomach maximum *at race pace* because on some of those long runs things inevitably WILL go wrong and you WILL have to abandon the odd long run. Stuff you just cannot get down, tastes horribly, you find out that your water gets frozen in the bladder tubes in winter (start with warm water, insulate the tubes), or just too much coffeine or sugar getting GI issues from hell... It's not a shame. Starting early gives you puffer time to make up those runs go wrong. Also she said experiment at different temperatures. She's right, once my hands were so cold I suddenly couldn't open the tiny gel sachets. I was so glad that I had Haribo gummy bear, and sweetened condensed milk in a tube as a backup with me.

For my 2025 running goals, I need to work on many things. My pacing is terrible. I ran 3 half marathons last year and pace was awful. Ran 9 miles at 8 mpm and fell apart after that and ended up finishing in 2 hours. Also I desperately need to do more strength training to help my knees. I'm 58 but want to continue running for as long as possible. Good luck to everyone in 2025!

For me its still fundamentals. Returned to running back in 2020, ran 5 marathons now. However I can afford to lose 10-20 kg, and that's probably where my biggest improvement can come from. Seconded by increasing volume, then working on recovery. The little 0.5% improvements after that do add up to a big difference, but I fear i can get locked into that before i need to.

Looking over the next two years getting fit enough to run a marathon - I don't know if I'm over allowing time to start from scratch but I'm aiming to complete a 5km and 10km this year. I've signed up for a local park run for my 5km with a benchmark around April.

For me the important thing with fueling is just practice and play with it, figure out what works for you.
I know that for me I don't need to fuel before or during for up to about an hour of moderate pace.
Up to around 1.5 hours i will have had a decent breakfast or food a couple of hours before but I don't need to carry anything with me.
Anything over 1.5 hours I carry gels or chews and start taking them from 30-40 mins in...
The bigger question for me is water, how do you practice for a marathon without carrying water?
I will wear a hydration vest for runs over 1.5 hours (shorter if it's hot) and that works fine, and up to now my long races have all been trail races so that's kind of expected.
I'm running Stratford marathon in April and am tempted to try to run without a vest (take water from the stops only) bit would really like to practice a similar strategy before hand to give me the confidence on race day that I won't shrivel up and die😂

I do 100% liquid fueling; after plenty of practice, I have few problems fueling an 8hr bike ride. Running, same thing except it's even harder for me to eat on the go. Still, I keep a LaraBar or something on hand if I start to feel actually hungry.

I was looking at that wine bottle and thought that half marathon time looked somewhat close to what I ran in May of 2024. Mine was 1:53:51.. guess I should have pushed harder 😂

Well, I did do the Snowdonia Trail Marathon last year as my first ever marathon. Small disclaimer, my main outdoor hobby is mountaineering, and 30+ km mountain days are not something new, but prior to the Marathon, the longest I had done was the Yorkshire 3 peaks route at 39km

Minor gripe..when it comes to the marathon can you talk in miles please as well as KM as it is still recognised as 26.2miles in some parts .on marathons training..I have ran lots of training runs with buddies who are marathon training...I love running but hate races...so always happy to trot along with friends who have big goals

I'm always confused by the way you runners fuel. I come from a cycling / triathlon background and it sounds like you under fuel immensely. i highly recommend you listen to some of the trainerroad podcasts with Kyle Pfaffenbach. he is a research scientist and fuelling exercise is his thing. following his advice is likely to improve your running

@@runningchannelI keep getting Achilles injuries (probably not helped by fluroquinolone antibiotics last year) and just can’t see me getting to the level required for a full marathon let alone one with ‘hills’. Will have to focus on Cardiff Half as a more realistic target this year and stop trying to run before I can walk…..so to speak .
