Thank you for the shout out for training in the winter! It’s a frozen, snowy wasteland in Colorado, USA, so I will be doing my long run on a treadmill. The shout out was a nice bit of encouragement to get it done today!

I have been doing Crossfit for 5 years now: it improved my running so much: no more running related injuries, more stamina in general. Plus it is just so much fun to learn new things such as Olympic weightlifting or gymnastics. And become stronger an fitter. So from me a thumbs up to sports like Crossfit or Hyrox. Love your channel!!

I get your reservations regards doing a Hyrox event only because like you hadn't heard of them until I was persuaded to sign-up for one.
The story starts with someone at our little social run club who mentioned they'd entered a local Hyrox (non affiliated) event as a pair but their partner dropped out 2 months before. She had specifically chosen as it was days before her 50th birthday hence was extremely disappointed. Well silly me told her that if she had no other options I would step up as her new partner.
Ok, I'm several years older and not a gym goer but had just finished Manchester half in 1:45 so thought how hard could it be? With only 5 weeks to go we managed 2 training sessions so I could at least try some of the activities. Wallballs, utter nightmare, jumping Burpees torture; did 50 of each without the other exercises and the panic set in. After our 2nd session we were hoping just to finish but set a target of not being last.
On the day we loaded with caffeine and sugar, got pumped with crowd and loud music before being joining the final wave. Oh my yes the running is the recovery, the feats of strength activities were brutal.
We were the last to finish so we sprinted nearly the entire last 1km. After we finished are faced showed more joy than pain. Yet we were in for a bigger surprise as it was in waves we'd managed overtake some of the earlier contestants and finished 3rd from last. Holy moly that made the aching muscles feel so much better. Even though I pulled muscles in my neck and shoulder, she damaged her left hamstring.
Not planning on doing another hyrox ever... but she has sign-up for her first marathon. Trust me she on her own for that one.

I am a crossfitter turned marathon runner who currently trains with a Hyrox group once a week. Lemme tell you, I cracked up on my long run yesterday listening to Rick say "whats a wall...ballll?" 😅 I guess I take for granted that these movements aren't actually basic and well known by all.
I am only at the start of my training for Spring marathon but I can already feel that the Hyrox style training has made me stronger. I like that it includes faster paced running and usually the workouts we do are lengthy and get your heart rate jacked. I would definitely recommend runners incorporate those movements in training.
Everyone always tells me I would be great at Hyrox because I can do all the movements well and I'm fast. However, it sounds like the most boring thing I can imagine. I'm sure those people feel that way about marathons but at least you have beautiful scenery and variation of the course. Sounds like once you've done one Hyrox you've done them all. Snooze

I'm aiming to hit the only nearby Hyrox in 2026, didn't really learn about them until I overscheduled myself for 2025. Getting into running from an OCR original interest just means I want a lot of physical challenges with my cardio so I'm hoping to eventually do a little bit of everything. Right now I'm aiming to do my first real half in a couple weeks (did it in the neighborhood during training already) then do some speed work until we get closer to when I can run a full marathon, also have a lot of OCR sprinkled throughout my year.

On the 2 lap marathon. Blackpool marathon while potentially quick is 2 laps plus the quirk that the marathon goes one way on the promenade while the half that starts at the same time goes the opposite direction. The marathon then doubles back and joins the half on the main road. Then it’s weaving through the half marathon runners till you find space. 😂

Hyrox is mostly running and engine. The top Hyrox athletes are objectively more runners than strength athletes by any metric. For example, top males can probably run a 15:30 5k and deadlift 400. They are way closer to the WR 5k then they are the WR deadlift. Same is true for amount of training required to run that fast at 180+lbs. Of course runners tend to downplay the amount of running in Hyrox.

Sorry to hear Andy's still lost his mojo for running 😢 - I remember he particularly loved the pacing TRC events e.g. pacing people to 10k PBs, so maybe he could turn up at a parkrun a week and pace as many people to a sub-20 as possible? Or even just see how many parkruns he can win himself in a certain period of time?
